1 PO/SO/HS 331 UNDERSTANDING CONTEMPORARY SPAIN: POLITICS, SOCIETY AND HISTORY IES Abroad Barcelona DESCRIPTION: Why are Spaniards currently exhuming mass graves of the Civil War? How can the country tolerate an unemployment rate of 25 percent? Why has Catalan and Basque nationalism dominated politics for decades? Why does a country with a historic reputation for machismo boast such progressive laws on gender and gay marriages? How come political corruption remains so prevalent? This course examines political and social issues relevant to Spaniards today. It begins by discussing recent history in order to contextualize the major themes of the past few decades. It then moves to those subjects that emerged out of the transition to democracy regionalism, terrorism, and linguistic pluralism and still account for many of the peculiarities of Spanish politics. The second half of the course analyzes Spain s Second Transition under José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero by focusing on immigration, Islamic fundamentalism, foreign policy, gender and family relations, historical memory, political corruption, and the economic crisis. In the very last part of the class we will analyze the new social movements and the crisis of disaffection towards political life that Spaniards are undergoing today. The course is multi disciplinary, consisting of a mixture of readings from political science, history, and cultural studies. Each session will consist of a lecture and a class discussion. CREDITS: 3 credits LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English PREREQUISITES: None METHOD OF PRESENTATION: Class discussions, lectures, documentary viewings. Class discussion: The majority of each class will consist of discussions of key themes. Students will be provided with the texts to read for each class on Moodle, together with a list of reading questions designed to focus their attention on key points and concepts in the texts. These will form the basis of the class discussions. Lectures: The professor will supplement class discussions with lectures to help the students interpret the material provided in the class readings, to tie the readings together, and provide summaries of theoretical approaches to the subject. Documentary viewings: There will be two documentary viewings throughout the course. The documentaries will be screened prior to the class. Students will be provided with viewing and discussion questions to be completed on Moodle before the class starts. The documentaries will serve as material for discussion of the theoretical concepts covered in the course. REQUIRED WORK AND FORM OF ASSESSMENT: Class Participation 15% Oral Presentation 5% Essay 20% Midterm Exam 30% Final Exam 30% Class Participation and Class Presentation Students will be expected to come to class prepared and to participate actively in class. Students will also be required to give a short class presentation of their essay. Essay Students will write an essay on one of the next 20 topics using required, recommended and supplementary readings. The essay should be 8 to 10 pages long (standard margins and fonts). The completed essays will be submitted as assignments on Moodle. Essay topics: To what extent has Spanish society come to terms with the legacy of the Civil War, Francoism and the repression? Why has terrorism persisted in the Basque Country despite the advent of democracy?

2 Discuss and evaluate the merits and drawbacks of linguistic normalization in Catalonia. How have gender and family relations changed since the transition to democracy? Discuss and evaluate the challenges that immigration presents in Spain today. Discuss and evaluate the most salient characteristics of Zapatero s Second Spanish Transition? To what extent has Spanish foreign policy (and policy toward the European Union) shifted since the transition to democracy? What are the main characteristics of the economic crisis is undergoing today? What political consequences is this crisis likely to have? Describe and analyze the movement of the Indignant. Describe and analyze the secessionist movement in Catalonia. Midterm and Final Exams Both the midterm and the final exams will consist on essay questions, multiple choice questions, short answer questions and justified True/False questions. LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course students will be able to: engage directly in debates concerning events in Spain currently covered in the news. articulate the historical context of regional tensions in Spain today. analyze the tremendous changes that have taken place within Spanish society and culture over the past three decades. demonstrate knowledge of the major issues relevant to Spaniards and Europeans today, including immigration, unemployment, the economic crisis, gender relations, and the European Union. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory for all IES Abroad classes, including course related trips. Any exams, tests, presentations, or other work missed due to student absences can only be rescheduled in cases of documented medical or family emergencies. If a student misses more than three classes in any course 3 percentage points will be deducted from the final grade for every additional absence.
