1 ONE ROOM SHELTER SUCCESS STORY VILLAGE JAMAL JAMALI UNION COUNCIL SIBI JADEED DISTRICT JAFFARABAD Innovative Development Organization Village Jamal Jamali is located in Union Council Sibi Jadeed at a distance of 40 Km from Usta Muhammad City in District Jaffarabad. Under the UNHCR s Construction of One Room Shelter project, Innovative Development Organization (IDO) constructed 42 shelters in the village. Floods 2010 caused great damage to this village. All the households in the village were affected and rendered very vulnerable. Before the flood, the people in this village lived in huts made of mud and straw and flood waters mercilessly brought down their houses. All the people in the village suffered forced displacement. On our visit to the village for documentation of the success story, we discovered that the life of people had returned to normalcy and all the inhabitants interviewed were very excited to have received a permanent shelter for their families. This document aims to present the views of some beneficiaries in the village at the completion of the project. Ajeeba Khatoon, 60, widow Ajeeba Khatoon expressed that the villagers and herself faced great problems after the flood. As a widow, her greatest worry was the vulnerability she faced after displacement when she and others remained under open sky for days. I lost all my livestock and I had no one to look up to, she told us, but now I am very relieved to have received a shelter where my son and I can happily live. Ajeeba Khatoon also thanked UNHCR and IDO for helping her out of inexplicable misery. She hopes that the village will also see other interventions such as in the sectors of WASH and health. He has a mother and his wife and children to look after. The loss of livestock and shelter which I suffered as a result of the flood made me dependent on others for food and shelter, he told us with his daughter in his arm, but the happiness I feel for receiving a permanent shelter has wiped all our tears and consoled our hearts. Photo: Rasool Bux s daughter poses for the camera as he shares his experiences Rasool Bux s mother also thanked UNHCR and IDO for standing by them in times of difficulty. 3 Khadim Ali, 62, married Khadim Ali lives in village Jamal Jamali with his wife and 2 daughters. Life for Khadim Hussain is now much relaxed and normal activities of tending to his livestock and taking lunch in the shade of his shelter have now resumed. The flood ruined everything I had worked so hard to gather. My weak shoulders and tender heart could not bear the losses we suffered. Only God can tell how I could survive the grief, he told us with chronicles of pain very evident from the wrinkles on his withered face. Khadim s wife Sauzo also expressed her feeling since the completion of their shelter. She thanked IDO, UNHCR and the People of Japan. Photo: Khadim Ali and his family Photo (Left): Khadim Ali feeding his cows and his shelter and family can be seen in the background Photo (Right): The visibility plate fixed on Khadim Ali s Shelter Photo (Left): Sauzo, Khadim Ali s wife, cooking in the newly constructed kitchen Photo (Right): Khadim Ali s daughters standing outside their new shelter
4 Community Participation in ORS Construction The community in village Jamal Jamali was always cooperative in the construction of shelters right from the stages of mobilization and excavation to completion of shelters. The community members worked very energetically as unskilled labor and supported the external skilled labors in all possible ways. It is because of the interest taken by the community that these shelters were constructed in very short a span of time and without any major constraints. All the community members deserve to be congratulated for their support and their work as unskilled labor. Snapshots of Community members working in Village Jamal Jamali Photos: Community members in the village worked very hard and with great interest though out the construction of shelters.
5 Situation of Women and Children in Jamal Jamali The construction of shelters, no doubt, is a revolutionary change in the lives of the inhabitants of village Jamal Jamli. This could be the first step towards a hygienic and educated village where adult men are aware of the rights of women and children. Currently the situation of women and children, in particular, in the village is not very encouraging. Education is not available to most of the children and the conditions in the village are also extremely unhygienic. It is customary in such societies to have children do basic chores of the house such as washing utensils, shepherding the cattle or cleaning the house, but the situation demands steps from humanitarian organization in the welfare of women and children. Snapshots of children in Village Jamal Jamali Photos Most children in the village usually walk barefooted all the time and no attention is given to personal hygiene.
