3 THE PRELIMS MYTH. Civils360 s It is a common notion that UPSC prelims is a tough nut to crack. The questions often seem to be unpredictable and sourced from vast channels. But we beg to differ!!! Studying the few right books and having the right approach can ensure your success. WHY DO PEOPLE OFTEN FAIL IN PRELIMS? We always see people with great knowledge and consistently high marks in mock test failing to clear prelims. Why do this happen? Because aspirants always tend to overestimate the role of knowledge in cracking prelims.they go on building knowledge without a proper understanding on the nature of questions being asked.an analysis of prelims question papers from 2012 onwards show that there is a definite trend in the prelims questions. CIVILS 360'S PRELIMS ANALYSIS Team CIVILS360 will decode this trend for you using questions of 2018 prelims that is considered as the toughest one in recent years. We will show you that it is nothing but an extension of a trend that UPSC has been following since 2012.The questions asked in the prelims falls under three heads DIRECT,INDIRECT AND LOGICAL. A. DIRECT QUESTIONS: These questions are directly sourced from standard materials. Understanding concepts of standard books are more than enough to answer them. The standard books are: - NCERT, LAXMIKANTH(INDIAN POLITY), NITIN SINGHANIA (ART & CULTURE), SPECTRUM (MODERN INDIA), SHANKAR (ENVIRONMENT) and THE HINDU newspaper. Study only these materials and DIRECT QUESTIONS can be easily answered. Around 20 questions were asked in 2018 prelims from this section alone. EXAMPLE 1: 1. Right to Privacy is protected as an intrinsic part of Right to Life and Personal Liberty. Which of the following in the Constitution of India correctly and appropriately imply the above statement? (a) Article 14 and the provisions under the 42nd Amendment to the Constitution (b) Article 17 and the Directive Principles of State Policy in Part IV For Registration: Civils360.com
4 (c) Article 21 and the freedoms guaranteed in Part III (d) Article 21 and the provisions under the 44th amendment to the Constitution (DIRECT FROM LAXMIKANTH) 2. Consider the following statements: 1. The Barren Island volcano is an active volcano located in the Indian territory. 2. Barren Island lies about 140 km east of Great Nicobar. 3. The last time the Barren island volcano erupted was in 1991 and it has remained inactive since them. Which of the statements given above is/are correct? (a) 1 only (b) 2 and 3 (c) 3 only (d) 1 and 3 ( MENTIONED IN HINDU ) B.INDIRECT QUESTIONS: They look like difficult questions to solve. But they are nothing but applications of things we have already studied for DIRECT QUESTIONS. EXAMPLE1: 1.He wrote biographies of Mazzini, Garibaldi, Shivaji and Shri Krishna; stayed in America for some time ; and was also elected to the Central Assembly. He was : (a) Aurobindo Ghosh (b) Bipin Chandra Pal (c) Lala Lajpat Rai (d) Motilal Nehru AUROBINDO GHOSH was never elected to assembly.motilal Nehru as a moderate is unlikely to write biographies of radical extremist leaders(both mentioned in spectrum). And in ncert its mentioned that LALA LAJPAT RAI founded home rule movement in America in 1917.Hence we zero in on option C. 2.Which one of the following foreign travellers elaborately discussed about diamonds and diamond mines of India? (a) Francois Bernier (b) Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (c) Jean de Thevenot For Registration: Civils360.com
5 (d) Abbe Barthelemy Carre In Ncert culture text book its mentioned that Jean-Baptiste Tavernier is a gold merchant who visited india six times which lead us to option B. C.LOGICAL QUESTION: these questions form the majority in prelims question paper.just the basic knowledge and logical thinking helps us to crack all these questions quite easily. EXAMPLE 1; 1.In 1920, which of the following changed its name to Swarajya Sabha? (a) All India Home Rule League (b) Hindu Mahasabha (c) South Indian Liberal Federation (d) The Servants of India Society Option A is the only name with connection to word SWARAJYA. 2.Who among the following were the founders of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha established in 1948? (a) B.Krishna Pillai, E.M.S. Namboodiripad and K.C. George (b) Jayaprakash Narayan, Deen Dayal Upadhyay and M.N.Roy (c) C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer, K. Kamaraj and Veeresalingam Pantulu (d) Ashok Mehta, T.S Ramanujam and G.G. Mehta Option A and C has names that belong to south india.deenadayal and MN Roy had opposite ideologies which we will know once we cover the basics.hence option D. PRELIMS 2018 is considered the toughest not because questions were asked randomly but because number of DIRECT QUESTIONS were unusually lower. But in that too questions were pretty predictable. Every year around questions are asked from the above three categories.lack of understanding of nature of questions will compel us to focus on DIRECT QUESTIONS alone.the DIRECT QUESTIONS account to just questions and rest will fall in the other two categories.and inevitably there will be random questions that cannot be answered unless we cover numerous other sources like YOJANA,KURUKSHETRA,INDIA YEAR BOOK,current affair compilations of various institutes. Most aspirants fall for this trap. Better leave those questions for prelims and focus on area that are rewarding. For Registration: Civils360.com
6 We don t blame you..!! When there are numerous sources available to aspirants and exaggerated claims by institutes this is bound to happen. We study more than required and thus neglect the importance of solving INDIRECT and LOGIC questions. WHY PRELIMSURE...? Any mock test will suffice your need for practicing DIRECT QUESTIONS.But most of them fail to train you for facing questions from other two categories.our closely curated mock test will address this aspect.they will test your knowledge in the conventional area and at the same time teaches you to eliminate options, think laterally, manage time and to devise your own strategy before prelims. We, team CIVILS360 can promise you one thing: study only the standard textbooks, revise them, practice our tests and you will surely clear the prelims. To ensure that you complete the journey we will assign personal mentor to clear your doubts regarding approach and strategy. They will be available to you till prelims exam Goal / Objectives of the PRELIMSURE 2019 The Goal of the PRELIMSURE 2019 is to take you through to the complete journey of preparation from an amateur to a successful candidate. The Test Series has a unique three tier system that ensures that You build your basics well. You learn how to apply them and use logical thinking in right way.
