Dallas Zoo keeps about $200,000 worth of anti-venom in a small refrigerator In the zoo s 127-year history, handlers have been bitten only three times. All of the bites were dry bites, meaning no venom was injected. The zoo carries many antivenoms for exotic snakes. 8 Persian Corals Offer New Hope Scientists have found corals in the Persian Gulf reefs that can tolerate water temperatures as high as 36 degrees C - warmer than the highest predictions for the next century. John Burt, a marine biologist at New York University, says the Persian Gulf corals "offer hope." He thinks their genetics could help other corals survive warmer temperatures. Critics say it is foolish to think that any one element of a complex coral community will provide a perfect solution.
9 Cuba Taken Off Of Terror Support List President Barack Obama will remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. In his notification to Congress, Obama stated that "The government of Cuba has not provided any support for international terrorism during the last six months." While still in conflict with many American ideals, Cuba does not meet the requirements to be kept on the list of states sponsoring terrorism

16 National In North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, the U.S. s leading tobacco-growing states, children as young as seven legally participate in the harvesting of nicotine- and pesticide-laced tobacco leaves in more hazardous conditions than children in any other industry face. Child laborers lack protective gear and are exposed to pesticides. Children experience headaches, nausea, and vomiting while working on tobacco farms. Children working on farms, hence, widely suffer from Green Tobacco Sickness, a type of nicotine poisoning caused by the absorption of nicotine through the skin while handling tobacco plants. U.S. agriculture labor laws permit long hours for young children; with parental consent, children as young as twelve are able to work limitlessly on a farm of any size outside of school hours; small farms have no minimum age for child laborers. Children in America work long hours harvesting tobacco and many get sick By Associated Press, adapted by Newsela staff and Children legally harvest tobacco under dangerous conditions in some states.
17 International On Nov. 20, 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand, three students were detained by police for using the Mockingjay salute in public at the opening of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and taken to an army camp, where the colonel says they will undergo an attitude adjustment. Five other Thai students were later arrested for using the Mockingjay gesture during a speech by Prayuth. Since May 22, when then-army leader Prayuth Chan-Ocha overthrew elected leaders, assemblies of five or more people have been illegalized; at this time, democracy was suspended in Thailand. The Prime Minister was driven out. Fiction is used to protest reality: Orwell s 1984 and the Mockingjay hand gesture are embraced as symbols of rebellion against oppressive leaders. The salute has been banned in practice in Thailand by the army. A UN human rights official argues that the ban violates human rights by shutting down dissenters. Prayuth announced that martial law will continue until the right time to lift it has been reached. In China, Mockingjay s release has been delayed, possibly because of protestors in Hong Kong fighting for democracy. "Hunger Games" salute leads to arrests of Thai protesters By Carol J. Williams, Los Angeles Times Effects of on The three-finger gesture has been adopted by Thai protestors.

20 Obama talks about climate change as he tours endangered Everglades President Barack Obama on Wednesday paid his first visit to the Everglades to deliver an Earth Day speech. He spoke about the threat of rising seas at the endangered national park and the risk of climate change across the nation. Obama said he could think of no better place to spend Earth Day than the River of Grass, as the Everglades is called. He praised the virtues of the Everglades, remarking that it provides a habitat for both alligators and crocodiles. This is not an effort necessarily to go to anybody s home state, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Tuesday. The truth is those Republicans that choose to deny the reality of climate change, they do that to the detriment of the people that they re elected to represent, Earnest said. President Barack Obama walks with park rangers on the Anhinga Trail at Everglades National Park, Florida, on Earth Day, April 22, 2015.

It is here that party leaders oversee China s 24- hour control of the Internet and run a content-blocking operation that critics call the Great Firewall. Some 5,900 miles away, in a cottage in Berkeley, California, the staff of China Digital Times tries to poke holes in the Great Firewall. Every day, they collect, translate and publish many of the official requests for censorship the party sends to state media. Such requests are known as censorship directives Xiao founded China Digital Times in Since then, it has become a go-to site for English speakers wanting to keep up with China s Internet and its 640 million users.
