Especially when we think about programs, we have to plan it carefully, but also we should decide which strategy we pursue, and even after the end of the program, we should analyze the result carefully so as to take it as an opportunity to develop ourselves as well as YMCA and civil society with new idea and programs. I hope that all of us could get praised from God with making a close inspection of our strategy again with the idea of it s not too late still even though March has already gone by. One day, I read a newspaper article about a strategy, and I would like to share the story. In the article, Professor Song introduces the strategy of Qi-Zheng( 寄正 ) of the Art of War by Sun Tzu. And he explains it with examples that we can apply it to real life in various areas. Henry Kissinger, so called the best diplomatic strategist in the 20s, and Liddell Hart, a prominent military strategist as well as military historian, said The Art of War by Sun Tzu is the best strategic book in the world. In this book, one of the strategis to win is the Qi-Zheng( 寄正 ) Strategy. Zheng( 正 ) means things that we know and enemy knows, and Qi( 寄 ) means things that we know but enemy doesn t know. Therefore, the Qi-Zheng Strategy means to fight enemy with Zheng, and to decide the winning with Qi. For examples, in the baseball, a pitcher confronts a hitter with a fast ball(zheng) but he uses breaking balls(qi) to decide the winning. In the case of a hospital that can make more income with a concession stand than a medical treatment, a medical treatment can be Zheng, and a concession stand can be Qi. So it means the hospital can take the lead with Qi. And also, there is a hotel making more income with renting a room as a wedding hall and conference hall(qi) than accommodations(zheng). Like this, individual has to have not only Zheng but also Qi in order to survive in a fiercely competitive society. As the times and society change, we YMCA have to plan new strategy of YMCA movement with new idea and programs as considering both Qi and Zheng and with fresh ideas and new programs in order to accomplish the ultimate purpose of extending the Kingdom of God. 2 The 24th Seoul YMCA National Basketball League for Workers Debate on Government Policy Direction of Seoul City s Physical Education Policy On March 11, the Seoul YMCA National Basketball League for Workers which is the biggest Club basketball league in Korea began with delegates of each teams, honored guests, and staffs at the gym of Gangnam YMCA. As commemorating the 109th anniversary of the association, co-hosted by Korean Basketball Association, the 24th Seoul YMCA National Basketball League for Workers has started on its big run of 33 weeks from the opening game of March 11 to December 11. The Seoul YMCA National Basketball League for Workers is the longest and biggest as well as the role model of club basketball league among club basketball leagues in Korea. And it also has public confidence due to co-hosting with Korean Basketball Association. As operating the league system and introducing the promotion system, it has taken on the aspect of modern sports model. About 2,100 players from 30 teams in the Dream League which is workers first league, 20 teams in the One-Mind League which is workers second league, and 10 club teams gather participate in the longest backetball club league. With the system of that 6 groups, 10 teams for each group, go through the preliminary round with full-league system, and 4 high ranked teams of each group go into the final tournaments, the final ranking is determinded. This league is the best and longest basketball league, so each one of the team members has to put ever effort to each game in the long period of league. Also as co-hosted by Korean Basketball Association, it has public confidence more and more as years go by and the Dead-Time system of 4 quarters in 9 minutes of each receives good response from participants. With dynamic tension due to the standalization of each team since the league promotion system was introduced and increasing fun of each game, it can expect participants to improve the performance. As starting the long journey of 9-month, we look forward to each one of players sportsmanship and fighting spirit. The association hosted the debate on Direction of Seoul City s Physical Education Policy to improve the fairness and effectiveness and secure the sustainability of Seoul City s physical education policy in the Fellowship Room on March 8. This debate was organized to discuss on how the Seoul City s physical education policy has to be changed in order to diagnose the current status of the policy, activate citizens participation, and devote to create healthy life of citizens in the viewpoint of fairness and effectiveness. Professor Shin Jae Hue(University of Seoul) presented the proposal, and Director Jeong Gwang Hyun(Promoting Physical Education Dept. of Seoul City Government), Deputy Manager Jeong Chang Su(Good Budget Center), President Gwan Oh Sang(Korean Physical Education Reporters Solidarity), Councilor Mun Sang Mo(Seoul City), and Deputy Division Director Yuh Bong Gu(Seoul YMCA) debated under the theme. In this debate, there were several issues such as main cities in many countries put citizens participation ahead of anything else thourgh political promotion to promote citizens healthy life and budget support, the physical education policy of Seoul City is not to build facilities and support the related organizations but to create citizens healthy life and unite society, it s time for the physical education policy to change innovatively into citizens participation oriented policy etc. Even though it s the first time for the association to deal with the physical education policy of Seoul City Government, it was a meaningful time to share the hope of that national policy of physical education could be changed if municipal policy is changed. It s time for Physical Education to be changed to the Social Solicarity by Sports 2

3 Seoul YMCA Consumer Center for Auto Reliability and Safety These day, the number of registered car is over 1.8 million in Korea. It s the time of Automobile Society that automobile is the most popular consumption item. For this reason, citiznes are under great strain of enormous expenses related to vehicles including repair cost, fuel expenses etc as well as the purchase price of vehicle. And also they are at a dangerous situation due to traffic accident, dangers caused by defective vehicles etc. Furthermore, the situation of that the consumers of vehicles can t voice out is continuing because the market structure isn t competive and the limitation of accessing information and professionalism. With this, on February 1, the association opened the YMCA Consumer Center for Auto Reliability and Safey with Mr. Kim Jong Hun who had taken care of the automobile recall and damage relief for 20 years at the Korea Consumer Agency, and initiated campaign to protect consumers right and establish the right relations between automobile company and consumers through proposing recall, correction, on the basis of consumers report about automobile safety, after-sales service, inconvenience etc. Youth Debate Day Culture and Youth of 200 teenagers on how they accept the Day culture and consume it. On the data, the most popular Day is Pepero Day, and Valentines Day is on the second place, and White Day is on the third place. Rose Day, Black Day, White Day, and Kiss Day are followed next. Male is more positive to the Day culture than female, and also male has more expenses than female. Most teenagers are positive to the Day culture because of building strong relationship, fun events etc, but some of them are negative because of forming a sense of alienation and sales gimmick. And also, they recognized it as one of the playculture and the stress relievers. On the basis of the survey result, the debate the pros and cons of Day culture was followed. There are a lot of Day s settling down as youth s natural culture. Because teenagers exchange gifts on the 14th of each month taking a speical day, they call it fourteen day. Including well-known Valentine s Day(Feb. 14) and White Day(Mar. 14), there are many Day s to settle down as a anniversary such as Diary Day(Jan. 14), Black Day(Apr. 14), Rose Day(May. 14), Kiss Day(Jun. 14), Silver Day(Jul. 14), Green Day(Aug. 14), Photo Day(Sep. 14), Wine Day(Oct. 14), Movie Day(Nov. 14), Money Day(Dec. 14) etc. Without these, there are Pepero Day on Nov. 14 that stacking of 4 1 s reminds stick snacks and Couple Day on Feb. 22. As continuing debate with listening the opposite side, the gap between two groups seemed to become smaller. On the conclusion, the cons formed an overall opinion that the Day culture could be continued without denying itself if solutions for the deterioration of it comes out, and the pros formed an overall opinion that there s a need to supplement today s Day culture. In order to listen youth s opinion on how these Day s affect youth and how they think abouth the Day culture, the Youth Activity Department of Seoul YMCA hosted the youth debate under the theme of Day Culture and Youth. In this debate, Mr. Jin Jeong Gyu(president of Seoul YMCA volunteers club), as a moderator, explained the result of survey 3

4 The 85th Memorial Service for Wolnam Lee Sang Jae The 7th Jongno Forum The association hosted the 85th Memorial Service for Wolnam Lee Sang Jae on March 29 at the Jongmyo Park. Over 200 guests including Professor Lee Sang Gu, a descendant of Wolnam Lee San Jae, Chairman Cho Ki Hung(Seoul YMCA), Director Mo Jong Ryul(Seoul North Branch of Ministry of Patriots & Veterans Affairs), Mr. Kim Young Jong(chief of Jongno-go Office), Chairman Ban Jae Chul(Young Korean Academy), Secretary General Jeong Yong Ho(Hulbert Memorial Society), Director Yang Seung Du(Wolnam Institute for Civil Culture Studies), President Ahn Chang Won(Seoul YMCA), a clan gathering of Hansan Lee gathered to look back on the memory of Wolnam Lee Sang Jae of a independent activist, youth movement activist and educator. During service, Chairman Cho Ki Hung said the teaching of Wolnam is spiritulized to the racial spirit, so it became a guide of Korea these days as well as independence. and I m sure that our wise people can overcome the dangerous situation at the moment, and the day when we gather together as one with the One-mind spirit of Wolnam would come. Mr. Mo Jong Ryul said Nations unity and One-mind spirit that Wolnam emphasized is inperatively necessary value to us in order to build a respectful advanced country, all of us will follow his thought. Professor Lee Sang Gu delivered a message as a representative of Wolnam s decendents that It is the responsibility of us who have taken Wolnam as our guide to teach our youth rightly and make eternal development of this country. The association hosted the 7th Jongno Forum under the theme of Is Spring Coming in the Korean Peninsula? The Future of Kim Jeong Eun s System and the Korean Peninsula at the auditoriom of the association on February 29 for 2 hours with the keynote speaker, Professor Kim Geun Sik(Dept. of Political Science and Deplomacy of Gyeungnam University). This forum was hosted to predict the situation of the Korean Peninsula in 2012 and 2013 for the year of changing powers in both North and South Korea such as Mr. Kim Jeong Eun s appearance as a leader of North Korea, National Assembly election and Presidential election of South Korea etc. Furthermore, it was a time to look for the hope and solution for the peace of the Korean Peninsula by reviewing the direction of policy towards North Korea through Professor Kim Geun Sik who insists the Structual Embracement of the developmential evolution of the Engagement Policy Towards North Korea, as one solution for this dangerous and tensioned situation of the worst relationship with North Korea caused by President Lee Myung Park s tough stance against North Korea. 5 Management Agreement with Jongno-gu Government Office to Support School Sports Club Love Sharing Bazzar for Farming Area Love Sharing Bazzar for Farming Area was held by the association on February 29 in order to support poorly-fed children and the elderly living alone in the farming area with rice. In this even, the YMCA Opening Consumer Club and voluntary clubs of universities were participated. Home appliances, food & beverage, stationery etc supported by the Samsung Electronics, CJmall, Welbing Tech and Cj Cheil Jedang were sold to citizens and members. The money from selling the items at the charity will be spent to support the farming families most in need including poorly-fed children and the elderly living alone. The association made a MOU with Jongno-gu office to support school sports club in Jongno area as the overall implementation of the five-day school week on March 20. In the early of March, Jongno-gu office selected 7 elementary schools and middle schools to operate school sports clubs and 10 sports activities including football, basketball etc. And they decided to operate it from April. With this, voluntary sports teachers of the associaton will visit schools in person and help students to spend their healthy free time on weekends. Completion Ceremony of Training Course for Anti-Poverty Campaign Instructor and Teaching Demonstration The association hosted Completion Ceremony of Trainig Course for Anti-Poverty Campaign Instructor and Teaching Demonstration with the Public Conduct Network on February 28. through inspiring citizenship and collaboration campaign to solve poverty problem by themselves, not as a beneficiary of welfare system. Beginning with the first class on December 11, the total 10 classes were organized on every weekends until February 12, and 20 people from the poor who live in the split-room village, hostel, shelter etc were attended. 12 of them completed the training course and 4 of them demonstrated the lecture. In the ceremony, Representative Yun Pal Beung(Public Conduct Network) delivered a congraturatory speech, and members from related organizations and the persons concerned Seoul City were filled the place and celebrated their completion. Students who completed this training course will act as an instructor to inform poverty problem to public and find out an alternative. This training course is to nurture instructors from the poor who live in a place of less than 3.3 square meters so as to let them teach the other poor people, suggest an alternative for the poor community, and have them become a change agent for the purpose of the initiative of the autonomous campaign 5

6 Play, Torch of Korean Youth Project to Revive the National Spirit Wolnam Lee Sang Jae As an governmental office in the end of 1800 s, Wolnam Lee Sang Jae was the last retainer of Chosun Dynasty who put his effort to find out the western culture and the reality of western powers, and propose the right direction of enlightenment after visiting Japan as a member of the Courtier s Observation Mission, and U.S.A. as a secretary of the legation. He tried his best for the independence movement to protect Korea from western powers with establishing the Independence Club with Mr. Seo Jae Pil and Mr. Yun Chi Ho, participating the publication of the Independence Newspaper, taking the lead of the public political activities as a moderator of the People s Assembly etc. Life Story of Wolnam Lee Sang Jae, the symbol of youth movement and indepedence movement. After that, serving as the Chairman of the Education Committee and the first Korean General Secretary of the Seoul YMCA, he did his best to give a dream and hope to youth by introducing modern sports, leading the vocational education and night school etc. And also, he was one of the most respected social activist including both the right and left parties in Korea as being inducted to the president of Singanhoe. 15 thousands watched the play in Tokyo in Japan and 8 cities in Korea Wolnam Lee Sang Jae Memorial Society and the association had run the play of Wolnam Lee Sang Jae, Torch of Korean Youth, for 2 months starting from February 8 at the Korean YMCA in Japan to the end of March in Korea as a revivaling racial spirit project. The purpose of the play is to shed new light on the spirit of Wolnam Lee Sang Jae, who led the independent movement, YMCA Movement, journalism, Singanhoe s activities etc, and take the lead of the effort for national harmony & cooperation, and coexistence & peace with the One-mind spirit in the period of Japanese Occupancy, in order to propose the vision of Korea for the future, in the modern society of increasing confrontation and conflict politically, economically, socially and culturally. This play, hosted by the association with local YMCAs in Korea and supervised by Wolnam Lee Sang Jae Memorial Society, was made by President Pyo Jae Sun(JS Theater) who was an executive director of the Olympics in 1988 and the Millenium Festival, and 30 famous actors including Mr. Ki Jeong Su were in the play. After the first stage in Tokyo, Japan, we delivered the message of harmony and coexistence during a play tour at 8 cities in Korea. Starting from Tokyo, Japan, for 2 months of a play tour, 15 thousands of people watched this play at Incheon, Ulsan, Daegu, Busan, Gwanju, Daejeon, Seochun, and Gongju in Korea. 6
