1 Common Grounds Communitarian experiences InfoPack Description and objectives: The project Common Grounds - Communitarian experiences to learn and spread intercultural competences was inspired by several analysis that in the last years proofed how formal education is not able to provide youngsters with tools in order to develop competences related to emotional expression and relational capacities. Several reports highlighted how education to democratic resilience or to intercultural competences would be fundamental to face contemporary society. The project proposes a learning path with the development of EVS "community based" activities. Communitarian experiences are fundamental learning opportunities to develop social, emotional, intercultural and civic competences that youngsters are missing nowadays. The project wants to involve the volunteers in diverse communities (rural, intercultural, urban, traditional, marginal) to implement a development and growth path both for the volunteers and for the communities, enhancing the feeling of belonging and the welcoming skills. The volunteer will be actively involved in a growth experience where he/she will achieve diverse competences (key, transversal and specific competences and the communities will re-discover their educational, welcoming and inspiring potential. The project involves three EU countries (Spain, France and Italy) and non EU countries from diverse geographical areas (Serbia and Kosovo - Balkans, Georgia - Caucasus, Turkey). This partnership will allow a dialogue between diverse national and cultural identities and contexts where the culture, religion, ethnic cohabitation is a continuous challenge. 1

2 Placements: The project hosts 6 volunteers (youngsters from 18 to 30 years old) in four placements: - Agape Ecumenical Centre will host a Georgian volunteer - Radio Beckwith Evangelica will host a French and a Spanish volunteer - Il Passo Social Point (CSD) will host a Kosovarian and a Turkish volunteer - Migrant Service (CSD) will host a Serbian volunteer Agape Ecumenical Centre, is an international youth and ecumenical center, a place of exchange and meeting between diversities, located in the small village of Prali (Turin). It is located in the Italian Alps at 1600 of high surrounded by a great nature. The centre was born from the idea of reconciliation between populations after the second war world. The centre promote community life, volunteering, exchange and dialogue. It organizes several camps for children and adult mainly during the summer season but also during winter holydays. For the rest of the year it hosts groups who wants to spend some time in the nature in a place that offers a sustainable and simple lifestyle in a community environment. The place is managed by a group of around 10 international volunteers that live here for at least one year. website: facebook: Agape Centro Ecumenico 2

3 Radio Beckwith Evangelica, is a local media channel for an inter-cultural and plural communication of local contexts, located in the small village of Luserna San Giovanni (Turin). The Radio deals with many different topics with a specific focus and attention to the local communities and events. It is located in a building called Villa Olanda that hosts also other services for local youngsters and for the refugees and asylum seekers. The volunteers will help the workers to develop Radio programme and to report on local events. Eventually they will create and lead their own programme. website: facebook: Radio Beckwith Evangelica Il Passo Social Point, is a social centre, located in Turin, in a poor and difficult neighborhood of the city where is a high percentage of migrants. This placement is a diurnal centre that offer many types of activities for the local community. It has both services addressed to young people than to migrants. The centre also host external groups wishing to organize events for the local community to foster the construction of a multicultural society. 4 Migrant Service is a service located in Luserna San Giovanni, a small village near Turin. The service is located in Villa Olanda, a old villa where Diaconia Valdese develop many activities both for refugees than for youngsters. In the centre Villa Olanda are living some refugees: this is the biggest hosting centre, otherwise refugees are usually hosted in small apartments to let them better be integrated in the local communities. The centre offers different workshops, such as sewing, cooking, music workshops or to learn how to repair bicycle or how to use computer. The service propose educational paths in the local schools to raise awareness between young people about the phenomenon of migration. Many events are also organized at local level to foster integration and inclusion. facebook: Servizio Richiedenti Asilo e Rifugiati - Diaconia Valdese Activities: Volunteers will be welcomed in placements which have a strong connection with the communitarian contexts where they are settled in and which organizes their activities in relation with the local dimension: - volunteers at Agape Ecumenical Centre will be involved in a communitarian life and working path and will support the management and organization of the placement activities: seminars, camps and thematic workshops for diverse target groups and on different topics (education, politics, volunteering, interculturality) - volunteers at Radio Beckwith Evangelica will support the Radio in the work of representing all the diverse aspects of the local communities. They will help in the programs creation, in the communication of local events and in the involvement of the population in activities to promote local environment 4

5 - volunteers at CSD (Migrant Service and Il Passo Social Point) will support the placements in the management of integration and welcoming paths for migrants in communitarian contexts, rural and urban ones. They will help in the organization of leisure activities, meeting and dialogue for the local population. Diaconia Valdese as coordinating organization will offer the volunteers 3 seminars: On-Arrival Seminar in September/October 2018 Mid-Term Seminar at the beginning of February 2019 in Florence a Final Seminar at the end of May/beginning of June 2019 in Palermo and in Luserna San Giovanni Furthermore the volunteers will attend 2 more seminars organized from the Italian National Agency. Logistics: DURATION: The project will last 12 months: - For Il Passo Social Point and Migrant Service from the 2 nd of September 2018 until the the 31 st of August For Agape Ecumenical Centre from the 15 th of September 2018 to the 14 th of September For Radio RBE from the 1 st of October 2018 to the 30 th of September 2019 TRAVEL: The volunteers are asked to pay their own travel ticket. They will be reimbursed at the end of the service upon the delivery of all original tickets and boarding pass of their journey. Following are the maximum amount of reimbursement foreseen for the travel for each participating country: 5

6 - Serbia, Kosovo, Spain: 275,00 euro - France: 180,00 euro - Turkey and Georgia: 360,00 euro VISA: There is a budget of 400,00 to cover the visa expenses for participants from Serbia, Kosovo, Georgia and Turkey. The participants have to keep all the invoices and tickets to give proof of the expenses. The volunteers will be reimbursed of these expenses at their arrival in Italy. POCKET MONEY: The volunteers will receive 120,00/124,00 euro of pocket money, at the beginning of every month (4 euro per day) FOOD, ACCOMMODATION, TRANSPORTS: The volunteers hosted in Agape Ecumenical Centre will stay in a big house with other volunteers coming from Italy and other different countries. They will have their private room, they will share all common spaces (kitchen, living room, bathrooms). The house is equipped with all necessary furniture (also towels and sheets for beds). The food allowance is provided by the placement. The house is next to the placement so there is no need of transportations for the volunteers. The volunteers making service at Radio Beckwith Evangelica, Migrant Service and Il Passo Social point will stay in houses with other 2/3 volunteers, from other countries. They will have a shared bedroom (with maximum one other volunteer) and they will share the common spaces (kitchen, living room, bathroom). All houses are equipped with all necessary furniture (also towels and sheets for beds). The volunteers will receive 150,00 euro every month for the food expenses. From the apartments it is possible to reach the placement by feet. 6 6

7 LANGUAGE COURSE: The volunteers will have the access to the Online Linguistic Support that will help them in learning the Italian language. It is highly recommend to start using this tool as soon as it will be activated by the coordinating organization. Furthermore they will attend an intensive Italian course during the On-Arrival Seminar. They will also attend Italian lessons, once in a week, for the first months of their service. INSURANCE: The volunteers will insured with Cigna insurance by their sending organization. Impact and results: Volunteers will cooperate in the creation of a weekly Radio program about 9 specific topics to be faced from the perspective of the practical coexistence in intercultural and diverse communities. The topic can be defined by the volunteers themselves, with the support of the coordinating and hosting organizations. At the end of the project the volunteers will produce a recommendations/guidelines document in order to give suggestions how to deal concrete and logistic aspects of coexistence in the today's communities, relating to the same topics discussed during the year in the radio program. The volunteers will organize two final events: - one during the Protestant Churches Synod, that takes place every year at the end of August in Torre Pellice - one at Il Passo Social Point in Turin. During these events the volunteers will share the project results to the involved local communities. The events will be transmitted in Facebook live and all partner organizations and stakeholders will be invited to follow. 7

8 The volunteers will develop skills connected with emotional education and democratic resilience: open-mindedness, emotional flexibility and social variety. Volunteers will experiment an integral growth and development path that will enable them to became more self conscious, developing their sense of belonging and responsibility toward the hosting community and consequently toward the origin communities, as well as the welcoming skill and the appreciation of diversity. Communities will increase their ability to welcome and train the younger generations. Good practices of the project will be held in the hosting organizations and will be shared in the sending organizations. The project will be a good example of innovative learning path for emotional and community learning. COORDINATING ORGANISATION: : is a no-profit organization belonging to the Waldensian church, the protestant minority in Italy. The organization itself is laical, everyone can benefit from its services regardless to which is the religious, political, cultural, sexual belonging. The organization coordinates many services at a national level addressed to people in situation of need, such as disabled, elderly people, minors and youngsters, adult with fewer opportunities, refugees and asylum seekers.
