Renee Brigham IJCL Secretary State Convention Minutes 03/14/2014-03/15/2014 I. Executive Board Meeting! Officers were given laurel wreaths to wear throughout convention! Mr. Walker reminded everyone to smile and to enjoy themselves after a year of hard work.! Meeting was adjourned II. General Assembly I! Michael Keller, IJCL President called the meeting to order at 3:40 p.m.! Orion Meier, IJCL First Vice President, led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.! Sarah DeMars, IJCL Second Vice President, led the assembly in the JCL Creed.! All state officers led the assembly in the JCL Song.! Michael Keller introduced the 2013-2014 IJCL Officers.! Brittany Krowiarz, ISCL Vice President, introduced the 2013-2014 ISCL Officers.! Lisanne Pierson, State Co-chair, introduced the State Executive Board! Opening remarks were given by Michael Keller, who urged students to Carpe Diem and make the most of the convention.! Dr. Timothy Long of Indiana University Classics Department welcomed everyone back to campus after a year hiatus. Equating state convention preparation with March Madness, he reminded students to thank their teachers for all of their efforts. " Motion: A delegate from Crown Point made a motion to dispense with the reading of the General Assembly IV minutes from the 2013 State Convention. " Seconded: Homestead! Each school was invited to the stage for roll call, during which they could perform a brief skit informing the assembly of their number of delegates, sponsors, and chaperones. # Highlights included a spoof of the Fairly Odd Parents, What Do Romans Say, and the Herron delegation preparing to defeat the longdominating Crown Point delegation.! The recipient of the Denny Bartlow Packet Award was the Shelbyville delegation.

III.! Lisanne Pierson, State Co-chair, gave the convention orientation as a gentle reminder for those who were disinclined to read.! Jeremy Walker, academic contest chair, gave the academic orientation.! Thomas Cooper, IJCL Parliamentarian, gave the election orientation and reminded potential candidates of the regulations.! Wesley Wood, Certamen chair, gave the Certamen orientation.! Sarah DeMars, IJCL Second Vice President, announced the Indiana Latin Week results and gave fun prizes to the participants. # Cardinal Ritter received a scuba mask. # Crown Point received a sparkly baton. # Bedford North Lawrence received a paint by numbers kit.! Emily Kowalik, IJCL Historian, introduced Jeremy Walker and Sara Robertson to speak about the future Italy trip during other business. # Notable stops on the trip include Rome, Ostia, the Vatican, Naples, Pompeii, and Mount Vesuvius. # Teachers and students are highly encouraged to come as the trip will surely be an enjoyable bonding experience for all.! The creative arts participants were released to confirm their events.! Sierra Bass, IJCL Editor, read announcements, including the Bazaar event taking place that evening.! Thomas Cooper, IJCL Parliamentarian, read the proposed amendment to the Constitution. # The amendment would provide guidelines for selecting a new co-chair if a need arises before the designated voting year. " Motion: A delegate from St. Richard s made a motion to adjourn. " Seconded: Crown Point General Assembly II! Michael Keller, IJCL President, called the delegation to order.! Orion Meier, IJCL First Vice President, led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.! Sarah DeMars, IJCL Second Vice President, led the assembly in the JCL Creed.! All state officers led the assembly in the JCL Song. " Motion: A delegate from Crown Point made a motion to dispense with the reading of the General Assembly I minutes. " Seconded: St. Richard s! Wesley Wood, Certamen chair, requested that members of the tied Advanced teams meet him in a designated location for a sudden death round to determine who would compete in the finals.

IV.! Seniors were released to attend the SCL meeting.! Guest speaker, Professor Stofferahn of Indiana State University, discussed how the Middle Ages preserved the ancient literature of Greece and Rome that we read today.! Banquet workers were released to eat.! Jeremy Walker talked about this year s National Convention at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and encouraged interested students to register as soon as possible.! Due to time constraints, the awards that were scheduled to be presented during this time were moved to a later time.! Closing remarks were given by Anna Werkowski, a junior from Crown Point. # She shared the story of a tragic fire that destroyed her home. However, her book of Latin memories survived, and she urged students to make the most of their time and fill as many pages of their own memory books as they could. " Motion: A delegate from St. Richard s made a motion to adjourn. " Seconded: Boonville! Greg Voshell, Hospitality Chair, released schools for the Roman Banquet. General Assembly III! Michael Keller, IJCL President, called the assembly to order.! Emily Kowalik, IJCL Historian, led the delegation in the pledge.! Renee Brigham, IJCL Secretary, led the delegation in reciting the creed.! The IJCL officers led the delegation in the song.! Devin Robinson of Herron gave opening remarks. " Motion: A delegate from Homestead made a motion to dispense with the reading of the General Assembly II minutes. " Seconded: St. Richard s! Thomas Cooper, IJCL Parliamentarian, conducted Candidates Open Forum, and asked the potential officers important questions pertaining to their desired office.! The delegation was dismissed for chapter fellowship to discuss the candidates.! Brennen Chaussey, IJCL Webmaster, having been corrupted by the power of being the lone officer in General Assembly II, donned a Loki helmet and took over the assembly. He demanded the ballots back when suddenly Captain America (Renee Brigham) called her fellow Avengers (officers) to assemble and put him in his place. # Thor (Thomas Cooper) and Hawkeye (Sierra Bass) led the charge, and other officers assisted in tying up Loki for the remainder of the assembly. # Iron Man (Michael Keller) called for the election ballots to be brought to the stage, and the assembly was saved.

! Lisanne Pierson, state co-chair, announced the winners of the Sharon Gibson Community Service Award. # Crown Point received second place. # Bedford North Lawrence received first place for their work with teenage drivers.! Lisanne Pierson, state co-chair, recognized Bloomington North High School as the winner of the Effie Douglas Membership Award, which is annually given to the school who had gained the highest percentage of new members in the last year.! Sierra Bass, IJCL Editor, announced that Crown Point was the winner of the local newsletter contest.! Lisanne Pierson, state co-chair, announced the recipients of the distinguished service award. # Mr. and Mrs. Keller, parents of current IJCL President, Michael Keller, received the award for their assistance with Fall Latin Day and the last two state conventions.! Sarah DeMars read announcements. # The delegation sang Happy Birthday for one of the delegates. " Motion: A delegate from Carmel made a motion to adjourn. " Seconded: Shelbyville V. General Assembly IV! Michael Keller called the assembly to order at 4:30 p.m.! Renee Brigham, IJCL Secretary, led the delegation in the pledge.! Thomas Cooper, IJCL Parliamentarian, led the delegation in reciting the creed.! The IJCL officers led the delegation in the song.! Catherine Hart of Carmel provided opening remarks. # Catherine shared how the Carmel High School chapter had welcomed her and given her a wonderful group of friends when she moved to this new school in the past year. " Motion: A delegate from St. Richard s made a motion to dispense with the reading of the General Assembly III minutes. " Seconded: Boonville! Thomas Cooper, IJCL Parliamentarian, collected the ballots for the proposed amendment.! Pam Koleszar, Scholarship chair, gave the scholarship report and presented $500 scholarships to the two selected students. # Emily Kowalik received the Eileen Johnson award.

# Renee Brigham received the Elizabeth Love award.! Sarah DeMars, IJCL Second Vice President, announced that Crown Point was the winner of both the Helen Wampler Spirit Award and the Delegate Spirit Award.! Pam Koleszar and Steve Perkins, the North Central sponsor, performed a humorous skit that spoofed the popular show Duck Dynasty, with Mr. Perkins playing the role of Si Robertson.! Lisanne Pierson, state co-chair, announced the winners of the Dennis Bartlow Publicity Contest. # The top three schools (in ascending order) were Homestead, Bedford North Lawrence, and Crown Point.! Thomas Cooper, IJCL Parliamentarian, announced that the proposed amendment had passed.! Graphic Art awards were presented to winning students by the SCL.! While waiting for the remaining contests to be calculated, Michael Keller asked if there were any motions. " Motion: Mr. Walker made a motion for an officer dance party. " Seconded: Crown Point # Officers danced to What Does the Fox Say (some better than others)! Academic awards were presented to winning students by the SCL.! Creative Art awards were presented to winning students by the SCL.! As Michael Keller was about to introduce the next presenter, he noticed Mr. Walker raising his hand again. " Motion: Mr. Walker motioned for the entire state delegation to have a dance party. " Seconded: SCL # The delegation danced to part of Wake Me Up, which did indeed wake up sleepy delegates after the long stretch of award presentations.! Lisanne Pierson, state co-chair, announced that the co-chair for 2014-2019 will be Mr. Walker of Crown Point.! Rebecca Bush, Graphic Arts chair, presented individual graphic arts awards to: Alex Baloski, Sarah DeMars, David Kowalik, Emily Kowalik, and Anna Werkowski.! Greg Voshell, Costume Contest chair, presented individual creative arts awards to: Natalie Brigham, Renee Brigham, Emily Fender, Emily Kowalik, and Isabella Penola.! Jeremy Walker, Academic chair, presented individual academic achievement awards to: Emma Benson, Renee Brigham, Thomas Cooper, Claire Dosen, Emily Fender, and Ellis Yoder.

! Wesley Wood, Certamen chair, announced the winning Certamen teams. # Novice: Crown Point # Intermediate: Crown Point # Advanced: Crown Point! Tony Martin, ISCL advisor, installed Drew Herrmann as the 2014-2015 ISCL President.! Drew Herrmann, the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 ISCL President, introduced and installed the new ISCL officers.! The new IJCL officers were announced by the current IJCL officers in each position.! Michael Keller, IJCL President, installed Brennen Chaussey as the 2014-2015 IJCL President.! Brennen Chaussey, newly-elected IJCL President, installed the 2014-2015 IJCL officers.! Tony Martin, Sweepstakes chair, announced the final standings for the schools. # The Master s Study earned first place for small chapters. # Crown Point earned first place for large chapters.! The old and new officers led the delegation in the song.! The SCL recognized Lisanne Pierson and Jeremy Walker, state co-chairs, with gifts of appreciation for all of their hard work during this difficult year. " Motion: A delegate from Herron made a motion to adjourn. " Seconded: Homestead! Brennen Chaussey, newly-elected IJCL President, called the sixty-fifth state convention to a close.
