1 NATIONAL PARLIAMENT OF PNG 9 th Committee Chairs Program October 2012 The Speaker of the National the Hon. Theo Zurenuoc, MP has invited the Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) to deliver a program of support to ary Committee Chairs and Deputy Chairs appointed to permanent and referral committees of the 9th. 2 Program Goal To contribute to the restoration of by increasing the capacity of parliamentary committees to fulfill their accountability and review responsibilities. Program Outcome By the end of the program participants will have an increased understanding of how effective committees work and how they can lead and motivate their committees to fulfill their responsibilities. Program Objectives 1. Participants develop a common understanding of: Why parliament has committees; How committees work (process and procedures); How effective committees impact and make the more effective; Roles and responsibilities of Committee Chairs, members and staff. 2. Chairs and Deputies Chairs of selected committees develop work plans for the period to December Delivery Strategy The Program will involve a full day workshop for all Committee Chairs and Deputy Chairs on Monday 22 October As part of a continuing program of support, committee chairs will then be invited to participate in a work planning session (1.5 hours) on: Tuesday 23 October 2012 ; or Wednesday 24 October 2012; and Thursday 25 October Page2
