1 Sports Business Club: University of Wisconsin-Madison Organization Constitution and By-Laws Mission Statement The mission of the Sports Business Club is to educate, train and connect its members to the sports industry through hands on experience, lectures and workshops. These goals are met through speaker events with industry professionals, training sessions in professional practices, volunteer opportunities within the community, and collaborative events managed by the club. The Sports Business Club stresses a diversity of events to address the variety of ambitions, passions, experiences and skill levels of its members. Active members encounter professional growth while developing their personal code of ethics, leadership skills, and preparedness for their chosen field. We, the members of the Sports Business Club, hereby establish this Constitution so that our goals and intentions will be realized to their full extent. Article I Organization Name The name of this organization will be the Sports Business Club, henceforth referred to as The Sports Business Club. Article II Objectives The Sports Business Club operates in order to provide an opportunity for individuals interested in working in the field of athletics to learn from, and network with, successful industry professionals. The Sports Business Club also provides opportunities for members to get hands-on experience in the field. These criteria are achieved through general assembly speaker

2 events, organization outings to various businesses and venues, volunteer opportunities, workshops and organization run events. The Sports Business Club is committed to fulfilling its responsibilities of abiding by University of Wisconsin Madison and Wisconsin School of Business policies. The Sports Business Club takes on the responsibility of being the best resource on campus for students with a passion in the Sports Business Industry to learn and make connections in the field. Article III Membership Section A: Eligibility 1) To be eligible for membership in the Sports Business Club, individuals must be currently enrolled students at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Students may be pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees, and there is no restriction based on field of study. Section B: Membership 1) To be considered as a member of the Sports Business Club, individuals must pay a dues fee, which will be set prior to each academic year. These must be paid before a member may attend any Sports Business Club function, unless event is specifically designated as open to the public: a) The Sports Business Club s fiscal year shall start July 1 and end June 30 b) The amount of annual fees will not exceed $75.00 c) The amount of annual dues will be established prior to each academic year as determined by the Executive Board d) Annual dues will be used to further the mission and goals of

3 the Sports Business Club and within University of Wisconsin Madison and Wisconsin School of Business guidelines. 2) Membership participation and involvement is at the discretion of the student and is not policed or supervised by members of the SBC executive board but is strongly encouraged in order to maximize the personal and professional learning opportunities that the club offers. 3) There are no academic requirements for membership. 4) Members will be recognized for their participation based on a rewards system. 5) The Club will keep a balance of at least 50% BBA, CIB, or prebusiness students to adhere to the BBA student organization requirements. Section C: Withdrawal 1) Members are free to withdraw from the organization at any time. Individuals that have withdrawn from the organization or have not paid their dues may not attend Sports Business Club functions. These individuals will not be considered members of the Sports Business Club. Refunds of annual dues are not given after 15 days, except in extenuating circumstances. Section D: Discrimination 1) The Sports Business Club follows the non-discrimination statement put forth by the UW System definition listed in regent policy 30-06: Student organizations that select their members or officers on the basis of commitment to a set of beliefs (e.g., religious or political beliefs) may limit membership, officer positions, or participation in the organization to students who

4 affirm that they support the organization s goals and agree with its beliefs, so long as no student is excluded from membership, officer positions, or participation on the basis of his or her race, color, creed other than commitment to the beliefs of the organization, religion, national origin, disability, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital status or parental status, or, unless exempt under Title IX, sex. Article IV Officers Section A: Officers: The Sports Business Club has an Executive Board consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Director of Marketing, Treasurer, Director of Events, and Director of Development and Alumni Relations. In addition, the club has a Blog Administrator and a BBA Senator. Section B: Membership: All positions on the Executive Board must be active members of the Sports Business Club. All members must be students at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Section C: Terms: All positions on the Executive Board serve approximately one year terms. Incoming members begin their service in May of the ending academic year. Outgoing members are relieved of their duties as of June 30 following the academic year (also the end of the Sports Business Club s fiscal year). Expectations are that outgoing board members provide guidance and support as needed during transition. Section D: Elections 1) Executive Board elections will take place annually in April of each fiscal year. Members interested in serving on the Executive Board must fill out an application form as provided via the Sports Business Club s . In addition to the application, interested parties must submit a resume and personal statement.

5 2) Outgoing board members review applications and appoint new positions based on the majority vote, with the President abstaining in the event of a tie. 3) Members of the previous year s Executive Board will fill the positions of the President and Vice President. Should no outgoing board members desire to fill these positions the positions will be open to general members with outstanding applications and attendance records. Section E: Any Executive Board member, with the exception of the President, may be removed by a majority vote within the Executive Board. The member in question must be present for the vote and is allowed to vote. The President will abstain in the event of a tie. Should the Executive Board wish to impeach the current president, the advisor of the Sports Business Club must be included in the discussion and voting procedures. The Wisconsin School of Business and University of Wisconsin Madison must be notified if a change of President occurs. *The University of Wisconsin Madison and/or the Wisconsin School of Business may remove executive Board members immediately should they participate in conduct deemed unacceptable. Article V Officer Duties Part 1: Executive Board: These officers are to attend all board meetings in addition to the additional duties listed below. All club decisions are to be made by these officers and all decisions must be student made. Section A: President 1) The president presides over all meetings and has the final decision on club projects, initiatives, funds, speakers, etc. The President supervises and signs off on club transactions including membership dues, speaker payments//gifts, event budgets, etc.

6 The President communicates, organizes, and establishes order within the Sports Business Club and assists whenever necessary. Section B: Vice President 1) The Vice President assists the President in all club matters including coordinating speakers as well as planning club trips. The Vice President will also preside over meetings in the event that the President is unable to attend. Section C: Secretary 1) The Secretary maintains all membership accounts. The secretary will be responsible for check in sheets, keeping membership records and organizing committee records. The secretary will send out executive board meeting notes to Executive Board members as well as weekly club s. Section D: Marketing Director 1) The Marketing Director maintains internship and job inventories including positions currently available and descriptions of internships and jobs held by current and former members of the Sports Business Club. The Marketing Director will manage all social media accounts including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. Additionally, they will create all promotional materials for club events. Section E: Treasurer 1) The Treasurer supervises and manages club funds including membership dues, speaker payments/gifts, event budgets, etc. The Treasurer also assists the President with budget maintenance, monetary transactions, and grant applications. Section F: Director of Events 1) The Director of Events manages the image of the Sports

7 Business Club on campus and within the community through interactions with media, other student orgs, campus entities, etc. This includes volunteer opportunities and fundraisers for the club. In addition, the Director of Events will be responsible for planning and executing events that build camaraderie within the Sports Business Club. They will organize social outings for club members including scheduling, location, food, drink, etc. Section G: Director of Development and Alumni Relations 1) The Director of Development and Alumni Relations manages the club s efforts to connect with alumni and plan the annual Alumni Day event in the spring. The Director of Development and Alumni Relations will also coordinate fundraising efforts and manage SBC alumni related social media accounts on Twitter and LinkedIn. Part 2: Other Leadership Positions: Section A: Blog Administrator: The Blog Administrator, under the supervision of the executive board members, is in charge of updating the club Blog. This includes speaker summaries, calendar updates, updating the job board, and maintain a positive image for the club online. The Blog Administrator will also be asked to attend some executive board meetings to give updates, and assist with other club functions as needed. Section B: Senator: The Senator will be the club s representative to BBA Senate meetings. It is preferred that the senator is serving in an officer role as well, but if needed the Senator may be a general member. Article VI Meetings 1) Regular Executive Board meetings are held at a minimum of once every four weeks, with the exceptions taken into consideration for school recesses. During the semester the board

8 should meet weekly in addition to club events for general members. 2) General assembly meetings typically consist of an industry professional giving a minute talk, followed by question and answer sessions. Club business will be addressed at the beginning of the meeting, with Executive Board members being available to answer questions or assist members until the last person has left the room. General assembly meetings are scheduled once a month or approximately 3 5 weeks apart. 3) The Club strives to take a large overnight trip during winter break each year. This purpose of the trip is to create a hands-on experience for members not available in Madison. A large amount of the annual budget should be allocated to this trip. It is the responsibility of every officer to line of speakers, tours, and social activities to enhance the mission of the club. Every effort should be made to include every dedicated member who wishes to attend. 4) Up to two additional field trips are scheduled annually with the Fall Semester trip being taken to various locations on a rotating basis. During the Spring Semester, a large social outing is taken to a sporting event, with any potential speakers being lined up if possible. 5) Additional gatherings include smaller workshops, professional development sessions, organization outings, and social events, and are held as necessary or as available. 6) The board retains the authority to schedule additional types of club events as necessary as long as they align with the club s mission Article VII- Money Handling Procedures

9 The club should always maintain a bank account that can be accessed by the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Advisor. The President, Vice President, and Treasurer should all review the club s financials monthly, and all three must approve major expenditures. The treasurer should present the monthly budget at the beginning and end of every month at a board meeting to ensure money is being spent to enhance the club s mission. If the club should ever dissolve for any reason, the remaining money in the bank account is to be donated to the Badgers Give Back department of the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department. If that is not possible for any reason, the money should be donated to an appropriate sports related charity. Article VIII Amendments Amendments to this living document may be introduced by any member of the organization, but must be proposed by an Executive Board member in an Executive Board meeting only. Majority vote by the board is required to enact the amendment, and if passed, the amendment will be added to the constitution.
