Hosted by my staff on Saturday, September 29, 2018, the "U.S. Service Academy Information Forum" is for interested parents, educators, and prospective academy students who reside in the Third Congressional District. This event is a valuable opportunity to learn more about the selection process and application requirements to attend an academy. Nomination and evaluation procedures will be explained, and representatives with the Military, Naval, Air Force and Merchant Marine academies will be present. Afterwards, we will have break-out sessions for students and parents to meet with academy representatives and learn more about life at the various academies. Full details are below. Additionally, please be aware that all students who apply to a U.S. Service Academy must be nominated by an authorized person. Because this is my last term in the United States Congress, 2018 will be my final opportunity to nominate well-deserving students. Enclosed you will find a copy of my 2018 nomination application, which students can also obtain by contacting my Plano office. Please note that completed applications must be received by my office no later than Fridav. November 2, Also enclosed is a poster advertising the Information Forum. I ask you to consider displaying it so that the greatest number of students and families can be reached. Finally, I ask that you share this letter with other school counselors, principals, educators, coaches, and community leaders who may know students who would appreciate the opportunity to attend a u.s. 3 CONGRESSMAN SAM JOHNSON Texas' Third Congressional District U.S. SERVICE ACADEMY INFORMATION The Nomination Process There are five U.S. Service Academies which include: The United States Air Force (USAF A), Naval (USNA), Military (USMA), Merchant Marine (USMMA), and Coast Guard (USCGA) Academies. Nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. There ~re various nomination authorities, with each eligible young person being able to apply to both United States Senators from the applicant's state, his or her United States Representative, and the Vice President (if very highly qualified). The other nomination categories are militaryaffiliated. With respect to the Congressional category, each Representative and each Senator is allowed to have at each of the academies five persons charged to his or her quota at anyone time. To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must meet the eligibility requirements established by law and be nominated from an authorized person including a Member of the United States Senate or the House of Representatives. Congressman Johnson may nominate applicants who are legally domiciled within the boundaries of the Third District of Texas. Who is Eligible? An applicant for a nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to a service academy. He or she must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed their 23rd birthday, must be a United States citizen, and must be unman-ied, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents. Applving to U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson for a Nomination Ideally, students interested in a congressional nomination should contact Congressman Johnson's district office in the spring of their junior year in high school. They can obtain details on the nomination process and have a nomination application packet mailed to them. In order to be considered for a nomination, the completed application and the other required documentation listed below must be returned in their entirety to Congressman Johnson's District office no later than Fridav, November 2, Also, please note that it is extremely important that the studellt directly begin the application process with the academies. 1

4 o OFFICIAL SAT/ACT SCORES sent direct I v from the college boards. Test scores must arrive no later than November 2, Please carefully review the dates you take these tests to ensure they will arrive from the testing organizations at the district office by the November 2 nd deadline. Photo copies or printed online copies of your test scores are not acceptable. Scores listed on the back of your certified high school transcript are considered official. o RECOMMENDATIONS are accepted using the Congressman's recommendation fonn. Your recommendation forms should be submitted with your application in a signed, sealed envelope from each recommender. We will accept up to two recommendations. Do not send more. Letters of recommendation absent the required fonn will not be considered. Applicants should be aware that recommendation forms can be a cause for delay in completing an application. Plan ahead and begin the process early. o TOUCH BASE WITH AN ACADEMY REPRESENT A TIVE from the academy of your first preference. You do not need to submit anything with your application. It is your responsibility to find out from each academy who your assigned academy representative is and for YOll to reach out to them. Some academies require applicants to be interviewed by a local academy representative. Again, check with at least your first and second preference academy about this topic. Congressman Sam lohnson's Academy Selection Board and the academies consider your highest math and verbal scores from all tests taken; therefore, these tests should be taken as often as possible. Check with your school counselor for the testing dates. Each organization wil.! send your scores to the Congressman' s office if you llse the following codes when registering/taking the test: SAT: 6061 ACT: 7684 Please note we ollly accept scores sent to the office by the testing organizations or those listed on certified high school transcripts. The Congressman's Academy Selection Board only reviews completed applications. They weigh each decision very carefully and take many factors into consideration when selecting the talented young men and women who represent the great State of Texas. There are three methods of nominating, and Congressman 10hnson uses the competitive method. For each vacancy, ten nominations are made on a strictly competitive basis. The competitive method provides that the nominees compete among themselves for final appointments as determined by the academies' admissions authorities. 3
