1 REGULAR MEETING MARCH 21, 2011 The Board of Trustees of the Kountze Independent School District met in regular session on Monday, March 21, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. in the Intermediate school library. Dean Haynes presided and Cody Williford gave the opening prayer. MEMBERS PRESENT Dean Haynes, Chuck Turner, Donna Moody, Steve Eppes, David Overstreet, Wayland Whisenhant, Cody Williford, Supt. Jon Ellis and Asst. Supt. Brad McEachern. AUDIENCE QUESTIONS AND/OR COMMENTS Jeramie Brown spoke to the board about an incident involving his son at the middle school. His son was involved in a fight and Mr. Brown asked that the board consider changing the wording on a first occurrence of an incident such as this. His son was given a $300 fine, 3 months probation and 30 hours of community service. Mr. Brown said that he knew that his son needed to be punished and he did not agree with him fighting. He felt that he should have been paddled or sent to ISS and not have the law called since this was the first time his son has ever been in trouble. Mr. Haynes told Mr. Brown that Mr. McEachern was aware of the situation and would look into it further and would get back in touch with him about his concerns. Mr. Brown thanked the board for letting him speak. CONSENT AGENDA Motion was made by Donna Moody, seconded by Steve Eppes to approve the consent agenda which included: Regular Meeting Minutes February 14, 2011 Special Meeting Minutes March 14, 2011 TASB Update #89 2 nd Reading Financial Statement AMEND ORDER CALLING ELECTION Susie Wilson discussed amending the order calling the upcoming school board election. On the original order, Kami Teel, was designated as the early voting clerk for the election on May 14, Due to the relationship between Kami Teel and board candidate, Ronnie Teel, she is unable to fill that position. Mary Lou Elmer will be the early voting clerk. Katrina Cook will serve as the election judge for the Intermediate School voting location and also as the early voting ballot board. Motion was made by Chuck Turner, seconded by Donna Moody to approve the amended order as presented. SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SHAC) UPDATE Supt. Ellis gave the board an update of the School Health Advisory Committee. Every school district is mandated to have this committee. Kristie Young, RN, is chairperson for the Kountze ISD SHAC. The committee meets throughout the school year and discusses recommendations to be made at the campus and district level. They also keep parents/students informed about health issues through newsletters and these meetings.

BILLS APPROVED FOR PAYMENT Motion was made by Donna Moody, seconded by Steve Eppes to approve bills for payment as presented by check numbers as follows: Local Maintenance # CENTRAL OFFICE REPORTS Mr. Ellis gave an update on the school board election. Drawing for places on the ballot will be conducted Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Central Office. Mr. Ellis explained to the audience that for the last several board meetings he has given the board members homework in the form of worksheets. He is helping them to build their knowledge. There were two questions on this worksheet on how the board works to serve to improve education for all KISD students and how they work with the superintendent to lead the district toward an adopted set of goals or vision. Susie Wilson discussed the Summer Leadership Insitute that will be held again this year in San Antonio June. She asked the board to let her know if they will be attending this year. Mr. Ellis also discussed the school finance article that he gave to the board. He said the article was from a local newspaper in Corsicana and that it quoted several area superintendents on the state budget cuts and how this will impact their respective districts. Mr. Ellis explained that at this time Kountze ISD is not making any personnel cuts. He said that is it very difficult to determine what is going to happen because there are several drafts in place that range from $0 cuts to over a $1 million in cuts. Board went into executive session at 7:30 p.m. as authorized by Section , et seq., Texas Government Code to accept resignations, employ personnel, consider renewal of professional contracts, and consider renewal of administrative contracts and for deliberations regarding the employment, evaluation, compensation and duties of administrative staff. Meeting opened at 8:15 p.m.
