INVESTING IN AUSTRALIA With global uncertainty, Australia s economic conditions characterized by record-low interest rates, strong population growth, low levels of unemployment and 26 years of sustained growth have provided a popular environment for overseas investment. INVESTING IN CHINA Like much of Asia, China s population is undergoing a major social and economic change. For Australian businesses hoping to expand into China, complexity arises when navigating the unfamiliar. Below are some key factors to consider: Cross-cultural management: With an internal market of 1.3 billion potential customers, China continues to change rapidly. The country is now more than 50% urban, with million people moving to cities from the countryside each year. Unfamiliar tax structures: In 2016, China had the world s largest tax cuts due to a pilot program for value-added tax (VAT) to replace business tax across the board. This resulted in companies making total tax savings of 570 billion yuan ($82.63 billion). The program not only helped to reduce companies tax burdens, but also promoted industrial transformation and upgrading. Rapid growth: While GDP in the west has slowed, China continues to maintain an annual growth rate of 6.95%. Contributing to this growth are the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange which came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the 2017 Q1 global rankings in terms of funds raised. There were a total of 134 IPOs with a combined value of 70 billion yuan, the highest first quarter figures since In addition, 247 companies listed in the first 6 months of 2017, raising a total of billion yuan and signaling the strongest first half since Exports: China has become Australia s biggest trade partner and the demand for Australia s quality products is providing immense opportunities for Australian businesses.
