2 While the news about this year s election has been dominated by discussions about the personalities of the candidates for president, the election of officials at all levels will have important implications for the formation of policy. What impact has the election politics had on the political engagement of America s youth? What is the history of our criminal justice system and what are the chances of reform? The Bucknell Institute for Public Policy has organized a series of evening lectures, Pizza & Policy panels, and opportunities for you to be engaged in the political process. Join us as we ask the vital policy questions.

3 ELECTION 2016 Series What s at stake? S EP TEM BER Sept. 15 Pizza & Policy Forum: Election 2016: What s at Stake? ACWS Event Lounge, 11a.m.-12 p.m. Join three members of Bucknell s Political Science Department to discuss the current state of the 2016 campaign, the issues and events that will define its last few months, and the policy stakes of elections for the President and Congress. Panelists: Prof. Meinke, Prof. Nielson and Prof. Ellis, Political Science Dept. Sept. 22 Pizza & Policy Forum: The People & The Police ACWS Event Lounge, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Prof. Massaro and Bucknell Institute for Public Policy Research Students; Ty Chung, Maddie Galvez and Patricha Williams, will discuss their research in Philadelphia on policing practices and resident s views on the police.

4 Sept. 22 Does the Party Still Decide? Presidential Nominations in 2016 and Beyond ELC Forum, 7 p.m. David Karol: Associate Professor at University of Maryland Department of Government and Politics and co-author of The Party Decides: Presidential Nominations, Before and After Reform The 2016 presidential nomination campaign was full of surprises and has led to an unconventional fall campaign. In view of these developments, what can we say about the way parties choose candidates and what it means for our political system? Sept. 23 Election 2016 Policy Panel ACWS Event Lounge, 5:30-6:30 p.m. With the election only weeks away, what are the policy positions of the candidates? A panel of distinguished faculty from the Bucknell Institute for Public Policy will be discussing immigration, trade and healthcare policy issues from the current campaigns. Panelist: Prof. Durden (SOCI), Prof. Magee (ECON) and Prof. Wolaver, Director, Bucknell Institute for Public Policy. Sept. 26 Pizza and Policy: First Presidential Debate ELC Forum, 8 p.m. Prior to the debate, professors from the Political Science Dept. will be on hand to discuss the candidates and where they stand on the issues. Pizza and drinks for all who attend.

5 October Oct. 13 Incarceration Nation: How the United States Became the Most Punitive Democracy in the World ELC Forum, 7 p.m. Peter Enns is Associate Professor in the Department of Government and Executive Director of the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. As citizens, activists and politicians increasingly question our criminal justice system and the costs of mass incarceration, it is more important than ever to understand why the U.S. became the world s incarceration leader. Peter Enns will explain how standard explanations of the rise of mass incarceration fall short and why we must look to the public to understand how the U.S. became the Incarceration Nation. Oct. 20 Pizza and Policy Forum: Immigration Policy and the 2016 Elections ACWS Event Lounge, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Bucknell professors will discuss current US policies with respect to immigration, the economic, cultural and philosophical issues behind immigration policy, and the importance of immigration in the 2016 election. 6 Oct. 27 Pizza and Policy Forum: Trade Deal or Trade War? National Politics and the Future of Trade Relations ACWS Event Lounge, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Panelist will discuss the policy debate surrounding trade deals in this year s election. What are the politics involved, what will be the impact on workers and the global economy and how will the international community react? Panelist: Prof. Doces (POLS) Prof. Lin (ECON), Prof. Magee (ECON) November Nov. 1 Running from Office: Why Young Americans are Turned Off to Politics ELC Forum, 7 p.m. Jennifer Lawless is Professor of Government at American University, where she is also the Director of the Women & Politics Institute. Based on a national survey of more than 4,000 high school and college students, Jennifer Lawless argues that a devastating consequence of contemporary politics is the systematic alienation of most young people. It discourages them from aspiring to be elected leaders. It turns them off from even thinking about a career in politics. It signals that good, smart people are better suited steering clear of the political process. It s not all gloom and doom though. Based on what she learned from these young people, Lawless also offers solutions to spur young people s ambition to run for office.
