4 POPULATION OF MONT EAL INUIT Approximately 1,300-1,500 Inuit; Inuit work for Makivik, subsidiaries of other Nunavik Inuit organizations; 75o/o from Nunavik - 25 /o Nunavut; Approximately in vulnerable situation or homeless; Inuit represent 10 /o of Montreal Aboriginals but 45o/o of homeless Aboriginals; Continuous migration of Inuit to Montreal. 4

6 EMPLOYMENT Recognition that jobs are stepping stones to independence and financial stability and better adaptation to city life; lncrease number of employed Inuit; Take down barriers and stereotypes; Priority to Inuit youth; ldentify employment skills and opportunities; Programs to be developed by Inuit for Inuit; Active knowledge of lnuktitut is an asset; Offer Employee Assistance Program in lnuktitut; 6

7 Boost self-esteem and self-confidence; Create an Inuit social economy; Put in place pairing-mentoring internships; lvirtivik services to play a major raie; Introduction to urban culture before Inuit move down south; Create an Inuit Centre where community can gather. 7

8 CULTURE Strong sense of Inuit culture, identity, language shared by Inuit in Montreal; Celebrate Inuit culture; Educate media and general public about Inuit culture; Support to assist with cultural shock for those who are coming south; Sharing of country food; Ensure urban Inuit children including foster children are included in cultural incentives; 8

9 Teaching of lnuktitut, Inuit traditional values and customary practices; lnuktitut Radio Program in Montreal; Organization of Inuit cultural activities; Inuit leaders should be cultural leaders; Important role of Eiders; Avataq Cultural lnstitute and Kativik School Board have an important raie to play; Establishment of a Montreal Urban Inuit Cultural Centre. 9

10 HEALTH Food, shelter, mental and physical health should be addressed including support, crisis intervention, emergencies, suicide, violence and abuse; Address the needs of Inuit children; Address issue of access to identity cards; Special treatment for alcoholics, drug users; Transition and integration support for Inuit arriving in Montreal; Availability of temporary apartments; 10

11 Inuit living outside of Nunavik should be eligible for support services; Inuit living in Montreal should also benefit from services from Module Nord Québec; Establishment of interpretation services, transport, lodging; Establishment of outreach programs; Creation of Cooperative Cultural and Information Centre; Establishment of a day care. 11

12 JUSTIC Inuit specific full continuum of support with aim of improving Inuit well-being; Need to have Inuit support groups; Crime prevention programs; Support to Inuit coming out of detention centres; Gender-based programs; Educate justice system to Inuit culture; Training about Inuit for correctional staff; 12
