What structures can you control? Satisfy simple and predictable personal and accommodation needs. Meet courtesy, introduction and identification requirements. Exchange predictable and skeletal biographical information Buy plane ticket and food. Book a room in a hotel. Give information about business hours. State in a simple matter what actions will be taken. Explain routine procedure in a limited way. 3 main tasks: 1. Answering simple questions. 2. Asking simple questions. 3. Role play (casual topic w/o complication). Simple sentences and simple questions types of errors you may Accuracy is random. Grammatical errors could be in almost every sentence. Courtesy: greetings, introduction, apologies, thanks Personal: age, nationality, occupation and employer, where from, interests and hobbies, family Travel & accommodations: parts of the house, furniture, colors, clothes and personal travel items, daily routine verbs, hours and dates, major countries, major food, vocabulary for buying and booking. Nouns: gender, cases (basic endings, no exceptions). Adjectives: gender and case, adjective types. Pronouns: personal, possessive, demonstrative. Numerals: cardinal and ordinal. Verbs: three tenses, intro to aspect. Syntax: noun-adjective and subject-predicate coordination. Page 1
3 Level 2/Intermediate Limited Working Proficiency weeks (15 weeks) Handle most casual highfrequency interactions about everyday topics (bio, family, education, work, travel, hobbies) and current events. Give complicated, detailed and extensive directions. Narrate in the past, present and future about personal daily routine, travels, holidays. Make non-routine changes in travel and accommodation arrangements with elaboration and facility. Describe people and places. Satisfy limited work requirements: give straightforward instructions. 8 main tasks: 1.Narration in the present 2.Narration in the past 3.Narration in the future 4.Description (person, place) 5.Instruction 6.Directions 7.Current events. 8.Role play (casual topic with complication). Food: grocery shopping (food/ measurements/ prices), cooking, dining out (inviting a friend, reserving a table, ordering a meal, tips, table manners). Stores: store departments, measurements, sales, exchange/return. Travel & accommodations: city sight/ public transportations, hotel (booking, checking in/out), renting an apartment, buying plane/train tickets, tourist activities. Phone calls: making arrangements for meetings, leaving messages. Health: body parts, doctor s specialties, symptoms, deceases, treatments. Socializing: holidays, visits, invitations, guests (gifts, toasts), movies/ theaters (genres, buying tickets, discussing shows), sports, TV (discussing TV guide). Communication: use of internet/gadgets, post office. Current events: accidents (car, plane, train), natural disasters, crime/ terrorism (types of crimes & weapons), visits/ negotiations. What structures can you control? All Level 1 + Verbs: imperative, reflective, VOM go/drive/ride, verbal participles/adverbs. Pronouns: self, one another, negative, indefinite. Cases (adjectives, nouns, numerals): meanings of the cases, exceptions, numeral +adjective +noun structures. Numerals: collective Syntax: subjectless modal structures, passive structures, compound purpose clauses, indirect speech. Page 2
4 Level 2+/Intermediate High Limited Working Proficiency Plus weeks (12 weeks) What structures can you control? Participate in most social, formal and informal interactions with limitations either in range of contexts, types of tasks or level of accuracy. Satisfy most work requirements with language usage that is often, but not always, acceptable and effective. Show considerable ability to communicate effectively on topics related to particular interests and special fields of competence. Normally control but not always easily produce general vocabulary. 3 main tasks (social issues): 1.Supporting an opinion 2.Hypothesizing 3.Elaborating on abstract topic (causes, social impact, positions w/ arguments, solutions, comparison). 4. Role play (unknown situation). Can speak in paragraphs with extended simple sentences and basic compound/ complex sentences types of errors you may Can have awkward or inaccurate phrasing, mistaken time, space and person references or t be in some way inappropriate, if not strictly incorrect. Strong in either structural precision or vocabulary but not in both. Labor market: labor market structure and issues, unemployment and retirement systems (Russia vs US). Immigration: labor migrations/refugees, xenophobia (Russia, US, EU) Healthcare: healthcare systems/reforms, arguments about immunization, euthanasia, marijuana for medical purposes, palliative care, organ transplants, stem cells. Housing & urban life: types of housing, megacities vs small towns, urban/ rural life issues. Transportations & travel: a car (types of cars, parts of cars), bribes on the roads; train/ plane parts, airports. Tourism: popular destinations, landscapes, safety in travels, tourism & economy/ environment. Culture: theaters, movies, art, museums; pop-culture, classic & traditional culture, traditional beliefs. Communication (mass and social media, internet): media & government/business control, media & propaganda/freedom of speech, internet and privacy/ safety/addiction, social media & generation Y/ roits. Ecology: natural resources, pollutions, global warming, GMO and environment. All Level 2 plus Verbs: VOM/go (reinforcement) and the rest of VOM. Numerals: cardinal numerals declension, fractions. 5 Level 3/Advanced General Professional Proficiency weeks (12 weeks) What structures can you control? Participate in most formal and informal conversations in practical, social and professional topics with reasonable ease. Elicit information and informed opinion from native speakers. Use the language as part of normal professional duties, such as: - answering objections, - clarifying points, - justifying decisions, - stating and defending policy, - conducting meetings, - delivering briefings. 3 main tasks (social issues): 1.Supporting an opinion 2.Hypothesizing 3.Elaborating on abstract topic (background, causes & consequences 4. Role play (unknown situation) Extended, elaborate and well-structured monologue types of errors you may Sufficient structural accuracy. Errors occur in low-frequency and highly complex structures. They never cause misunderstanding and rarely disturb the native speaker. Use of structures is very flexible and elaborate. Pronunciation may be obviously foreign: individual sounds are accurate but stress and intonation may be faulty.
