3 INTRODUCTION The Foundation 30th ECNP Congress was established on 12 June The objective of the Foundation is to obtain funds for the benefit of the ECNP Research and Scholarship Foundation (ECNP R&S), whose goal is to promote and maximise research in the field of neuropsychopharmacology. ECNP R&S is a Dutch public interest serving entity. The Foundation achieves its objective by organising the international congress named "30th ECNP Congress", which was held on 2-5 September 2017 in Paris, France. The Foundation does not aim to make a profit. A net operating surplus, if any at all, will be transferred to ECNP R&S. Any shortfall will be covered by ECNP R&S. The members of the board do not receive remuneration for their role. This report will give you an outline of the activities related to the organisation of the congress. 5 AIM AND CONGRESS ACTIVITIES The aim of the ECNP Congress was to bring together people from disciplines across the spectrum of applied and translational neuroscience to network, exchange ideas and to advance the science of the brain, promote better treatment and enhance brain health. To fulfil this aim, a variety special activities and sessions were organised. Keynote Session (KS) and Keynote Lecture (KL) The keynote session was held on Saturday 2 September and started with a presentation by the president of ECNP. The Keynote Lecture featured a worldrenowned speaker who is especially invited to present on a topic of interest that should appeal to all congress participants. The Keynote Lecture was given by John H. Krystal on Targeting glutamate in psychiatric disease. The Keynote Session was followed by the Welcome Reception, where drinks and snacks were served. Plenary lectures (PL) The plenary lectures were presented by well-known scientists. Six plenary lectures were scheduled, one of which was given by the ECNP Neuropsychopharmacology Award winner. The following plenary lectures were given: Endophenotypes in schizophrenia Robert Freedman, USA Multimodal neuroimaging in brain disease Gaël Chételat, France Brain Prize Award lecture Synaptic plasticity in health and disease Graham Collingridge, UK/Canada From genes to clinical phenotype in ADHD across the lifespan Barbara Franke, The Netherlands Cognitive and functional remediation in affective disorders Annabel Martinez-Aran, Spain ECNP Neuropsychopharmacology Award lecture A journey into serotonin: 40 years of discoveries and surprises Michel Hamon, France 5

6 Symposia (S) The scientific symposia were divided into five tracks: Clinical Treatment track: the latest in therapies and clinical applications For: Clinicians and clinical researchers Clinical Research track: cutting-edge discoveries in clinical neuroscience For: Clinicians, clinical researchers and translational neuroscientists Translational Research track: the latest translational and cross-disciplinary research For: Clinical researchers, basic and translational neuroscientists Preclinical Research track: Break-through research in basic neuroscience For: Basic and translational neuroscientists In each of the above symposia four speakers presented on a specific topic. Educational track: Up-to-date insights and practice-oriented education For: Active clinicians These sessions focus on a continuous dialogue between the participants and the presenters. Different angles of a subject are discussed and state-of-the-art summaries are provided, with emphasis on new information relevant for clinical practice. A key pad system is used to make the sessions more interactive. Each session had two speakers and one moderator, leaving enough time for discussion. There were six sessions in parallel. New findings symposia Two fixed symposia, one scheduled in the preclinical track and one in the interface track, was dedicated to research by junior scientists. Eight speakers per symposium were selected from the poster presenters at the ECNP Workshop for Junior Scientists in Europe, which is held every year in March in Nice, France. TNM symposia These three symposia were based on the Targeted Network Meetings (TNMs), held on 2 September 2016 in Vienna, Austria. Regulatory spotlight session This session was a special regulatory dialogue session with the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The session was designed for open and active engagement amongst EMA stakeholders. The session provided an excellent platform for scientific and regulatory exchange. Nomenclature session (NS) This session was specially dedicated to the classification of psychotropic drugs by means of the Neuroscience-based Nomenclature. The topic was Why and how psuchotropic nomenclature was changed: presenting the NbN app- focus on the paediatric. 6

7 Patient session (ES) This special session dedicated to addressing patient issues and topics relevant to patient care and families. This year the session focused on terrorism and the appropriate care after terrorist attacks. Brainstorming sessions (BS) These were small focused sessions organised by ECNP members on a topic of their choice. The organiser of the session and a second expert in that specific field of interest initiated the discussion. Career development sessions (CD) These lunchtime training sessions each featured an engaging expert in the field. The expert was specifically invited to share their wealth of knowledge and experience. The topics were especially interesting for junior scientists, but sessions were open to all participants. Top paper sessions (TP) During six 30-minute top paper sessions speakers discussed four papers published in the past 12 months, which they considered clinically most important and cutting-edge in their discipline. These sessions were a great way to get up-to-speed with the latest developments in six different disciplines. Rapid-fire poster sessions (RF) These sessions gave 18 of the highest scoring poster presenters the chance to present their data in a five-minute e-poster session. Rapid-fire poster presenters were selected based on the quality of their abstract, and received this extra benefit in addition to their participation in the usual poster sessions with a poster board. Poster sessions (P) Poster sessions were held Sunday until Tuesday at and lunch was available. The posters were grouped in eight topics. Poster presenters were present at their poster for further explanation and discussion, and to answer any question. The topics were: 1 Basic & clinical neuroscience 2 Mood disorders and treatment 3 Psychotic disorders and treatment Anxiety disorders, OCD, stress related disorders and treatment 4 5 Dementia and neurological disorders 6 Addiction 7 Child and adolescent disorders and treatment 8 Other topics Exhibition An exhibition was organised on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. 7

8 Satellite symposia ECNP invited companies to organise scientifically oriented satellite symposia with a wellbalanced programme. The satellite symposia were scheduled outside the ECNP scientific programme, which gave congress participants the opportunity to attend. Satellite symposia took place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Expert Science Exchange An opportunity for companies to move from commercially oriented exposure to more focused, scientifically driven engagement with participants. The sessions were set up to provide industry the opportunity to interact with a small group of participants on a specific topic. The programme took place in parallel with the official ECNP scientific programme and was published as an industry activity together with the satellite symposia programmes and the exhibition. 8

9 TIMELINE 2015 The foundation received the approval of the Dutch tax authorities to become a public interest serving Dutch entity (ANBI). The ECNP Office based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is charged with the organisation of the congress. Registration with the tax authorities in the Netherlands has been completed. In September 2015 a call for symposia proposals was sent out. A bank account has been opened in the name of the 30 th ECNP Congress. A deposit amount has been transferred from ECNP R&S to the 30 th ECNP Congress as income for the Foundation from registration fees and support will not start until end of A site visit has taken place in December to start negotiations with the venue and other suppliers The annual accounts of 2015 have been prepared and finalised. The budget of the 30 th ECNP Congress has been set up and finalised and signed by the treasurer and secretary of the Foundation and registration fees have been set. The deadline for symposium proposals was 1 March and in April the first meeting of the Scientific Programme Committee (SPC) was held to review the applications of symposia and to make the first draft of the scientific programme. In June the second meeting of the SPC took place and the scientific programme has been finalised and reviewed by the members of the Scientific Advisory Panels (SAPs). In September invitations to speakers have been sent out. Mid July the Industry Guidelines, with the request for support in the form of the organisation of industry sessions and exhibition space have been sent out with deadline of application of 15 December In September 2016 registration opened and it was possible for scientists to submit an abstract for poster presentations. 9

10 2017 The annual accounts of 2016 were prepared and finalised. In March the chairs of the sessions were invited. In March the programmes of the supported satellite symposia and expert science exchange has been approved and allocated to time slots. CME accreditation was requested for the scientific programme. Logistics has been settled regarding catering, meeting space, AV, IT, exhibition, signage and set-up of the venue. Committee meetings of ECNP were scheduled and committee members invited. Promotion for the congress has been arranged at related congresses and every month the ECNP e-news contained information about the congress. Special e-leaflets have been produced and ed to the ECNP database. On 15 March the application for Brainstorming Sessions was closed. On 1 April the submission of abstracts for poster presentations was closed and review was undertaken by the members of the Scientific Advisory Panels. Final decision was made by the field editor of ENP and the chair of the Scientific Programme Committee before 1 July For the best abstracts of junior scientists from Europe travel grants have been rewarded. During the congress the 10 most excellent posters have been rewarded with the ECNP Poster Award. Abstract submitters from European countries with a developing economy could apply for a CDE grant to cover costs of their stay during the congress if their abstract was accepted for poster presentation. Site visits were planned. The congress was held from 2-5 September 2017 in Paris, France at the Palais des Congrés de Paris. In November the financial and registration administration and procedures with suppliers has been finalised. 10

11 2018 The annual accounts of 2017 will be prepared and finalised. In 2018 finances will be settled and VAT issues finalised. The final account of 30 th ECNP Congress should be finished in first quarter and an audit report will be requested. Before 30 June, any net operation surplus is to be transferred to ECNP R&S. It is foreseen that by the end of the year the Foundation will be liquidated and deregistered at the chamber of commerce. 11

12 FINANCE Board The members of the board do not receive remuneration for their role. Secretarial Assistance The chair of the Scientific Programme Committee received 6,000 for secretarial assistance. Reimbursement small expenses The other members of the Scientific Programme Committee were entitled to request the amount of 2,000 for the duration of their term on the Scientific Programme Committee. This amount should cover their expenses for ground transportation, lunch, dinner, drinks, etc. Strategy The strategy for the coming years can be found in the ECNP R&S report which is also published on 12
