1 Bookmarking in LexisNexis Congressional Congressional Publications Advanced Search: To bookmark the Advanced Search page use: Searching within a specific field (using the pulldown menus) There are three pulldown menus, one after each box. In the URL syntax, they are select 1, select 2, and select 3. A URL to search all fields including full text after the 2 nd box would be: For the other menu options, use the word in CAPS listed below for the word ALL in the example above. The other menu options are: All fields except full text (this is the default) All fields including full text =ALL Congressional source Subject =SUBJECTS-ALL Title =TITLE-ALL Witness =WITNESS Witness affiliation Author (CRS and Serial Set only) =AUTHOR-GROUP Map Area/Subject (Serial Set maps only) Map relief method (Serial Set Maps only) Names on map (Serial Set Maps only) Illustration caption (Serial Set only) Non-Congressional source (Serial Set only) Petitioner (Serial Set only) =PETITIONER Table title (Serial Set only) =TABLE-TITLES =ALL-EXCEPT-FULL =COMMITTEE =WITNESS-AFFIL =SUBJECTS-GEO =RELIEF =NAMES-ON-MAP =IMAGE-CAPTION =AGENCY Please note, not all fields work for all documents types. For example, setting up an Author field search for reports will not work. So please check any combinations you set up. To bookmark specific document types, use the base URL and add the text below the document type. Committee Prints (all dates) =ComPrints&DateRestrictionControl=ALL Serial Set (default date set to Prior to 1970) =SerialSet Serial Set Maps (default date set to Prior to 1970) =SSMaps CRS Reports (all dates) =CRSReports&DateRestrictionControl=ALL Hearings (all dates) =Hearings&DateRestrictionControl=ALL House and Senate Documents (all dates) =HSDocs&DateRestrictionControl=ALL House and Senate Reports (all dates) =HSReports&DateRestrictionControl=ALL Legislative Histories (all dates) =LegisHist&DateRestrictionControl=ALL Example: Committee Prints omprints&daterestrictioncontrol=all
2 For multiple document types bookmarked, simply add srcboxes=documenttype& after the first ampersand. For example, for Hearings and Committee Prints use: ngs&srcboxes=comprints&daterestrictioncontrol=all Dates To change the DATES in the search, use the following text after the 2nd equals sign in the URL Before 1970: PRIOR70 Previous 5 years: 5:YR Since 1970: SINCE70 Previous 10 years: 10:YR Previous 2 years: 2:YR Previous 20 years: 20:YR Example: Committee Prints for the previous 5 years ints&daterestrictioncontrol=5:yr To change the dates to other than the default tabs, use the following base URL lset& Date is Between (note different formatting of the from and to dates): DateRestrictionControl=DATEBETWEEN&from_mo=Nov&from_yr=1945&to_mo=Dec&to_dy =31&to_yr=1960 Date is Before DateRestrictionControl=DATEBEFORE&to_dy=31&to_yr=1960 Date is After DateRestrictionControl=DATEAFTER&from_yr=1945 To combine a search for a specific title, with a full text search, in hearings, before Dec. 31, 1950, the URL would look like the following: ITLE- ALL&select2=ALL&srcboxes=Hearings&DateRestrictionControl=DATEBEFORE&to_mo =Dec&to_dy=31&to_yr=1950 Congress To restrict by a specific congress, s=91 However after the 99 th Congress, the congress number needs an exclamation mark after the number. For example: ongno&congress=100!
3 Serial Set Only options For institutions that have purchased the LexisNexis Serial Set Digital Collection, there are a number of options available to take advantage of the documents types there. To set up the search to search the American State Papers only, the following URL is used: SerialSet&ssoption=American State Papers&ssopen=Y To search one of the other document types, substitute the term noted below for the highlighted section of the URL above. All Document Types AnnualReports Court of Claims Reports Hearings House & Senate Documents House & Senate Journals House & Senate Reports Impeachment Materials Memorials & Petitions Presidential Messages Private Relief Actions Treaties Conventions =Selected&ssopen=Y =Annual Reports&ssopen=Y =Court Claims&ssopen=Y =Hearings AND NOT Documented&ssopen=Y =House Senate Documents &ssopen=y =House Senate Journals&ssopen=Y =House Senate Reports&ssopen=Y =Impeachment Materials&ssopen=Y =Memorials Petitions&ssopen=Y =Presidential Messages&ssopen=Y =Private Relief Actions&ssopen=Y =Treaties Conventions&ssopen=Y To set the default to limit to items with illustrations use SerialSet&ssoption=Selected&sslim=illustrations&ssopen=Y To limit to items with statistical tables use SerialSet&ssoption=Selected&sslim=tables&ssopen=Y Sample Search: To search for full text within the House and Senate Journals for the 40 th Congress, the URL would be: LL&srcboxes=SerialSet&ssoption=House Senate Journals&ssopen=Y&restrictby=congno&congress=40 Hint: if your URL doesn t work, create it one step at a time (first the field, then the document type, then the date/congress), and check your work at each step.
