4 SQ3R: S = Survey SURVEY Provides: Ø Becoming aware of important / significant points before reading the chapter/article Ø Framework to fill in information while reading the chapter/article Ø Getting the Big Picture
5 SQ3R: S = Survey HOW to Survey: " Briefly look over the Table of Contents " Scan through the pages of the chapter/article " Read introduction (or introductory paragraph) " Skip to and read the Conclusion, Summary, & Review Questions " Be aware of core ideas via: " Titles " Headings / subheadings " Words in bold or italics " Captions under graphs, charts, pictures & illustrations
6 SQ3R: Q = Question QUESTIONING Provides: By asking questions while reading, it helps you to: " stay focused " be invested " creates interest " decreases uh, what did I just read?
7 SQ3R: Q = Question HOW to Question: Ø Change titles, headings & subheadings into questions Ø Ask yourself questions along the way about what you are reading Ø Review questions at the end of the chapter Ø Stopping at each new heading & ask yourself What did I just read? What am I about to read?
8 SQ3R: R = Read READING Provides: Ø Focus on the important information Ø For difficult sections, reduce or speed and/or re-read Ø Preparation for class, discussion & exams
9 SQ3R: R = Read HOW to Read I: Ø Look for answers to questions you raised earlier Ø Highlight key points (however avoid over-marking) Ø Write brief notes in margins Ø Use a consistent system for marking important points
10 SQ3R: R = Read HOW to Read II: Ø Do not confuse highlighting for learning the reading Ø Answer questions at end of chapter after reading Ø Note all bold, underlined, and italicized words and content around these words
