6 INDONESIA IN THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL Indonesia will continue to play a significant role as a moderating voice and bridge-builder among the members of the UN Security Council and in the broader UN system. Indonesia consistently puts emphasis on the promotion and protection of human rights as well as the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, including women and children. Therefore, Indonesia will continue to pursue the development of capacity building for mediation and post-conflict peacebuilding. Indonesia underscores the need for the UN Security Council reform to be more democratic, responsive, and credible. 12 Indonesia will continue to promote pacific settlement of disputes in line with Chapter VI and advancing the contribution of regional and sub-regional organizations in accordance with Chapter VIII of the UN Charter. Regional organizations are well-positioned to prevent and resolve conflicts, noting their understanding and knowledge of root causes of conflicts in their respective region. ASEAN is a case at point where South East Asia enjoys peace and development in the past 50 years and Indonesia has always been part of solution to regional problems

19 Adhering and advocating the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, as well as upholding territorial integrity, sovereign equality of all states and peaceful settlement of disputes are quintessential requirements to ensure effective and collective actions in sustaining peace. As a principal organ of the United Nations, the Security Council must be more responsive and able to deliver its mandates fully in a competent, efficient and accountable manner. Indonesia is a steadfast supporter of effective multilateralism and envisions the Security Council that strengthened rule for the ongoing Peace and Security pillar reform. Indonesia supports the work of the United Nations to be fit for purpose, adapt to new and emerging challenges and able to protect humanity and future generations. The United Nations should take a leading role in uniting the strength of Member States to maintain international peace and security as well as promote the economic and social advancement of all people.
