1 Party Politics on European Integration in Comparative Perspective (Hauptseminar HWS 2016/17) DATES AND LOCATION Thursday, 15:30 17:00 [ ] Building A5 Room B 318 INSTRUCTOR Constantin Schäfer Office: Building A5, Room constantin.schaefer@uni-mannheim.de Phone: Office hours: Monday, 14:30-16:00 (please send an before coming) CONTENT Whether it is the AfD in Germany, the FN in France or the UKIP in the United Kingdom: populist Eurosceptic parties have gained massive ground in recent years all around Europe. The goal of this seminar is to understand the commonalities and variations in these developments and to analyze how they affect the party systems of EU member states. In order to do so, we will first recap conceptual and methodological approaches to analyze parties, party systems and party competition. In the second half of the course, we will read and discuss recent empirical studies about party politics on European integration from a comparative perspective. Questions that will be answered are, for example: What types of Eurosceptic parties can we identify across Europe and how do they relate to the traditional (mainstream) parties? What role does political competition on European integration play for different party systems? What is the relationship between parties and voters in this respect? Every week, students prepare written homeworks connected to mandatory readings (to be found on ILIAS) that are then discussed in class. Regular attendance, good preparation and active participation are key for fruitful discussions in class and the success of the whole seminar. Since the course esp. the second part deals mainly with quantitative empirical studies, a basic knowledge of these statistical methods is essential. At the end of the semester, students are asked to develop their own research proposal and present it in class, before eventually writing their own research paper on a topic closely related to the content of the course. Preferably, this should be an own empirical analysis from a comparative perspective, but could also be a case/country study or a literature review, especially for those not firm in quantitative methods. 1
2 BASIC INFORMATION 7 ECTS Recommended for students in the fifth semester of the Political Science B.A. Online registration on Portal² and ILIAS is mandatory (all available documents and upload of homeworks on ILIAS) Teaching language is English HOW TO SUCCEED IN SHORT Regular attendance and active participation (max. two missed sessions without documentation, e.g. doctoral attestation) Weekly preparation of mandatory readings with homeworks (to be uploaded in ILIAS) Writing and presenting a research proposal in class and reviewing the research proposal of one fellow student Writing a (final) research paper which will be graded Deadlines: o Research proposals: o Research papers: READINGS, HOMEWORKS AND CLASS PARTICIPATION For each week there are mandatory readings for all course participants and homeworks that will be announce orally in class or via . All readings are available electronically via ILIAS. Please note: It is not only essential that you read these pieces of literature prior to the sessions in order to participate in the class discussions, but the homeworks are also mandatory in order to pass the course. Please upload them until 2 P.M. (14.00) at the day of the respective lesson in ILIAS and only bring a printed version in cases when the uploading has not worked. It is also highly recommended to bring a copy of the readings to class and to take notes during the discussion, as there won t be electronic slides prepared by the instructor. As you can imagine, class participation is absolutely necessary to make the weekly sessions interesting and beneficial to everyone. RESEARCH PROPOSAL, REVIEW, PRESENTATION AND FINAL PAPER At the end of the semester, students are asked to develop and carry out an own (empirical) research project, which naturally should relate to the contents of the seminar. For that purpose, you need to submit a first research proposal that includes a working title, the research question, a preliminary content overview and a short bibliography (the deadline will be announced in class). The proposals will then be presented in class, which will take place in the last session of the semester. Afterwards, each presenter will be reviewed by one fellow student and the course instructor. For this purpose, students are asked to write a review beforehand and bring it to class. The final paper itself needs to be written in English. The length of the paper should be around words (+/- 10%), which is around 15 pages. It needs to be uploaded until the 15 th January 2017 in electronic form to ILIAS and submitted as a printed copy at the Chair of Comparative Government the following day (16 th Jan 2017) at the Chair of Comparative Government (either at my office or at the secretary s office A336). The printed version needs to include a signed declaration of authorship). 2
