6 Objective From Exclusive to Inclusive Universality Is there really such a thing as humanity? Has there ever been an age of humanity? Since the Renaissance, humans have conceived of themselves as the masters of the world, but the age of humanity has not been realized. Freedom and equality, values held to be modern and universal, seem to be too often supplanted by an exclusive universality, which is used to dominate others. Conflict and anxiety abound in every part of the world, and their mechanisms are intrinsic to modern life. Indeed, modernity appears to cast a wide and deep shadow, and it is because of this that a new form of universality capable of embracing diversity is now needed more than ever. The Global Academy for Neo-Renaissance of Kyung Hee University will hold the 2006 Peace Bar Festival in celebration of the 25 th UN International Day of Peace. Under the main theme of Reinventing Universality for the 21 st Century: Beyond Freedom and Equality, the Festival will provide an open forum to explore a new age of humanity for peace and co-prosperity in pursuit of inclusive universality - a global common society that is spiritually Beautiful, materially Affluent, and humanly Rewarding (BAR). A new humanity and a new Renaissance await. A new age of humanity working toward a new future lies ahead Peace BAR Festival 2>3

12 PROGRAM 1. International Conference in Celebration of the 25 th Anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace Theme Reinventing Universality for the 21 st Century: Beyond Freedom and Equality Objective During the Renaissance, when man conceived of himself as the master of the world, humankind began its continuing pursuit of humanistic ideals. Modern society has since directed itself toward the achievement of the universal values of freedom and equality. It has also witnessed the destructive power of the World Wars and the horrors of the Holocaust in the 20 th century. In the post-cold War era, a new left and a new right have emerged, both of which claim to seek a new and better future. However, waves of modernization and globalization have swept away the imagination of both non-western and Western nations, creating gaps and clashes among differing nations and societies. We stand at the head of a new century during which we must forge a future free of fixed and conflicting values. Therefore, our challenging task is to bring about a better and more prosperous civilization for the future by means of reconciling the divisive tendencies of humankind with the values of freedom and equality. Throughout this international conference celebrating the 25 th UN International Day of Peace, Reinventing Universality for the 21 st Century: Beyond Freedom and Equality, we plan to search for new common meanings and values which will promote global trust. With this we hope to engender peace and co-prosperity in the 21 st century. Date October 27-28, 2006 Venue Organizer Sponsor Kyung Hee University / Lotte Hotel (Sogong-dong, Seoul) Global Academy for Neo-Renaissance JoongAngilbo 2006 Peace BAR Festival 8>9

13 1. International Conference in Celebration of the 25 th Anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace Conference Program Opening Ceremony Opening Speech: Inwon Choue (Rector, Global Academy for Neo-Renaissance) 10:00-10:30, Friday October 27, 2006 / Lotte Hotel Crystal Ballroom (Sogong-dong) Plenary Session I Reinventing Humanity 10:40-12:10, Friday October 27, 2006 / Lotte Hotel Crystal Ballroom (Sogong-dong) Since the Renaissance, modern society has given a more prominent status to humanity than to God. Humankind has subjugated nature to the human world through hard reason and resolute practices. However, the dignity and integrity of humanity will be strengthened by the sharing of tender feelings with and for others who are also standing in awe before the mysteries of the universe. Only by working together will humanity open up the possibilities for neo-renaissance in the 21 st century. Moderator Presenter Discussants Yersu Kim (Dean, Graduate School of NGO Studies, Kyung Hee University) Walter Reese-Schaefer (Professor, University of Goettingen, Germany) Hwa Yol Jung (Professor, Moravian College, USA) Hwa-Yong Lee (Kyung Hee University) Yeonkyo Jung (Kyung Hee University) UNESCO PRIZE FOR PEACE EDUCATION (1993)

14 1. International Conference in Celebration of the 25 th Anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace Plenary Session II Beyond Freedom and Equality 13:30-15:00, Friday October 27, 2006 / Lotte Hotel Crystal Ballroom (Sogong-dong) Modern society has made progress in social development and economic growth by exercising freedom and equality. However, our concept of freedom has fallen short of overcoming self-centeredness, and our application of equality has bordered on uniformity. As such, rather than liberating us, these values impose a heavy burden on humanity. We can open a new and better future by overcoming the limits faced by freedom and equality in the past. In this session, we will search for an alternative plan for a future that includes the gains of the welfare state and does not abandon the virtues of liberalism. Moderator Presenter Discussants Hongwoo Kim (Professor, Seoul National University) John Dunn (Professor, University of Cambridge, UK) Renate Bloem (President, CONGO, Switzerland) Yonghak Kim (Professor, Yonsei University) Hyuk-Sang Sohn (Professor, Kyung Hee University) 2006 Peace BAR Festival 10 >11

15 1. International Conference in Celebration of the 25 th Anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace Plenary Session III Renaissance Revisited - A New Aesthetics of Universality 15:30-17:00, Friday October 27, 2006 / Lotte Hotel Crystal Ballroom (Sogong-dong) In the last few centuries, the humanistic values that have shaped modern civilization have also given rise to numerous negative and boomerang effects by allowing humanity to misuse the natural world for its own benefits. The 21 st century developments in artificial intelligence and biotechnology demand a radical new perspective concerning the relationship between humans and their artifacts on the one hand, and between humans and nature on the other. In this session, we wish to probe the possibilities of a new paradigm to develop the aesthetics of a new civilization in the age of multiculturalism. Moderator Presenter Discussants Hwa Yol Jung (Professor, Moravian College, USA) Longxi Zhang (Professor, City University of Hong Kong, China) Walter Reese-Schaefer (Professor, University of Gottingen, Germany) Dongsoo Lee (Professor, Kyung Hee University) Jungkeun Lim (Professor, Kyung Hee Cyber University)

International Conference in Celebration of the 25 th Anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace Special Session I (Roundtable) Global Governance in the Post-Cold War Era 09:30-11:00, Saturday October 28, 2006 / Conference Room, University Main Building, KHU State-led economic growth and political development in the modern age have provided humanity with a freedom and equality it had not previously enjoyed. However, the polarizing effects of the Cold War created dangerous tensions throughout the world in the 20 th century. Now in the post-cold War era, the prospect of a new world order is within our reach. In this roundtable, participants will examine problems of reconciling the rules and systems of the previous era with expectations of change. Participants will also discuss the possibilities of establishing a new regime of global governance in the 21 st century. Moderator Keynote Speaker Discussion Leaders John G. Ikenberry (Professor, Princeton University, USA) Takashi Inoguchi (Professor, Chuo University, Japan) John Dunn (Professor, University of Cambridge, UK) Joan Kirby (Chair, NGO/DPI Executive Committee, USA) Walter Reese-Schaefer (Professor, University of Goettingen, Germany) Longxi Zhang (Professor, City University of Hong Kong, China) Jaeho Yeom (Professor, Korea University) 2006 Peace BAR Festival 12 >13

As a result, citizens discontented with contemporary politics centered on state authority have sought to become empowered as they actively participate in society.
