19 - ; ~ U N I T E D ~ Sr'.\ T E S HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM fhe PRESIDENT HAS SEEN 5--J..,,..b/ Irving Greenberg, Chairman United States Holocaust Memorial Council April 24, 2001 PERSONAL President George W. Bush The White House 160d PennsylvaniaAvenue; 1-TW Washington, DC Dear Mr. President: I was so moved by your words and by your deeds that I am writing this personal letter as well. Thank you for your masterful tal.k atthe National Commemoration of the Days of Remembrance. You spoke the deepest truth about the Holocaust, onethat is not fully understoodlyet. Nazism was idolatry; all tyrants cannot abide the commandment to have no other gods before God. National Socialism sought to make a human being the source of good and evil Hitler was given complete and absolute authority. As you said, idolaters hate Jews because the Jewish tradition teaches that only God is God. The sad.truth is that since idolaters seek to make a human into god -- they create a god not of life but of death. The Nazis created a universe of total death in the Holocaust. That the President,of the United States spoke this truth at this solemn occasion will give it enormous cmrrency and resonance. Your vision of limited government and a government of laws not men is one of the most important lessons drawn by deeper reflection on the Holocaust. Your understan~ing and pledge that the United State~ will continue to protect the oppressed and work to prevent the repetition of the Holocaust for all humanity also proclaims a central lesson of the Hol caust. To NaZism which chose death; you offer ihe ahemativc of leading thca:meri03n people and the worlclto choose life. May God bless you and strengthen you. May the terrible :evidence and witness which you encountered in your visit at the Holocaust Museum, give you additional inner strength and determination to be,the protector of decency, tolerance, character and the rule of law: It was a privilege to walk through the exhibition with you, Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Welch and your friends. The reverence and dignity which you showed was another expression of the deep sensitivity and thoughtfulness which you have shown continuously with relation to the Holocaust. wannest best wishes.
