5 List of participants Tarik Abouchadi is assistant professor at the department of political science at the University of Zurich. He obtained his PhD at the chair of comparative politics at Humboldt University Berlin. His current research focuses on electoral competition as a determinant of change and persistence in advanced democracies. Thorben Albrecht is Federal managing director of the German SPD he was Permanent State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. Before, he had been head of the office of Andrea Nahles in the SPD party executive in Berlin. Enzo Amendola has been Italian Member of Parliament from for Partito Democratico, elected in Campania. He was Secretary of State in the Ministry for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation from He has been vicepresident of IUSY and for many years in charge of PD s international relations. Michael Braun is research director at the FES office in Rome and journalist. He writes regularly for the German daily Taz and the Italian weekly Internazionale. Lorenzo De Sio is a professor at LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome. He obtained his PhD at the University of Florence and was bestowed the Best Under 40 Political Science Book Award in His fields of interest include electoral behavior in Italy and party competition. He was a research fellow at Science Po in Paris, at the University of California in Irvine and at Stanford University. Thorsten Faas is professor in the field of "Political Sociology of the Federal Republic of Germany" at the Free University Berlin. In his research, he focuses on elections, election campaigns and electoral studies. In 2011, he was awarded the Prize of the German Association for Political Science for his PhD thesis. Maciej Gdula is a professor at Warsaw University, where he also obtained his PhD in sociology and did his habilitation. His research interests lie in Polish electoral behavior and the Polish class system. Besides, he is an editor at the leftwing magazine Krytyka Polityczna, which focuses on politics and current affairs. David Goodhart is a British journalist and author. In 1995, he founded the monthly magazine Prospect. He also wrote for Financial Times, The Guardian and The Times. His latest book The Road to Somewhere: The Populist Revolt and the Future of Politics deals with ideological fault lines in the British society. He was director of Demos UK and is currently Head of the Demography, Immigration and Integration Unit at Policy Exchange. Edgar Grande is professor for comparative politics at LMU München and the founding director of the Center for Civil Society Research at the Berlin Social Science Center. He obtained his PhD and did his habilitation at University of Konstanz. He is the editor of various academic journals and anthologies, such as German Policy Studies or Sustainable Development in the 21 st century. 5

6 Ernst Hillebrand is head of the Warsaw office of FriedrichEbertStiftung. After postings in Africa and Latin America he has lead the FES offices in Rome, Paris and London. He is a political scientist by training. Hanspeter Kriesi is the holder of the Stein Rokkan Chair and professor at the department of Political Science at the European University Institute. His main research interests lie in comparative politics, political sociology and electoral behavior. He has been professor at the Universities of Amsterdam, Geneva, Zurich and others. Maria Maltschnig is director of the Renner Institut, the political academy of the Social Democratic Party of Austria. Before, she was appointed as specialist in Capital Markets, Economic Policy and European and International Affairs in the Vienna Chamber of Labour. Beate Martin is interim director of the Rome office of FES. She has large working experiences as FESrepresentative in Asia, Africa, Latin America and SouthEastern Europe. Wolfgang Merkel is a professor at HumboldtUniversität Berlin and the director of the research unit Democracy and Democratization at Berlin Social Science Center. He frequently publishes in prestigious German media and took up consulting activities for the Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero or for Kurt Beck, former prime minister of the German state of RheinlandPfalz. Attila Mesterházy is a Hungarian Member of Parliament, who served as the seventh chairman of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) from 10 July 2010 to 29 May He was the party's candidate for the position of Prime Minister of Hungary in the 2010 and 2014 parliamentary elections. Isabelle This SaintJean is national secretary of the French Parti Socialiste for Environment, Energy and Biodiversity. She teaches economics at the University Paris XIII. She has formerly been national secretary for PS for higher education and research and regional councillor in the Ile de Franceregion. 6
