2 Welcome to the Fourth Annual WA Migration and Mobilities Update Conference The critically important and challenging subject of Modern Slavery and Migration is the focus of this year s Update, an issue of increasing relevance in Australia to Government and key community interests. This fourth annual WA Migration and Mobilities Update provides a forum for debate and discussion about this issue. The programme, organised by the Migration, Mobilities and Belonging (MMoB) research group at UWA with the support of an expanded Steering Committee, reflects key stakeholder voices in this area. The key aim of this Update is to extend our understanding of the specific policy issues and experiences related to migration, modern slavery and forced labour, and to promote and strengthen links between the university, government, nongovernment and community sectors. We actively support rigorous dialogue and exchange about policy and service delivery, and link high-quality research to the debate. To achieve this aim, this year s program features two panels led by experts Professor Jennifer Burn and Associate Professor Marie Segrave, whose presentations will provide an update on the latest research on migration and modern slavery. They are supported by panels of the key voices within government, non government and community who are engaged in both policy and service delivery in this field. We are also pleased to offer an additional half day workshop to raise awareness about indicators of modern slavery. The annual Migration Update reflects the objectives of the UWA Migration, Mobilities and Belonging research group. Established in 2013, this network brings together staff and students from across The University of Western Australia with an interest in a diverse array of migration issues. The WA Migration and Mobilities Update Conference is modelled on the very successful series of events hosted by the University of Adelaide and the Dunstan Foundation, initiated in 2010 by the late Professor Graeme Hugo AO. Anti-Slavery Australia provides access to legal advice and representation for people who have experienced trafficking and slavery and advocates for changes to laws and policies to improve the protection of the rights of people who have been trafficked. Jennifer has had an active involvement in the development of Australia s response to human trafficking and slavery. She was a foundation member of the Australian Government, National Roundtable on Human Trafficking and Slavery and continues in that role and is a member of the advisory group for the Retail and Supplier Roundtable, Pledge Against Forced Labour. Marie Segrave Associate Professor Marie Segrave, of Monash University, is a Program Leader at The Border Crossing Observatory. She also works with the Gender and Family Violence Program and the Population, Migration and Social Inclusion program at Monash. She was awarded a prestigious Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher fellowship in 2014, and this research has focused on the intersection of regulation, exploitation and vulnerability in relation to unlawful migrant labour. Marie s work into human trafficking and unlawful migrant labour exploitation has focused primarily on the design, implementation and impact of policy and law. Marie s research has been published widely, and she has contributed to policy analysis nationally and internationally. arts.uwa.edu.au 5

7 Conference convenors Loretta Baldassar Donella Caspersz Farida Fozdar Loretta Baldassar is Professor in the Discipline Group of Anthropology and Sociology at The University of Western Australia and Adjunct Principal Research Fellow at Monash University. Loretta has published extensively on transnational migration and settlement issues. Her most recent books include: Chinese Migration to Europe (Palgrave, 2015); and Transnational Families, Migration and the Circulation of Care: (Routledge, 2014). Loretta is Vice President of the International Sociological Association Migration Research Committee and a regional editor for the journal Global Networks. She is currently Chief Investigator on two ARC research projects: Ageing and New Media, and Understanding the Effects of Transnational Mobility on Youth Transitions. Donella Caspersz is in the Management and Organisations discipline of the UWA Business School. In the area of migration studies Donella s research focuses on labour migration. Donella has contributed to publications, conference papers and supervised doctoral research students whose research focuses on matters related to labour migration. Donella s other research areas of employment relations and family business complements this interest in labour migration. Similarly, Donella has publications, conference papers and doctoral students researching matters related to these areas. Farida Fozdar is Associate Professor in Anthropology and Sociology at The University of Western Australia. Her research focuses on race relations and migrant settlement issues (including employment, housing, belonging and service delivery), racism, citizenship and nationalism, and issues to do with refugees and asylum seekers. She works closely with migrant settlement agencies and community organisations. She has published widely in academic outlets, as well as authoring reports to government and research consultancies. Her latest projects are two edited collections on mixed race, a monograph on Australian identity, and several papers on postnationalism. Supported by arts.uwa.edu.au 7
