4 Thanksgiving is coming and we would like to bless our friends and neighbors in our backyard with a Thanksgiving dinner for the neighborhood held here at Middlebury Chapel on Saturday, November 21 st from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Help is needed with meal preparation, set-up, serving, clean-up, monitoring, and ministry. If you are interested in helping in any capacity, please see or contact Christina Tyser This meal and really (if you ask him) the whole concept has been thought up, played out, drawn out, worked and slaved over a hot stove all day and produced by Robert Big Rob Atomic Dawg Sadler in association with DoyneGergonTyser productions. 5 Fall tends to be a season of reflection upon the year gone by and a time for a greater appreciation of just how gracious and generous the Lord has been to us, both individually and corporately as a church body. In honor of our wonderful Middlebury family, the Elders would like to invite you to join us after service next Sunday, November 8 th, for a Fun & Fellowship Potluck Meal. The sole purpose of this gathering is to spend time together and to encourage the building and strengthening of friendships, relationships, and unity within our body while slammin on some awesome chow. However, there is one catch In order to avoid people missing the morning service because they are watching or cooking their food, whatever is brought for the meal should not need to be attended (i.e. turned, sautéed, basted, stirred constantly, etc.). Please bear this in mind when planning your meal item. Please bring a main dish and a dessert so we can be sure to have enough food for everyone. So mark your calendar and plan on bringing your yummiest recipes to share and come prepared to just relax and spend a wonderful afternoon with your Middlebury Chapel family. 7 What a Church and Pastor Can and Cannot Do Legally With Regard To Politics Each day the news demonstrates that there is an ongoing battle over religious liberties and our ability to live out our faith in our daily lives. The willingness to speak out on issues of the day is critical when it comes to matters of government officials and public policies that impact our faith, our families and our values on a daily basis. There is a lot of misinformation about what churches are allowed to do in the political arena misinformation that is spread by liberals and groups that don t want to see conservative people of faith speak out and have an impact. They attempt to scare pastors from participating by claiming that, if they get involved, their church will lose its tax-exempt status. But that s just not true. Don t be intimidated and withdraw from the arena!! Know the facts and have an impact!! Here s a simple list of what churches can and cannot do in politics: What A Church MAY DO Legally: Engage in Voter Registration that refrains from stressing a particular political party. Distribute Material that is educational to voters, but which refrains from favoring any particular candidate or party, such as the Ohio Christian Alliance Voter Guide. Conduct candidate or issues forums where each duly qualified candidate is invited and provided an equal opportunity to speak. Allow candidates or elected officials to speak at church services. Churches that allow only one candidate or a single political party s candidate to speak can be seen as favoring that candidate or party. No candidate should be prohibited from addressing a church if others running for the same offiec have been allowed to speak. A church can influence legislation through lobbying. A church may spend no more than an insubstantial amount of its annual budget (5 percent is a safe amount) on direct lobbying activities. Page 1

8 Contribute funds to citizen organizations such as Ohio Christian Alliance. The 5 percent rule applies here as well and is inclusive of all lobbying. Lobbying activities and contributions combined should not exceed 5 percent of the church's annual budget. Pastors may endorse candidates in their capacity as private citizens and may even allow their title to be used in that endorsement. The fact that a pastor is an employee of a church no way removes his right to free speech as a citizen of the United States. Pastors may participate fully in political committees that are independent of the church. What A Church MAY NOT DO Legally: A pastor may not endorse candidates on behalf of the church. A pastor should not directly or indirectly endorse a candidate from the pulpit or otherwise in a church meeting. Contribute funds or services (such as mailing lists or office equipment) directly to candidates or political committees. Allow the distribution of material that favors any one candidate or political party. Pay fees for political events from church funds. Set up a political committee that would contribute funds directly to political candidates. No candidate should be allowed to solicit funds. Please note that the list of things that CAN be done in a place of worship is much longer than what cannot be done. The important thing is that churches don t avoid all political activity simply because some of it is prohibited Ask yourself If churches and people of faith don t stand up and speak out for their values, then who will?? Prohibit special interests from buying an amendment to our Constitution that creates permanent preferential tax rates or commercial rights for themselves or for any business. Prohibit special interests from amending our Constitution to guarantee financial profits for themselves or get special economic privileges that are not available to other similarly situated persons or entities. Uphold the traditional spirit and traditional meaning of free commerce, fair trade and fair dealing in Ohio. Why Ohio Needs Issue 2: The Constitution should be used to protect fundamental rights of all individuals, not to guarantee financial profits for a select few. Issue 3- Vote NO Issue 3 cements in the Constitution a billion-dollar marijuana monopoly for a small group of wealthy investors. Issue 3 gives them exclusive rights to commercial marijuana profits in Ohio, and insulates them from any business competition or act of the legislature. The investors who wrote Issue 3 set their own preferential tax rates directly into the Constitution rates that cannot be changed by the Legislature like those on beer, wine, and tobacco. Issue 3 puts our children at risk. Issue 3 legalizes marijuana-infused products like candy and cookies, which often have dangerously high levels of THC, and are highly tempting to children, including very young children. High limits on personal possession of marijuana will result in broad exposure of our children and underage high school and college students to marijuana. Issue 3 will flood Ohio with marijuana. Proponents imply that Issue 3 allows small amounts of marijuana for recreational use. In reality, it allows every adult 21 or over in the state the right to possess as much as 9 ounces (more than half a pound) of marijuana, or about 500 average-sized marijuana joints. In addition, every adult could possess four flowering marijuana plants at home. Issue 3 allows 1,159 retail marijuana stores that is more locations than Starbucks or McDonalds,and nearly three times the number of state liquor stores. Republican and Democrat elected officials, health advocates for children, hospitals, doctors, addiction counselors, faith leaders, mental health professionals, parents, educators, law enforcement officials,farmers, chambers of commerce and leading business groups all urge a NO vote on Issue 3. Issue 22 - Vote YES Your Yes Vote on Issue 22 Will: Ensure the districts are developed by a bi-partisan commission, not partisan county council members. Provide better representation for Summit County: Three members will represent Akron, not six. One member will represent Cuyahoga Falls, not four. One member will represent Bath, not two. Make sure that only one Akron ward is split. Currently, 9 of the 10 Akron wards are split between County Council Districts. Provide a better representation of districts reflecting the communities which they serve. Protect townships from being split between Council districts.
