2 Humanities and Social Sciences (previously S&E) is the study of human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental and political contexts. HASS has a historical and modern focus, from personal to global contexts and consider challenges for the future.

3 Humanities are the disciplines that study the human condition, using methods that are primarily analytical, critical or speculative: Ancient and Modern Languages Visual and Performing Arts Literature, History, Philosophy, Religion

5 Social Sciences are the folds of scholarship that study society. The term Social Science is commonly used as an umbrella term to refer to a plurality of fields outside the natural sciences, such as: Anthropology Archaeology Business Administration Communication Criminology Economics Education Government Linguistic International Relations Political Science Sociology Geography History Law Psychology

6 The field of human knowledge that deals with all aspects of the group life of human beings. It is subject to change with the changes of human behaviour.

8 Modern History examines the development and significance in the modern era. It also allows reflection on the significance of past events, people, beliefs and ideas, and how/why they are valued now. UNITS OF STUDY 1. Capitalism: The American Experience ( ) 2. Nazism in Germany ( ) Ancient History examines the values, beliefs and traditions within a society, the continuity between different societies and different time periods and the importance of individuals. 9 Geography is the structured way of exploring, analysing and understanding the characteristics of places that make up our world, using the concept of place, space, environment, interconnection, sustainability, scale and change. 10 Politics and Law examines the roles and powers of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government. It also studies the influence of individuals, political parties and pressure groups on the lawmaking process of parliament and the courts. The operation of federalism and the balance of power between the Commonwealth and the State governments in Australia is also critically examined. 11 Psychology is the study of how we think, feel and act. It aims to answer important questions such as what motivates people and what factors influence their development. Valuable insights and understanding into both humans and their environment/worlds are critically examined. Complementary Courses to Psychology Human Biology UNITS OF STUDY 1. 12 Career and Enterprise investigates personal career development. Focusing on self-management and personal strengths and weaknesses as integral to life long learning and career building. 14 History, Politics and Legal Studies: A historian is not merely concerned with the tracing of the history of the political process by a narration of episodes. A historian has to learn the nature of fundamental political principles and basic forms of political institution. History and Psychology: History and Psychology are also closely linked. An historian must have to show some psychological insights while making an analysis of the motive and actions of men and societies. The personal life and the environment of a historian has a direct bearing in his decision and often import a bias to his account and renders the much desired objectivity impossible. History and Geography: Universally it is accepted that History and Geography have very close ties. In fact it would be practically impossible to study; certain branches of history without rudimentary knowledge of geography. It is a fact that many geographical factors such as climate, social, rivers, mountains, sea, coastline and mineral resources aided the development of cultures. Geography also plays an important role in the national character formation and influence the human behaviour.
