4 Documents Are Relevant Documents are used for all forms of legal and illegal activity. Fraudulent documents are routinely used by criminals for illicit purposes. Documents may be altered or counterfeited, or may be genuine documents fraudulently obtained.

6 Questioned Documents Section Conduct forensic examinations to determine authenticity, authorship, and presence of alterations to documents Examinations include analyses of document security features, printing processes, papers, inks, stamps, handwriting (visible and invisible), typewriting, and shredded documents Provide expert witness testimony on examinations and findings Perform counterfeit deterrence studies of new and proposed travel and identity documents to recommend improvements in document security

10 OBLIQUE or SIDE LIGHT highlights contrasting heights of features in a document.
11 TRANSMITTED LIGHT helps identify embedded features and differences in thickness in a document.
12 MAGNIFICATION shows additional detail not visible to the naked eye.
13 ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT can help to identify different substances within an object without damaging it. This may include specialized inks or other materials in the document used as security features, or signs of chemicals used to alter or recreate security safeguards.

40 Document Training & Alerts Section Document intelligence alerts disseminate significant information about travel and identity documents to law enforcement and border control officials worldwide. Document reference guides provide extensive information on a specific program (DHS Visa Waiver Program), a particular topic of interest (Guide to Selected U.S. Travel and Identity Documents), or specific issues from a single country or region (Operation Coyote). HSI-FL document intelligence alerts and reference guides are available to DHS personnel on the HSI Forensic Laboratory pages on ICE InSight and HSINet.
