6 DEGREES ST. GALLEN THE WORK OF INCLUSION MAY 5, 2018 HSG EXECUTIVE CAMPUS #6DegreesSG
6 Degrees is presented by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) Powered by a passionate and committed national network, the ICC delivers programs and special projects that inspire Canadians to be inclusive, create opportunities to connect, and encourage active citizenship. The ICC is a national charity co-founded by The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson and John Ralston Saul. The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson Adrienne Clarkson arrived in Canada from Hong Kong as a refugee in 1942 and made the astonishing journey from penniless child to accomplished broadcaster, journalist, and distinguished public servant in a multifaceted lifetime. During Madame Clarkson s mandate as Governor General ( ), her energy, enthusiasm, and passion left an indelible mark on Canada s history. A best-selling author, a Privy Councillor, and a Companion of the Order of Canada, Madame Clarkson lives in Toronto. John Ralston Saul John Ralston Saul is an award winning essayist and novelist, considered Canada s leading public intellectual, and his fourteen works have been translated into twenty-eight languages in thirty-seven countries. He has been declared a prophet by TIME magazine and is included in the Utne Reader s list of the world s 100 leading thinkers and visionaries. Saul is co-chair of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship and 6 Degrees Citizen Space, the annual global forum on citizenship and immigration. ICC Board of Directors: Martin Katz, Secretary Upkar Arora Winston S. L. Kassim Lesley Kim Ruth Ramsden-Wood Irfhan Rawji Khalil Shariff Niigaan Sinclair Andreas Souvaliotis
6 DEGREES 6 Degrees drives a global conversation on citizenship and inclusion. The Canadian initiative includes an immersive annual threeday event in Toronto, as well as a series of one-day pop-ups across Canada and around the world. 6 Degrees is about connection, conversation, artistic representation, and the power that comes from bringing people together. It counters rising nativism and exclusion, and instead, invites everyone to find a place in our circle. THE WORK OF INCLUSION The perspective is increasingly common: immigrants are a negative drain on economies and societies. It s also untrue. Newcomers are innovators, taxpayers, entrepreneurs, and employers. They make vital contributions to the communities where they live and work but only if they are welcomed and supported. With the world of work changing around us, how can diversity and inclusion be bulwarks against social unrest and anxiety, and cornerstones for successful economies and societies? SCHEDULE HSG Executive Campus Weiterbildungszentrum Holzweid Holzstrasse 15 Ch-9010 St. Gallen 9:00 Registration and Breakfast 9:45 Welcome (360 Stage) 10:00 11:00 Exchanges: Coffeehouse (Exchange Room) Our Stories, Our Citizens (360 Stage) 11:00 11:15 Break 11:15 12:30 360: Economies (360 Stage) 12:30 13:30 Lunch 13:30 15:00 360: Societies (360 Stage) 15:00 15:45 What s Next? 4 EXCHANGES 10:00 Coffeehouse For centuries, coffeehouses have been meeting spots for lively debates about current events, politics, art, and culture. Aiming to come up with key observations that can help inform the 360 sessions, these roundtable discussions will address some of the most pressing concerns around embracing diversity, and building resilient societies. with Charlie Foran CEO, Institute for Canadian Citizenship Our Stories, Our Citizens Everyone has an arrival story. We settle in new cities and countries; we relocate to new continents. Some of us have made the journeys quite recently, others generations ago. These stories inform how we think about ourselves as individuals, members of communities, and citizens. Sharing our stories means sharing world-views and philosophies, ideas born out of direct experiences, and values rooted in our lives. with Adrienne Clarkson 26 th Governor General of Canada and Co-Chair, Institute for Canadian Citizenship Upkar Arora CEO, Purpose Capital Zabeen Hirji Global Advisor, Future of Work, Deloitte; governmental advisor on diversity and inclusion; former Chief HR Officer, Royal Bank of Canada
Zabeen Hirji Global Advisor, Future of Work, Deloitte; governmental advisor on diversity and inclusion; former Chief HR Officer, Royal Bank of Canada 360: ECONOMIES 11:15 What is the economic case for immigration? To many, it s clear that prosperity and innovation are fuelled by the diversity and energy of newcomers. To others, mass movements of people across the globe are disrupting economies and straining goodwill. What is the relationship between inclusion, belonging, and work? How do we discuss and promote inclusive economies, while acknowledging the complexities of citizenship? host Scott Young Director, Ideas & Insights, Institute for Canadian Citizenship John Ralston Saul Essayist and novelist and Co-Chair, Institute for Canadian Citizenship Yulkendy Valdez Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Project 99 Inc. Peter Voser Chairman, ABB Ltd. and Chairman, St. Gallen Foundation for International Studies
Aya Chebbi Founder and Chair, Afrika Youth Movement 360: SOCIETIES 13:30 Diversity is a reality. Inclusion is a choice. It s more than a motto. It s a deliberate strategy to create mechanisms that nurture communities and build resilient, inclusive societies. How do we develop these mechanisms? What must we learn from each other? What language and thinking are essential to our collective success? host Charlie Foran CEO, Institute for Canadian Citizenship Adrienne Clarkson 26 th Governor General of Canada and Co-Chair, Institute for Canadian Citizenship Alexander Dirksen Director of Strategy and Engagement, First Nations Technology Council Hadeel Ibrahim Founding ED, Mo Ibrahim Foundation and Co-Chair, Africa Center
WHAT S NEXT? 15:00 For our final session, we endeavour to bring forward key conversations and outcomes from today s discussions. Calling on any and all in attendance, we open the circle: everyone is a participant, all voices are equal. Together, we frame what we ve discovered as a group, and decide what the next steps should be. host Martin Katz President, Prospero Pictures and Chair, Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television
