1 In Celebration of the 32 nd Anniversary of the United Nations International Day of Peace Peace BAR Festival Civilizations and Higher Education In Search of Great Learning 25(Wed)~27(Fri) September, 2013
2 Purpose In the early twenty-first century, we are faced with unprecedented civilizational phenomena. It is no longer possible to understand the radical changes that are taking place among humans and in the world within the existing frame. From climate change to energy and food depletion, conflicts between civilizations, and innovation in digital information and communication technology, a paradigm shift is occurring at a global level. At a time of such great transformations, reflecting on the present status of universities and forecasting the future of higher education requires a more complex, holistic, and long-term approach. Where does a university, which has been developing humans and driving civilization, stand today? What should the future university aspire to and in which direction should it go in order to realize better human beings and a better civilization? For the past 64 years, has integrated education, research, and practice in order to realize its founding philosophy, The Creation of a Civilized World, and has pursued global excellence in research and educational capacity. s tradition of Academe and Peace is also a vision to bring together greater learning and greater practice in the future. Scholarship that does not contribute to sustainable peace for humanity is not true scholarship. Likewise, learning that does not contribute to the creation of a better future for civilization is not true learning. We must pose bigger questions and seek greater learning. In this context, Peace BAR Festival 2013 seeks to redefine the original meaning of the university and portray a specific image of a true university of the future. Under the main theme Civilizations and Higher Education: In Search of Great Learning, various events including an international conference, youth forum, and culture and arts programs will be held. The festival will serve as a creative platform for scholarship and practice which looks towards the future of humanity that is spiritually Beautiful, materially Affluent, and humanly Rewarding. 2

7 International Conference Round Table : Challenges and Responsibilities of University in Times of Civilizational Transformation What are the alternatives to the process of civilizational transformation that is full of uncertainties and dangers? In order to be able to deal with this great transformation, universities must ask the question of their identities and roles. How and in what direction should the paradigm of higher education be transformed? How will new knowledge be constituted, and what methodologies need to be worked out? Universities must have a more fundamental awareness of their callings and a broader sense of responsibility. 10 Background of the UN International Day of Peace The International Day of Peace was proposed by and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in It was Kyung Hee University s then President, Dr. Young Seek Choue, who proposed the idea at the conference of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) held in San Jose, Costa Rica in The proposal was endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly on November 30, 1981 in resolution 36/67, which declared that the Day shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples and invited all member states, organs and organizations of the United Nations system, regional organizations, nongovernmental organizations, peoples and individuals to commemorate in an appropriate manner the International Day of Peace, especially through all means of education, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the observance of that day. The United Nations officially declared the third Tuesday of September as the International Day of Peace and the year of 1986 as the International Year of Peace. The International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) was timely in forecasting that the easing of Cold War tensions would contribute to world peace. As the world observed the UN International Year of Peace in 1986, the East and the West began to witness a new era in world history. On the first day of the year. US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev sent a message of peace to the people of their countries (January 1, 1986). The two powers thereafter saw a series of smooth disarmament talks. Afterwards, a plan to reduce nuclear weapons and efforts to relieve regional confrontations continued to defuse tension of the Cold War. 10
