The migrations that accompanied industrialization transformed both urban and rural areas of the United States and caused dramatic social and cultural change. The Gilded Age produced new cultural and intellectual movements, public reform efforts, and political debates over economic and social policies. 2 Potential Essay Questions Evaluate the extent to which the goals of Reconstruction ( ) regarding African-Americans were achieved by Be sure to address both continuities as well as changes during this time period. (continuity and change) Evaluate the extent to which women s activism contributed to maintaining continuity as well as fostering change in United States society from the 1840s through the 1880s. (continuity and change) To what extent and in what ways did the conservation and preservation movements in the late 19th century extend public control over U.S. natural resources? Support your answer with specific and relevant historical information. (causation) To what extent and in what ways did Southern industrialists attempts to create a New South alter the South s economy and society? Support your answer with specific and relevant historical information. (causation) Both the Jacksonian Democrats during and the Populists during attacked and sought out special privilege in American life. The Jacksonian Democrats attained power and succeeded; the Populists failed. Explain and evaluate the validity of this view. (comparison) 6. Compare the actions of the United States government toward native tribes focusing on the pre-civil War ( ) period, and the post-civil War ( ). Be sure to address both similarities and differences. 3 SOCRATIC SEMINAR We will be using this method as a way to learn about changes in the west between the Civil War and We will work on this over two days. Overall Question: How was the West transformed from the Civil War to 1890? Rules Read and annotate the text Come prepared to class with questions to ask in your group o These could be clarifying questions of the information o These could be questions that will allow others to participate in the discussion You do not need to raise your hand to talk Don t interrupt other speakers; wait your turn to talk For full credit you will need to speak at least three times on each topic of discussion Remember that this is not a debate; it s an opportunity to glean as much indepth information as we can from the reading Points This will count as quiz scores on both days. Points will come from your preparation, your participation, and your reflection.
