He has kept us in the land of the living, our eyes from tears, and our feet from falling. Many events happened around us and around the world this past year, but God protected us under his wings, and kept us as the apple of his eye. Many of us had to face situations where we did not know how we would face the next day, how we would encourage our family or friends, but God s grace was sufficient for us. With everything each one of us went through this year, God has showed us how much he cares for us. There s no way we can recount every blessing he has showered upon us. Let us be thankful for the daily bread he provides, for giving us the strength to go to work and school, for keeping us safe when we were driving and when we were at work and school, for forgiving us our sins, and delivering us from the evil one, for the shelter he has given us, and for meeting all our needs. This year will be remembered for the events that took place that shocked, and humbled the world. The historical Presidential election, the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series after 108 years, Britons voting to leave the European Union, the terror that Syrians face each day, the death of Fidel Castro were few among them. The increased persecution that Christians face in many parts of the world has only caused the church to grow. The persecution of Christians is unprecedented and our own country, India has jumped from 31 to 17 in rank in the world watch list in just 3 years. While we enjoy the freedom we have, we should have a burden in our hearts for those being persecuted and for those who was perishing in this world. We should be the light of this world by our living, our words and our compassion. 6 TOP CHRISTIAN NEWS FROM Terrorist Attacks in Brussels, Orlando, and Nice, Perpetrated by Islamic Extremists Although Donald Trump took a lot of media attention in 2016, terrorism was also a major news story. Particularly, three major terrorists attacks in the west rocked the world and showed that extreme Islamic terrorism is not contained in the Middle East. On March 22, a bombing attack was carried out in Brussels, Belgium. Thirty-two victims were killed in explosions at the Brussels airport and at a metro station. Another 230 were wounded. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. The perpetrators were found to be linked to the Paris attacks which were carried out in November of A few months later, in June, Islamic terrorism found its way onto American soil. In the early hours of June 12, shooter Omar Mateen opened fire on the patrons at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Police later revealed that Mateen had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Forty-nine people were killed in the attack, which included a hostage situation. Another 53 were wounded. This shooting was the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in U.S. history. A month after the Orlando shooting, and not yet a year after the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris, France was again the target of Islamic extremist violence. The perpetrator drove a truck at high speed into a crowd of people gathered in the city of Nice to celebrate Bastille Day. Eighty-six people were killed and 434 injured, many of whom were children. Although it is not clear whether the perpetrator was directly linked with ISIS or another terrorist group, after the attack, ISIS-affiliated accounts were noted celebrating it. On Monday, December 19, a terrorist in a truck drove through crowds at a Christmas market in central Berlin just after 8pm. ISIS has claimed one of its soldiers was responsible for the terror attack which killed 12 innocent victims and injured nearly 50 others. 2. Crisis in Aleppo The Syrian Civil War, which has resulted in the horrific humanitarian crisis that is Aleppo, has been called one of the worst humanitarian crisis of modern times. As Russian backed Syrian government forces under Bashar al-assad clash with rebel forces, hundreds of thousands of civilians have remained trapped with dwindling provisions inside the city. Countless ceasefires have been breached. Last week, word came that evacuations of the remaining civilians were finally beginning. Continued bombings destroyed communities and ripped families apart. Heart-wrenching photos and videos of young children pulled from the rubble surfaced on social media. Over 150,000 people reportedly have lost their lives in the conflict. Evacuations of civilians are ongoing. 3. ISIS Last Stronghold: Mosul The Islamic State was losing more and more ground as 2016 advanced. Mosul, Iraq is now their last major stronghold. ISIS took over control of Mosul in 2014 and destroyed many Christian villages and places of worship. Although many towns in Iraq and surrounding Mosul have been liberated from ISIS control, it is uncertain whether Christians will return to their homelands. Before ISIS took control of many areas of Iraq, there were 700,000 Christians in the country; now there are less than 250,000. Christian leaders from the Middle East have begged Christians either to stay or, if they have left, to return and not erase Iraq s ancient Christian roots. 4. Pakistan Easter Attack on Christians On Easter Sunday, a terrorist group associated with the Pakistani Taliban carried out a suicide attack against Christians who were celebrating Easter at a children s park in Lahore. Seventy-five people were killed, nearly half of whom were children. Although the majority of those killed were Christians, Muslims also lost their lives. 5. Coptic Church Bombing: Deadliest Attack on Egyptian Christians A bombing at a Coptic cathedral in Egypt has killed at least 25 people and wounded 49 others during Sunday mass. It s being called one of the deadliest attacks carried out against a religious minority in recent memory. As soon as the priest called us to prepare for prayer, the explosion happened, Emad Shoukry told the London Telegraph. Shoukry was inside the church when the bomb went off. 6. Christians Win Nepal s First Anti-Evangelism Case A court in Nepal has dropped a case against eight Christians, the first religious freedom dispute since the country s new constitution was implemented last year. The seven men and one woman had been charged with proselytizing after giving out a pamphlet about Jesus in a Christian school while helping children through the trauma following the 2015 earthquake. Anything perceived as evangelism is outlawed under the new constitution. Five are staff of the Christian teacher-training program Teach Nepal, while two others are school principals. They were arrested in June, and the pastor of Charikot Christian Church, Shakti Pakhrin, was detained a few days later. Nepali Christian leaders have welcomed their acquittal. 6 Calvary Indian Fellowship November/December, 2016 Be a Disciple, Make a Disciple

8 10 New Year s Resolutions Every Christian Should Make We would like to thank our pastor for his dedication and commitment to our church and to the members. We appreciate your effort and encouragment. Editor s Note I am thankful for our church, our Pastor, the leadership team, our youth, and every member, from the youngest to the oldest. God has blessed us this year and God willing, let us make 2017 another year to remember. Thank you Pastor and family for being part of Calvary Indian Fellowship and we have all been blessed because of it. I remember when we were at the play, we were supposed to get the conference room for worship. But the hotel staff did not keep their promise, and our leadership team immediately went out to find another location for us to worship. What could have been a Sunday without a worship service, they found another location and many members did not even know the initial dilemma. I didn t get a chance to thank them and I really appreciate all they do for our church. Thank you! Our youth has grown up and taken up a lot of responsibilities in a short period of time and that is commendable. God Bless You! As we are about to enter the New Year, let us hold fast to our faith, and may God Bless us in all our endeavors. In Christ, Abraham Mathew 1. Resolve to stay faithful to Jesus Christ. He is the one Truth, Way and Life. There s no reason to look elsewhere. 2. Resolve to not let anything a career, a significant other, social media, a house become an object of worship. 3. Resolve to watch your language and not speak any destructive talk, especially involving the name of God. 4. Resolve to prevent burnout by putting aside work one day a week. Trust God to provide for your needs that day and just enjoy the time He s given you. 5. Resolve to talk to your parents on a regular basis, and show them love and respect. 6. Resolve to be angry less. Channel any feelings of rage, which Jesus said are as severe as murder, into worshiping God and serving others. 7. Resolve to honor your commitment to your spouse. Whether in thought or in deed, stay pure and loyal in the union God made. 8. Resolve to not take anything that s not yours, including stuff you can hold and put in your pocket, and plenty that you can t, like music downloads, streaming movies and hours on your timecard. 9. Resolve to speak about others only with truth and love, not gossip. 10. Resolve to be content with what you have, and not worry about that others are amassing.
