1 2016 Year 8 Global Outlook Week Visit Information Sheet Destination Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham, Cambodia Visit Leader: Mr Ed Wawn - ewawn@kellettschool.com Visit Administrator: Ms Vivian Wong - vivianwong@kellettschool.com Group 1: (Bowen and Clementi) Group 2: (MacLehose and Youde) Dates and Transport (see Appendix 1 for further detailed information) Depart Hong Kong: Saturday 8 October Arrive back in Hong Kong: Thursday 13 October Length of Visit 5 nights / 6 days Student Participation All students are required to attend. This is a mandatory visit.

2 Meeting Arrangements All students are to meet their Teachers at Hong Kong International Airport, Terminal 1, aisle H as follows: Group 1 (Bowen and Clementi) hrs (5:45am) Group 2 (MacLehose and Youde) hrs (12:50pm) Description and Purpose This focus of this visit is: To understand Cambodian culture To understand Cambodian history particularly the atrocities of the genocide To understand why there is a shortage of leaders and educators in Cambodia as a result of the genocide. To understand why a missing generation has resulted in such community need and to better comprehend the importance of giving back To have students give back to some of the most needy in the community through active service. In October we are travelling to Cambodia where we will undertake a life changing visit. Landing in Phnom Penh, we will spend some time exploring the largest and capital city of Cambodia. The students will be introduced to Cambodia and the Khmer culture, including a short introduction to the language and a briefing on traditions, religion and etiquette. Whilst in Phnom Penh the students will visit the Grand Palace and the Silver Pagoda, the current home of the King and Queen of Cambodia. Students will also spend some time in Phnom Penh focusing on the recent genocide and the Khmer Rouge. The students will have covered this in school prior to the trip, and will be well prepared for a visit to S21. Local guides will provide the students with invaluable insight into the hardships that the local people had to endure. This experience will no doubt bring to life the realities of very recent history. After spending time in Phnom Penh, all students will travel together to Kampong Cham for the service element of their trip. As well as being home to the beautiful Watt Nokor (a temple older than those seen at Angor Watt), Kampong Cham is a community in need of help and support. It is slightly off the beaten track and therefore provides an opportunity for our students to experience a part of Cambodia that they may not otherwise visit. It is here where they will be giving back through carrying out some very rewarding community service. Our local contact group in Kampong Cham will be the BSDA (Buddhism for Social Development and Action). They have been working closely with the community in Kampong Cham for over ten years and are a charity with whom Rustic Pathways partner. They offer training and daycare to children of all ages and have done some amazing work with the local community. We are very privileged to be able to work with them and to provide them with our helping hands. Prior to the trip the students will be split into groups and will be allocated an appropriate job for their days of service. The jobs will cover a wide range of activities including painting the Happy Happy drop in centre (a day care for young children), helping further develop the grounds of the orphanage and repairing houses for some of the neediest in the community. After three nights in Kampong Cham we will all return to Phnom Penh, and as a reward for their hard work in the service the end they will visit a local not-for-profit restaurant to try the local cuisine, and will enjoy a sunset cruise down the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. Whilst in Cambodia, a very special and unique country, we aim to take full advantage of the incredible surroundings and the kind people and give the students a very memorable experience.

11 Appendix 3 Packing List Carry-On Luggage A small backpack is the best carry-on bag and will be useful on your program day-trips. Make sure everything you pack in your carry-on complies with the new carry-on regulations of the TSA. Passport Travel Wallet (that can be hidden under clothing) Photocopy of Passport (place in checked luggage) Sunglasses Journal and Pens A good book (which you can trade with buddies) Water bottle (refillable, durable, and empty) Medications (must alert staff) Camera (and a good case to keep your camera safe from elements like rain and dirt) Checked Luggage A medium-sized duffel bag or a large backpack is the most suitable bag. Wheeled bags are OK as long as they are medium sized and can easily be carried like a duffle over rough terrain. Airlines in Asia limit each checked bag to 15 kilos, so please pack accordingly. Clothing Items Standards of dress in Thailand are conservative. Short shorts, strappy tank-tops, and working shirtless are not acceptable for community service projects.
