1 SHALER AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT Voting Meeting April 20, 2016 Middle School auditorium Minutes The Board of School Directors of the Shaler Area School District held a Voting Meeting on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at the Shaler Area Middle School auditorium, Glenshaw, PA, with Dr. April Kwiatkowski, School Board President, presiding. Dr. Kwiatkowski called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. and turned the floor over to Mr. Aiken and Dr. O Black.! Mr. Aiken and Dr. O Black recognized Shaler Area students for their accomplishments: o Three Shaler Area High School students placed in the Advanced Plus level, the most advanced category, of the 2016 High School Japanese Speech Contest hosted by the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh s Asian Studies Center: Nick Harn, 1 st place (grand prize winners); Zach Hughes, 2 nd place; and Nick DeBortoli, 3 rd place. o Two Shaler Area High School AP Chemistry students were recognized by the Society for Analytical Chemist of Pittsburgh in the annual High School Essay Contest. The students will be recognized during the SACP Awards Dinner at Duquesne University in May: Nevin White, 1 st place; Jessica Wetzel, honorable mention. o The following Shaler Area swimmers broke two school swimming records during the AAA WPIAL Swim Championships: " Abby Banze broke the 100 breaststroke record previously set in the season by swimming a 1: " Dillon Brown broke the 100 backstroke record previously set over 35 years ago during the season by swimming a Dillon also qualified for the 2016 PIAA Swimming Championships on March at Bucknell University.! Dr. Kwiatkowski recognized the Public to Speak on Agenda Items. There were none.! Dr. Kwiatkowski called the meeting to order and asked the Board and audience to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

On a motion by Mr. Romac and a second by Mr. Gapsky, the following Minutes were approved by all in attendance: Committee of the Whole March 9, 2016 Voting Meeting March 16, 2016 Special Voting Meeting March 23, 2016! Dr. Kwiatkowski then announced items tabled or removed from the agenda: There were none.! On a motion by Mr. Romac and a second by Mrs. Petrovich, the agenda was approved by all Board members in attendance. After no further discussion, this item was then approved by a roll call vote. Dr. Kwiatkowski asked how many participants would be in the Summer STEAM Camp and if all workshops had been secured. Dr. O Black said the district would keep the number of participants to about 100 and several of Shaler Area s teachers were presenting workshops this year instead of going to outside organizations. Beattie Committee, Babcock Blvd. Wednesday, May 4, 2016 o 6:00 p.m. Buildings & Grounds Committee The announcement of past executive sessions was made by Dr. Kwiatkowski: April 13, 2016 April 20, 2016 Dr. Kwiatkowksi then asked if there was any other business to come before the board. Mr. Fisher said all of the cost-savings from the A.W. Beattie school revenue bonds will be passed on the school districts. The board also looked at bond refinancing and naming the learning center after a Beattie principal who had passed away. Mr. Tunstall said he was glad Beattie was able to accomplish the refinancing because it means money back to the district. Dr. Kwiatkowski also announced the Steelers vs. Staff basketball game would be on April 22 and proceeds would benefit the school PTOs. After no further items were presented, on a motion by Mr. Gapsky and second by Mrs. Petrovich, the Business Meeting was adjourned at 7:29 p.m. Page 7 of 8

8 Dr. Kwiatkowski then recognized the public to speak on any non-agenda item: Laura Aguera, of Scott Avenue, requested an update on the proposed furloughs. Mr. Aiken said that as was stated at the meeting last week, the district is looking at every option including a retirement incentive and part-time employment. The goal from the beginning is to get zero furloughs, but it s too early to say because the retirement incentive is due May 9. Jim McDermott, a high school teacher, asked for an update on PlanCon money. Mr. Aiken said the district has received conflicting information from the state on that important piece of information. As of now, the district is hopeful something will happen. Laura Aguera said as a parent and taxpayer, she doesn t want furloughs and asked what she can do to help. Mr. Aiken said coming out to support and staying involved in PTOs or the District Parent Council are all great opportunities. Mr. Aiken stressed the need to have a strong community of all stakeholders and everyone working together. Dr. Kwiatkowski added that it s important to keep yourself informed and to write legislators and encourage educational funding. Ingrid Kalchthaler, of Clare Street, said she is proud to be a Titan and have educators and administrators and school board members. She asked when the district would know. Mr. Aiken said the district is getting good news on a daily basis. By the May 18 legislative meeting the district should have a final answer. He pointed out that there are also resignations over the summer, which will provide some movement. Mr. Aiken thanked everyone in attendance for coming to support the school district, teachers and students and for the questions and interest in a very important topic.
