Our Reverse Trade Show, on Tuesday March 1, 2011, went great! Thanks to all the vendors, participants and volunteers that made this event so fun and so successful. We appreciate all the time and energy you devoted to making Come Steal the Show such a memorable event. Events and celebrations in April include; April Fool s Day 4/1, Springtime Tallahassee 4/2, Ponce De Leon Day 4/8, Jackie Robinson Day 4/11, TACNIGP General Meeting and Luncheon 4/12, Thomas Jefferson s birthday (4/13/1743) anniversary, Earth Day 4/22, Easter 4/24 and National Arbor Day 4/30. Income tax returns are due soon and the Florida Legislature has been in session for almost four weeks now. I hope that your tax returns were an easier job than the one the Legislature has to accomplish this session. Save the date October 11, Products Expo, Destination Success! 2 MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT The weather is changing, getting warmer and full of pollen wherever we go. Spring is here, time to plant flowers, go to the beach and enjoy. Our speaker this month is Derek Friend of the Tallahassee Police Department. Officer Derek Friend is a Florida State University Graduate, who has been a Tallahassee Police Officer for 13 years. Derek began working at TPD in 1997 and has served as a Patrol Officer, Financial Crimes Investigator, Criminal Intelligence Investigator, Internal Affairs Investigator, Staff Inspector, CFA Accreditation Manager, and as of Monday April 11 th, the Public Information Officer for the Department. Derek has provided community presentations regarding protection from financial crimes and gang education and awareness. He also serves the Department and other agencies as a Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation Assessor, by providing on-site accreditation assessments around the state. 4 FEBRUARY MONTHLY CHAPTER MEETING Date: March 1, 2011 Location: Tallahassee/Leon County Civic Center Number in Attendance: 91 (40 suppliers and 50 members) Call to Order: President Donna Smith called the meeting to order at 12:02 PM. Pledge: Mark Lovell, Dept. of Management Services Invocation: None Minutes: None New Members and Guests: No new members or guest were mentioned Job Opportunities: No announcements President: No report Treasurer: No report Introduction of Speaker: No speaker this month. This luncheon meeting was held immediately after the Reverse Trade Show Come Steal the Show and attended by dozens of suppliers and members and the time was spent networking. After lunch, two classes for business people were held. The first class conducted by Keith Roberts of Leon County coached the attendees on how to do business with governmental agencies and where to look for opportunities. The second class was hosted by the MyFloridaMarketPlace Team and included loads of tips and tricks for using the e-procurement system. Monthly Drawing: Mark Lovell held a 3 question trivia contest. The questions were about the Reverse Trade Show attendees - who came the farthest to attend, attendees business names (first and last alphabetically) and the tree winners will receive free lunch in April. 5 MARCH MINUTES BOARD MEETING TALLAHASSEE AREA CHAPTER OF NIGP, INC. Date: March 15, 2011 Location: Leon County Purchasing Bid Room, 2284 Miccosukee Road Members Present: Donna Smith, President; Robert Threewitts, Vice President; Susan Barr, Secretary; Wendi Sellers, Immediate Past President; Board Members: Brenda Wells, Charles Day, Ed Valla, Dave Callaway, and Bill Spencer; David Bennett, Trade Show Chair; Jessie Moseley, Newsletter Editor. Members Absent: Gloria Dixon, Mark Lovell, Treasurer. President Donna Smith called the meeting to order at 3:30 PM. Old Business: President Smith reported that the Reverse Trade Show (RTS) grossed $ , netted $13808, and overhead $ , a much lower overhead an risk compared to the Trade Show and RTS together. Everyone was please with the results for our first year RTS and looking forward to building on this each year in the future. Lessons learned from the feed back of the RTS included having seating in the refreshment area and the room needed to be cooler. Board Member Charlie Day recognized the hard work of many members, particularly Claudia Cooper, Gloria Dixon, and Wendi Sellers. Officer and Board member attendance requirements to add to the by-laws were discussed. National By-Laws state that if 3 consecutive meetings are missed without an excuse acceptable to the Board and Director is deemed as resigned. The By-Laws committee will continue present proposals to the membership to be voted on. New Business: David Bennett, DMS has volunteered to be the Trade Show Committee Chair. Charlie Day has suggested that sometimes our speaker topics are used as justification for members to attend or agencies to pay for meeting lunches and we should include them in our announcements to the membership. It was agreed that Charlie would include the speaker topics in the reminder notices for the Chapter Meeting. Brenda Wells suggested that we recognize Chuck Beall s retirement. Charlie Day will send an blast and Jessie Moseley will include it in the newsletter. Past President Sellers reminded the board that next month, to our regret, we need to call for nominations for two positions in the newsletter; a new Vice President and one board member. We will cancel the election for one or both positions if the members secure employment. Trade Show Report (Oct. 11 th ): Past President Sellers proposed a drop in booth price for an early bird registration and increase the price for and August registration and a September registration. There was a discussion for 4 or 6 sponsorships to cover the cost of overhead. Vice President Threewitts suggested designating a Chair for a publicity committee for the Trade Show. Trade Show Committee Chair, David Bennett is going to do an analysis and research our pricing and budget for the Trade Show. We can vote by . Suggestions: Better training for vendors and promote Florida and business in Florida and try to get the Governors involvement.
