1 Complementary Studies Elective Courses Effective July 1, 2017 The Complementary Studies component of the Bachelor of Engineering Degree programs at Lakehead University consists of three parts. Students are required to complete the equivalent of five term courses (total credit weight 5 x 0.5 FCE = 2.5 FCE) from; a) Sociology 2755: Technology, Society and the Indigenous People in Canada (credit weight: 0.5 FCE) b) Engineering 4539: Professional Practice and Law (credit weight: 0.5 FCE) c) Complementary Studies Electives from Course List A and/or Course List B (credit weight: 1.5 FCE): o Course List A: 1 to 3 equivalent term courses (0.5 to 1.5 FCE) o Course List B: 0 to 2 equivalent term courses (0 to 1.0 FCE) On occasion, students may find it convenient to interchange the position of their Complementary studies and engineering elective from one term to another in their program in order to accommodate course selection. Complementary Studies courses may also be taken during the Spring and Summer terms if available. Students may obtain counselling on Complementary Studies electives from the Chair of their Department. The responsibility for prerequisites and other course restrictions rests with the student. Lakehead University's distance education and web-based courses are acceptable in the Complementary Studies program as of July 1, Courses from other Universities may be acceptable but require a formal Letter of Permission approved by your Engineering Department Chair. Information about the Letter of Permission is available from Student Central, on myinfo, and from your Engineering Department Office. (a) Impact of Technology on Society Sociology 2755: Technology, Society and the Indigenous People in Canada Normally this course is taken in the term and year specified in the University Calendar.

2 (b) Professional Ethics, Equity, and Law Engineering 4539: Professional Practice and Law Normally this course can only be taken by fourth year students in the last term of the program. (c) Complementary Studies Electives Students must select a total of 3 term courses (1.5 FCE) from the following lists approved by the Faculty of Engineering at the time of registration. Not all courses are offered each year. Consult the Lakehead University course timetable for details. Note, for example, full (two term) courses are indicated by YA, YB, etc; FA is used for fall term courses and WA for winter term courses. Additional information about course numbering is available in the Lakehead University Calendar. It is the student's responsibility to consult the Lakehead University Calendar for official information about credit weight, prerequisites and restrictions for all courses listed. List A - Humanities and Social Sciences At least one term course (0.5 FCE) MUST be selected from this list. Alternatively, two or three courses could be taken from this list.
