1 Text File NRE Household Interview 2001 Site Person Interview # Question 53 Question Hope or diversification of the economy: want the town to grow. Mackenzie needs more tourism. The town needs more leadership for direction/guidance. The town needs to bring in more business and needs better health care Hope for stable employment, better medical care, and increased quality education Hope for Mackenzie to increase its retention of employees. It also needs better health care. Also hope for improved education from grade 10 and beyond Hope for growth and better access to retail stores in Mackenzie Hope that Mackenzie grows and diversifies its economy. Better medical services need to be made available in town, so residents do not have to travel to Prince George. Local businesses need to be competitive with regional businesses Hope to diversify Mackenzies industrial base and become more self sufficient. For example, use wood waste from the mills as fuel for the mills and promote tourism Hope for the initiation and expansion of agricultural interests and endeavors. Mackenzie needs to diversity and stabilize its economy Hope for Economic growth because it leads to stability. Teenagers need to stay in Mackenzie and have pride in their community. There is not enough moral/community support from the mills. Need another industry in town. Need an in-and-out road because we are at a dead-end. Need to bring in more tourists. Need to get younger, different people on Council that listen to people. Should attempt not to be reliant on forestry. Need more recognition from Federal and Provincial governments. We want our Northern Living Allowance back. Need to achieve better tourism and industry. Need a better hospital, more doctors, and more dentists. And improved services so we don=t have to go to Prince George. Also, need better social services with the Ministry and workers. We want our Northern Living Allowance back. Should focus more on tourism, in both summer and winter. This would bring more businesses, which would lead to growth. We need to look after the elderly. For example, we need housing for seniors. Should attempt to attract more people. Expand business wise. We need younger people on Council and we need the Northern Living Allowance back. We need to diversify the economy by promoting tourism. Need better medical facilities. Should try and get a road through town. Need to attract more out-of-towners. Bring in tourism by providing more shopping opportunities.

4 Hope that Mackenzie will continue, but not as is. It needs to diversify and grow Hope that Mackenzie gets recognition for being a vital part of the Provincial economy. Good workers will put up with a lot if they are making money. Without decent work, the town will dry up. Mackenzie needs to diversify the economy. Need more permanent doctors and to diversify the economy (i.e., tourism and hunting) Hope Mackenzie grows so the people who come here can stay. Like to see business prosper and professionals stay in town Hope more businesses startup. Hope the Softwood Lumber Agreement goes well Hope to see sustainable employment and economy. And improved medical services Hope that the forest industry stays healthy and becomes stable. Hope the medical situation will improve. Improve schooling for kids Hope to get a secondary industry and that businesses expand and thrive. Also hope the population grows by about 1,000 people. Should attempt to open up more land for development. Should encourage people to sta y in the community. Should improve schools by recruiting better professionals. Need to improve medical care. 9 Hope that the forest industry stays strong and that the economy improves. Hope Mackenzie doesn=t get much bigger Hope the global market improves because Mackenzie relies on the forest industry, which is dependant on the world economy. Should focus on more finished wood products Hope to see secondary manufacturing in the forest sector. Also hope the existing sector expands to increase employment. Should expand tourism. Should attempt economic growth. Should find something that will keep teems out of trouble. We need to do something about the high school. Should get a bit more diversified. Economy should go to finished products, as this would make it more stable. Should promote Mackenzie to young families because it can provide safety, security, and a good environmental advantage. Should expand tourism. Should get some benefits from the resources that we develop because most goes out of the community Hope Mackenzie prospers and continues to exist. Also, should attempt to get recognition from the government Hope Mackenzie grows and thrives. Should attempt to improve health care, improve economic stability, and improve services so the people won=t leave. Should promote tourism (i.e., winter sports, et cetera). Should get community involved as a whole. Also, need to attract more businesses. Should get secondary industry. For example, a Federal or Provincial jail just out of town Hope for another industry and diversification. Should be more attractive to businesses and tourism. We should improve how we sell ourselves Hope for a strong economic base and solid work. Also hope Mackenzie doesn=t get too much bigger. Also, should put a road to Powder King. Hope that we have alternate resources. Also, to work together to keep itself sustained. For example, post-secondary Hope to see northern communities have better facilities for seniors, so they can enjoy the winter months. Should attempt to have more jobs created and get more activities for children and teens. Should attempt to achieve solidarity and vision on where Mackenzie is going. Should try to achieve a business goal to help out private enterprise. Should attempt to achieve economic stability (i.e., second industry and tourism). Also should try and get Northern Living Allowance back. Should attempt diversification of industry and economy.

11 Hope that Mackenzie will be good for children to grow up in, and that it doesn=t dwindle Hope for second industry. Also that Mackenzie people support the local community (i.e., could have a music festival, a rodeo, a beauty pageant, a winter carnival, and parades). Should be trying to approach government with promotion. Should attempt to combat the drug problem. Should get second industry and better medical care. Should get increased shopping selection and a community hall Hope that the economy stabilizes. Should get resources for teenagers (i.e., improve high school and get stuff for them to do) Hope that Mackenzie stays economically viable. Should bring in more industry to create more jobs. Should promote themselves more. Should achieve growth by new industry or tourism. Should achieve diversification. Should have diversification of recreation (i.e., more hiking, hunting, and back country).
