4 What is War? A popular song from the 1960s asks, War what s it all about? then answers, Absolutely nothing! Sometimes that seems true. We can look back in history and say, Why did one caveman hit the other caveman on the head with a bat over who was going to get that cave... when there were lots of caves around? It must have seemed important at the time for the two cavemen to go to war over a cave. But in retrospect (looking back after a long time), it seems pretty silly, doesn t it? It has been said that War is a lack of imagination. This means that even smart people couldn t figure out how to get along, compromise, cooperate, or do any other creative thing to avoid war. Too bad, hey? It would be easy to say, Well, we should just never, ever have wars. That would be nice. But it s probably not very realistic. So maybe it s better to learn about war and see how we can at least avoid most wars much of the time. Actually, we re pretty good at this today, even though the current events on the evening news might not make you think so. Or, we could say, Well, at least when we have a war, let it be for a good reason, and then let s try to make it as short as possible. That s really what most (but not all) nations at war try to do today. Check the things that you believe war is. a conflict that is unavoidable a conflict that would have been avoidable if everyone had worked together a fight to the finish a battle of wills when people don t agree a fight to achieve a goal that one believes is worth achieving and can only be achieved by physical conflict Write your definition of war: Carole Marsh Gallopade International GET WAR: What Kids Should Know Page 6

5 Major Wars of the Past Just a few examples of the wars fought in the past and their death toll. More people were killed during the Civil War than during World Wars I and II. MAJOR U.S. WARS YEAR(S) U.S. DEATHS Revolutionary War ( ) 4,435 War of 1812 ( ) 2,260 Mexican War ( ) 13,283 Civil War ( ) 558,052 Spanish-American War (1898) 2,446 World War I ( ) 116,708 World War II ( ) 407,316 Korean War ( ) 33,741 Vietnam War ( ) 58,168 Persian Gulf War ( ) 293 War in Iraq (2003-????) 315 and counting Carole Marsh Gallopade International GET WAR: What Kids Should Know Page 7

6 Headline News WAR! Let s cut right to the headline news of today it s about war. Today, most of the war news is about the United States and Iraq. And, the ongoing war on terrorism. Oh yeah, and the leftover war in Afghanistan. And then there s Korea are we gonna go to war with them? There are bombings here and bombings there. There are wars going on that have been going on for so long in some countries that they don t even make headline news every day. And of course, there s still lots of talk about the terrorist attacks on America on September 11, War, war, war isn t there anything else going on in the world? Yes! In spite of all the constant talk about wars past, present, and future, most folks in the world are doing some or all of these things. Check the activities that apply to you and your family. Going to a birthday party, the movies, etc. Going to church, synagogue, mosque, etc. Going to school Shopping Doing homework Cooking and eating dinner Driving to visit relatives Playing sports Enjoying a picnic Going to work Playing outdoors Planning a vacation Doing chores Feeding the dog/cat In other words, even when the news is all about war war war, in most neighborhoods, in most towns, life goes on as usual. However, war comes close to home no matter where you live if any of these things happen: People say our city might be attacked Your Mom, Dad, relative or friend is called up to go to war You have to change your plans or way of doing things because of war Someone you know is killed in a war When war comes close to home you begin to care more about war.
