9 Mandated Services The District Attorney s Office is mandated by law to: Review and prosecute criminal cases in both the adult and juvenile justice systems; Protect consumers, workers, and the environment, including enforcement through civil and criminal actions; Preserve and protect public integrity; Uphold the rights of victims of crime; and Support and protect victims of and witnesses to crime.

Note: Only the District Attorney has a legal mandate under Prop 47. The Public Defender has no required duties under this legislation.

O Malley for her work to end child sex trafficking in the Bay Area and beyond. D.A. 33 Rape Kit Backlog In November 2013, D.A. O Malley traveled to Washington, D.C. to inform policymakers about the problem of untested DNA rape kits and to preview what we had implemented here in Alameda County. O Malley met with members of Congress, Officials at the Department of Justice and White House Advisors. In 2014, the White House announced that that President Obama would include $41 million in his 2015 budget to help eliminate the backlog of untested rape kits. Information contained in the White House press release was taken verbatim from D.A. O Malley s presentation.
34 Rape Kit Backlog And in California The District Attorney s office sponsored legislation that would impose deadlines for the forensic testing of rape kits and for the entry of DNA profile information into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a national database. AB 1517, authored by Assemblymember Nancy Skinner, was passed by the California Legislature and signed into law by Governor Brown on September 30, 2014.
