2 What is it all about? Are you interested in people and society? Do you ask yourself why events happen or what makes people act a certain way? Studying Humanities and Social Science courses will help you explain these questions and understand the world around you. You can study everything from the ancient civilisations of Rome and Greece to the modern law of the United Kingdom. What can I study? 4 New York Fly to New York and visit the sights, including the 9/11 memorial and museum, Ellis Island and the statue of Liberty and the United Nations building on our department-wide trip to the States. You may also catch a show on Broadway, go ice skating in Central Park and even have time for a spot of shopping. Trip to the Houses of Parliament Visit the House of Lords and House of Commons to find out more about the role of Parliament. Their experts will talk to us about the historical, political and legal context of the buildings, as well as give us an inside preview of what bills are being discussed and other current affairs issues. Political debates and Question Time Voice your opinion at one of our political events throughout the year. Past sessions included should Britain remain in the EU? and Question Time with Ed Miliband. We host them in the main hall and invite local MPs to share their thoughts and encourage lively discussion. Our debates have even made the press! Behind Bars conference Hear ex-convicts discuss the realities of prison life and contemplate topics such whether prisons are a place for retribution, rehabilitation or punishment. You will have the chance to question convicted burglars and murderers to critically examine criminal behaviour and consider a different perspective on the sentencing and treatment of criminals.

5 I chose to study here because of the community feel; I get one to one support and I like that the subjects and teachers are really well connected. Studying this mix of courses has helped me decide on applying to study Social Policy at university. April Hicks Studying Politics, Law and Sociology It s Our England project Explore what it means to be English through our project with the University of Winchester. We debate the concept of Englishness with MPs and lecturers from the University and use their responses to plan a community event. Auschwitz competition Enter the Holocaust Educational Trust competition to be in with a chance of visiting Auschwitz. You will also have the chance to attend two guest lectures in London where you will meet a Holocaust survivor. You may also have the chance to take part in: African Adventures trip to Tanzania National Citizenship Service History trip to Berlin Bethlem Hospital visit Marwell Zoo Psychology observations Disneyland Paris Psychology conference Old Bailey and the Houses of Parliament trips Visit local courts in Southampton and Portsmouth National Geographical Association Lectures

6 One of my favourite things about studying here is the variety of trips and experiences you can go on. In February I was fortunate to go to Rome and now we re planning a History trip to Berlin! The teachers enjoy trips as much as the students and are more than happy to consider any ideas you may have.
