Each December I pour over the budget for the coming year trying to figure out how we can provide the best service to our chapters and members in the most efficient manner. One expense I never complain about is awards. Every One and Three Star Chapter award that we have in the budget indicates a healthy chapter that is furthering the Three Objects and turning in their paperwork to prove it. Here are three things you can do to help your chapter earn a three star chapter award. Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar - Every chapter has a few brothers who really set the world on fire academically. Nominate one of them for the Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar Award. The winner gets$1,000 in addition to a scroll, scholarship key, and a paid trip to conclave. If you don t nominate them, they cannot win. Winning would be great but the simple act of nominating a brother sends them a positive and powerful message They and their contributions are valued. You cannot buy feelings like that. See page two for the program guidelines. Chemistry Outreach Last month, we talked about the Bonding with Color outreach program. In this issue of the Chrome and Blue we have included a shopping list of all of the things your chapter needs to put together a kit that your chapter can always have on-hand to teach chemical bonding through the use of tie-dying. It can also be used as a chapter fundraiser. Initiation Paperwork Get it in on time. It is sad how a chapter can do all the things it needs to win an award and then fail to get it because no one sent the paperwork to the National Office. We need this paperwork to properly record new members and to prove to the IRS our tax-exempt status as a 501(c)3 organization. I am going to budget for your chapter to get a Three Star Chapter award. Please make us use all of that money. The National Office will close at noon on Wednesday, November 26th and will reopen Monday, December 1st.

2 Star Chapter Reminder -Nominate a Scholar Give one of your members a chance to win $1,000 and satisfy one of the criteria for the Three Star Chapter Award. Nominate a member for the Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar this month so they will have time to prepare their application by the January 15 th deadline. Every chapter should nominate a member. Below is Supreme Council Proposition 3703 explaining the award and its requirements. ALPHA CHI SIGMA SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Purpose: To encourage and recognize outstanding scholarship among collegiate members of Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity. Nature: The Award consists of a suitably inscribed scroll, a gold scholarship key, and a monetary prize of $1,000. A biographical sketch of the recipient(s) will be published in the annual awards issue of THE HEXAGON of Alpha Chi Sigma. Establishment and Support: The Award was established in 1978 by resolution of the Supreme Council of Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity. The costs of administering the Award are borne by Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity. The monetary award is provided by the Alpha Chi Sigma Educational Foundation. Rules of Eligibility: A nominee for Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar must have been a member of Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity for one year, and be enrolled in an institution of higher learning at the time of nomination. Undergraduate nominees must have completed the Junior year at the time of nomination. Graduate nominees may be nominated based upon both their undergraduate and graduate records upon the completion of their first year of graduate study. Graduate students may also be nominated, based upon their graduate records alone, after admission to candidacy for the terminal degree in the field of graduate study. Administration Chairman of the Award Committee: The Grand Master of Ceremonies shall appoint a member of Alpha Chi Sigma to serve as Chairman of the Award Committee. The term of appointment is five years. The Chairman shall coordinate the activities of the Award Committee. Members of the Award Committee: The Grand Master of Ceremonies shall appoint four members of the Award Committee. The members shall be selected for terms of one, two, three, and four years. After the initial appointments, members of the Committee shall be appointed to terms of five years. Vacancies on the Committee shall be filled by appointment for the remaining portion of the term, so as to maintain the five-year rotation of members. Procedure for Nomination: In October of each academic year the Grand Recorder shall solicit nominations from each Collegiate Chapter. Announcements shall also be made in the Fall HEXAGON. Any member of Alpha Chi Sigma may submit a nomination. The Awards Committee shall set a target date for receipt of nomination materials in the office of the Grand Recorder. The Awards Committee shall establish criteria and procedures for selecting the Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar. Nomination Checklist: Biographical sketch Two letters of recommendation by faculty of the institution at which the student is enrolled Transcripts of all academic work Supporting information that the nominee may wish to supply, e.g., abstracts of presentations at meetings, or reprints or preprints of scientific publications. 3 Bonding with Color at the North Central Regional Conclave At the North Central Regional Conclave on October 18, chapters learned how do tie dye and put on a outreach program demonstrating covalent bonding through the chemistry of dyes. Each chapter in the district took home a Bonding With Color Kit (shown at the right) giving them all of the chemicals and dyes needed to dye 100 t-shirts. Each chapter has been challenged to use this kit as an outreach program in the coming year. If your chapter wants to incorporate this program into its efforts, extensive information on how to plan and carry out the program can be found on the National Web Site. This issue of the Chrome and Blue gives a shopping list of materials needed to put together your own kit. It is a good day to dye.

6 The Supreme Council will be meeting at the National Office in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 16-17, All members are welcome to attend. Please forward any agenda items to GMA Stipp at by December 19, to the University at Buffalo Colony of Beta Sigma Chapter! This past month, the Supreme Council passed proposition number 4209 recognizing the members of Alpha Chi Sigma as the Buffalo Colony of the Beta Sigma Chapter. The dedication and efforts of the Brothers at the University at Buffalo and at Beta Sigma Chapter have made this possible. Congratulations for all of your efforts, and we look forward to watching the University at Buffalo Colony progress toward Chapter status. Professional Representative Elections! Don t miss your chance to elect the next group of Professional Representatives! In order to allow professional members to continue to have a presence in the Grand Chapter whether they are near a professional chapter or not, the 1986 Conclave created the position of Professional Representative. This group is elected by active professional members for staggered, two-year terms, during the annual solicitation for Grand Chapter contributions. The duties of the Professional Representatives include advising the fraternity on both short and long-term goals and plans and serving on standing Grand Chapter committees. The number of Professional Representatives for the biennium is set at 20 percent of the number of active collegiate chapters at the time of the last Conclave. By now, all professional members should have received their solicitation and PR ballot in the mail. In order to have the privilege of voting, you must become an active professional by making a contribution to the fraternity. Please contact the National Office if you are a professional member and have not received it yet. The election will determine which five brothers will fill the class of PRs. The deadline for voting for Professional Representatives is November 30, Chapter Reminders 1. Submit Chapter Officer Election forms ASAP after elections. Always include addresses for all officers; this assures information is updated in our database and is sent to the correct member. 2. Turn in your chapter s initiation report as soon as possible following initiation so the recordings of your new members can be completed and certificates/member cards sent to them. 3. Complete a chapter audit upon appointing a new treasurer. The audit form can be found under Collegiates Forms & Documents on the website. 4. If you have any questions or are unsure regarding what needs to be reported to the National Office or when, please do not hesitate to call Kathy at (800) ALCHEMY! 5. Please remember that 501(c)3 organizations such as your chapter cannot use chapter funds for social events. The chapter should have a separate social account managed by someone other than your Chapter Treasurer.
