The Pull and Push of Amenity Migration BCPARF 2011 Joe Pavelka PhD Mount Royal University

Outline Context of amenity migration The pull of amenity migration The push of amenity migration So what does this mean?

Amenity Migration Migration to and for places of extra-ordinary physical, cultural and recreational amenities.

Amenity Migration and Economic Migration

Who is the Amenity Migrant 1. Seeking a mountain-recreation-lifestyle and rely on the place for a livelihood and make it work through sacrificing of career, home ownership, work life. 2. Seeking a mountain-recreation-lifestyle and rely on the place for a livelihood and can not make it work as concerns of cost of living, home ownership, career, and education result in leaving the place for a larger or smaller centre. 3. Seek a career and/or a mountain-recreation-lifestyle, have found careers compatible with the place and live relatively normal lives (children play hockey etc.) and stay 4. Seeking hospitality careers (not senior positions) and strong social needs, not interested in a mountain-recreation-lifestyle i.e. the vampires and they stay 5. Second home owners, retirees or residents who commute to work elsewhere and thereby do not rely on the place for a livelihood who can make it work and stay.

Conceptualizing Push/Pull Factors The unmooring of identities in modern life We do not connect with a typical home The way we work, play and interact involves multiple geographies (Williams and McIntyre, 2008)

Push and Pull Push Can come before pull Feeling that to gain one must go elsewhere Ego-enhancement Pull Strong role for advertising and word of mouth The ideal, dream destination, cache (Dann 1976, 1981)

Push and Pull

Cohen s Tourist Typology 1. Recreational 2. Diversionary 3. Experiential 4. Experimental 5. Existential Alienation and Authenticity Greater the sense of personal alienation the more intensive will be the search for authenticity (Wylie, 2000)

Overview of Research

Typical Amenity Migrants Lifestyle Escape Identity Reinvention Authenticity

The Second Home Owner Solitude and escape Nostalgia and family time Ability to share with friends A lifestyle and some reinvention No demands on time complete separation of work and free time No expectations of being a part of the community A legacy for children

Second Home Owner On a regular basis I go there and said I can sit in my house in Canmore and never move. I d be quite happy to do that. And that s the solitude thing, whereas at home, I could never do that. If I envisioned myself to wake up on a Saturday morning and never leave my house in Calgary I d go nuts. In Canmore I m quite happy.

Typical Pull Features of Mountain Communities 1.) Access to mountain recreation activities and the mountains 2.) Access to a like-minded community(s) 3.) Access to a small town community 4.) A unique setting (mountain community) Lifestyle is a reoccurring theme you may be a doctor but can you climb 5.10?

What do we know about Lifestyle? a.) Access to recreation and culture culture is as important but recreation is the draw b.) Motivation to reside (pull) is used as a measure to determine what social group one will fit into c.) The social group reinforcement of identity, status and social position, place re-recreation, and as a determinant of tenure d.) The job is important ideally it would be seamlessly integrated into leisure e.) Counter-culture define in opposition to f.) Never-never land an antidote to everyday life

Lifestyle Coming out to the mountains I was 18 and I just wanted to get away from Saskatchewan and do something else and adventure for the summer but I kind of just fell in love with the place and I kept trying to leave and I couldn t find any atmosphere that had recreation opportunities like this and diversity of people with progressive thinking and different thinking. People plan their life around working for 8 months and traveling for 4. Never seen that before. Not in Saskatchewan at least. So that really hooked me, how people would plan for their leisure time or their lifestyle. More so they d plan for the lifestyle. So I kept trying to leave and I kept coming back. (RS.08)

The Environment I m a person who my environment is very important to my way of life I have to be in a place that is aesthetically beautiful. I was raised in a lakes and a forested area. So I ve just, I ve grown up in that environment. (LM.4)

Seamlessly Integration I find living in the Bow Valley you are able to integrate leisure and recreation into small parts of one s day, rather than kind of just wanting to do it on a weekend or in the evenings. It s all part of the experience (BM) I love it here. When I came here, I climbed a lot, skied every chance I had. Now I have a job where I ll go out to Lake Louise, ski up the road, go do my technical work...(cw)

Push Opposite of Pull? Opposite of Pull (in some cases) Little access to their recreation Little access to their social community Not living in a small town community Not living in a place they see as unique

Push Counter Culture Challenging notions of the American Dream (Hoey, 2005) Alienation to authenticity (unmooring of identity) (Image: Globe & Mail 11/08/11)

Entitlement

So what are the practical implications? Represent places for identity and lifestyle reinvention that space is contested As stress (alienation) in urban settings increases we can expect greater search for identity in unique settings with potential for re-shaping We can expect greater emphasis on destination branding places will need to cater to specific groups
