1 UNITED AUTOMOBILE WORKERS - CITIZENSHIP DEPARTMENT ROY REUTHER FILES Papers, /2 Linear Feet Accession Number 191 On August 15, 1957 the Political Action Department was reorganized, and the name was changed to the Citizenship Department. Roy Reuther remained the director of this department. He was assisted by William Dudds and Edward Purdy. In December, 1962 the Citizenship Department, and the name was changed to the Citizenship-Legislative Department. For convenience of description, the Citizenship-Legislative files are in a separate collection. In 1960, Mr. Reuther took a leave of absence to become Dupty Director for the National Voter Registration Committee of the Democratic Party. In 1962, he took another leave of absence to become National Director for the Voter Registration Campaign of the AFL-CIO. These records are not in this collection; it only contains the records of the UAW Citizenship Department.

Most of these records consist of correspondence with staff members of the departments and to aid the researchers. There are secondary entries which indicate the names of the staff members. There is a large amount of correspondence with William Oliver and Paul Sifton. At the end of this series, there are three folders of drafts of resolutions for the 1959 Convention. Civil rights legislation and its enforcement is a topic which is particularly well documented. These records are in folders which are placed at the end of each region. The records concerning congressional elections in Michigan are found in Series VII. The records of Series IV are arranged numerically by number of region. The staff members are listed first and the other catagoriescitizenship councils, local unions and elections and correspondence with congressmen are listed next. To assist the researcher, the folder entries provide information about the geographical location of the regions. For space purposes, some of the states within a given region are abbreviated. Most of those states which are abbreviated are ones in which the UAW did not actively engage in election activity. Most of the records in this series relate to the role of the UAW in congressional elections within each region, and this topic is well documented. These records relate to election activity within the state of Michigan, including the city of Detroit. These records are divided into two sections. The records of Section I pertain to election campaigns. They are arranged chronologically, and secondary folder entries indicate particular elections. The records relate to various state and congressional elections, and correspondence with candidates about their campaigns is included. Since the records are arranged by date of election, some folders may contain records which are dated the year before or the year after the election. Some of the correspondence in folders labeled 1958 Elections, for example, is actually dated 1957, and a few of the records are dated prior to August 16. The records of Section II relate to campaign issues, and they are arranged alphabetically. There is a large amount of material on the Governor's election of 1960, on the Constitutional convention elections of , on voter registration in Wayne County, on election issues in Detroit, on industrial development, on proposals to reapportion the state legislative districts, and on taxation legislation.
