1 SO/CU 360 MULTICULTURAL BERLIN IES Abroad Berlin DESCRIPTION: Discussions on immigration and citizenship, cultural identities, and a national core culture have dominated public debates in Germany for years, while the number of immigrants due to labor migration and asylum continues to rise. Does Germany perceive itself as an immigrant society or just as the land for Germans? How much integration or assimilation do we need? How much tolerance or how much multiculturalism? What are the different political, social, and cultural perspectives on this debate? How do tensions around immigration and the status quo of the German model of a welfare state arise? We will examine Berlin as a key city for the history of migration after World War II and discuss various problems of a modern multicultural city and society. With the aid of field trips, we will delineate traces of different ethnic/cultural groups in Berlin and interpret the state of multiculturalism in the urban environment as well as processes of gentrification and social as well as ethnic segregation. CREDITS: 3 credits CONTACT HOURS: 45 credit hours LANGUAGE OF PRESENTATION: German ADDITIONAL COST: none PREREQUISITES: none METHOD OF PRESENTATION: Lectures Class discussions Student presentations Field trips Films Moodle with interactive tasks REQUIRED WORK AND FORM OF ASSESSMENT: Course participation 10 % Homework 20 % Midterm Exam - 20 % Final Exam - 20% Presentation 10 % Research Paper 20% Course Participation Students must complete the assigned readings, participate in class discussions, and attend all field trips.
