Western Illinois Builders Association W.I.B.A. Punch List Board Members April 2018 President: Scott Howe Vice President: Tammy Lufkin Treasurer: Amy Schwartz Past President: Wayne Allen Directors: Greg Davis Steve Hawkinson Zack Thiel Neil Thomas Life Director: Bill Johnson Executive Director: Kaylee Johnson Inside this issue: President s Letter Highlights 2 Show Flyer 3 Show Advertising 4 Coloring Contest 5 Show Flyer 6 Show Registration 7 Website Features Social Media 8 Our speaker was Ken Springer, President, from the Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development. He talked about the trends, projects, and initiatives for 2018. The economy is up. Activity in the retail sector is booming especially on North Seminary St. and North Henderson St. Retail developers are being priced out of large markets and are seeking mid-markets which is our area. To expand their business and compete with online sales that are making business difficult, companies are building many smaller versions of their businesses in many different mid-market locations like Kohls coming to Galesburg with a 33,000 sq. ft instead of 52,000 sq. ft. location as usual. Logistics Park has roads and electricity. It needs rail service to the park. The BNSF Peoria subdivision line runs by it but there is not track with switching into the park. A master plan for track service is being developed collaboratively with BNSF. Transloading is removing product from the inside of a container, processing it, and then sending it via another means of transportation like a semitruck. Products like telephone poles, steel, or ag products could be processed at Logistics Park. While trans modal transportation is the process of unloading a container from one transportation to another like unloading a shipment container off a train and onto a semitruck. Most trans modal transportation runs through here and goes to Chicago. The plan is to subdivide Logistics Park into 20-acre plots for sale after rail service is established there. The CEO Initiative is a 90 minute a week entrepreneurial experience for high school students. It is a collaborative initiative with the Community Foundation. It will be launched here with 5 school districts in our area. There will be 15-20 students from each school. Students in the program will have the opportunity to tour businesses, job shadow, and even launch their own For-Profit Business. Talent Connect Knox County is a new program that helps get kids interested in job opportunities here in our area. There is a lot of great training programs at our local high schools and at Carl Sandburg College but there is a shortage of students enrolling into those programs. They will focus on careers growing in our area; health care, advance manufacturing, and transportation. The first event will be April 13 th and will focus on health care. Students are referred by guidance counselors. The program has business speakers, job shadowing experiences, marketing components, interactive events and will be held around the county in rotation at various types of businesses. Students will need to provide their own transportation and dress appropriately. Talent Connect Knox County will create internships to bring students in with interesting and engaging hands on experience.
