4 Counterfeit Documents Most commonly seen Counterfeit Documents: Passports EU ID cards NI cards 7 Note the difference below in the Quality of the gold blocking. The Size of the document is also important. Machine readable passports should be 125mm by 88mm Counterfeit Documents Note the differing ultraviolet reactions 4

5 Watermarks On the left we can see a genuine watermark with tonal variation whereas on the right is a counterfeit watermark with hard edges Watermarks viewed in Ultraviolet Light On the left we have no sign of the watermark in ultraviolet light. In contrast on the right the chemically simulated counterfeit on the right is reacting in UV. 5

6 Intaglio Printing Genuine intaglio printing will have raised print which can be identified by touch. In contrast the counterfeit on the right has been simulated using an embossing process, which is also out of registration. Genuine intaglio print often includes a latent image which can Be seen when the area of intaglio is viewed at 90 degrees. 6

7 Print Quality Print quality is often a quick indicator of counterfeit documents. Commercial printing cannot produce the same quality as security printers Forged Documents Most commonly seen Forged Documents: Substituted Bio data page passports Passports containing forged Leave to Remain in the UK 14 7

8 Substituted Bio Data Pages Below is a chart of the only characters that should be used in the machine readable zone. It follows that the presence of any letters or numbers the font of which varies from that illustrated below indicates that the document may be a forgery or a counterfeit. Machine readable zone Each line of the MRZ in passports should contain 44 characters in total. OCR-B Text note particularly the flat top to the figure three and the open figure four N.B. Some countries have issued some passports with non OCR-B compliant fonts within the MRZ. Notable amongst these are some Austrian, French, Italian and Spanish passports. Please refer to local forgery detection teams if encountered. Substituted Bio Data pages Note the characters in the MRZ 16 8

9 UK Residence Permit Counterfeit UK Residence Permits are commonly seen in forged passports. The top border of the Residence Permit, (the blue printed area), should have raised intaglio printing which is absent in the counterfeits. Another main detection point is that when viewed in ultraviolet light the counterfeits do not have random red and blue coloured fibres. ILR Vignette Counterfeit UK Indefinite Leave to Remain vignettes (stickers) are also commonly seen in forged passports. The outer border of the vignette, (the green printed area), should have raised intaglio printing which is either absent or simulated with pin pricks in the counterfeits. Another main detection point is that when viewed in ultraviolet light the counterfeits do not have the correct ultraviolet features. 9
