Warmed up, it s a short step from Irish culture to Ireland s social history as you journey after some of Ireland s most famous men and women on a tour like none other. Glasnevin Cemetery Prior to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery, Irish Catholics had no cemeteries of their own in which to bury their dead and, as the repressive Penal Laws of the eighteenth century placed heavy restrictions on the public performance of Catholic services, it had become normal practice for Catholics to conduct a limited version of their own funeral services in Protestant churchyards or graveyards. This situation continued until an incident at a funeral in 1823 provoked public outcry, prompting Daniel O'Connell to launch a campaign and push for a burial ground in which both Irish Catholics and Protestants could give their dead dignified burial. Glasnevin Cemetery was consecrated and opened on 21 February Originally covering nine acres of ground, the area of the cemetery has now grown to approximately 124 acres. From the ordinary to the truly extraordinary, including the likes of Michael Collins, Daniel O'Connell, Eamon de Valera, and The Dubliners' Luke Kelly... the people of Glasnevin Cemetery have shaped the Ireland of today. 5 Keeping to the theme, hop across to the famous Gravediggers Pub for lunch. John Kavanagh s, aka The Gravediggers It s no coincidence that a family running a business within a stone s throw of Glasnevin Cemetery would have an acute sense of Irish culture, and the good judgment to preserve it. Not a television or radio in the place, the characteristically Dublin penchant for storytelling and talking ráiméis the only humming backdrop noise. Known as "The Gravediggers" because of its proximity to Glasnevin cemetery, the current proprietor is Eugene Kavanagh and his family have owned the pub since The interior has changed little since the 19th century although Kavanagh s have had the front lounge renovated. The chef is very talented, and everything is extremely fresh. Truly an amazing find. The atmosphere awaking the senses transfers you to an era of multiple years ago. A savage pint of Guinness. After lunch and a quick stop off at the airport, depart for one of Ireland s most treasured World Heritage Sites - megalithic tombs older than the Pyramids of Egypt - prime examples of Ireland s deep rooted spiritual heritage. Megalithic Tombs The Megalithic Passage Tombs at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth were constructed over 5,000 years ago (about 3,200 B.C.), making them older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Newgrange was built during the Neolithic or New Stone Age by a farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne Valley and has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Megalithic Passage Tomb at Newgrange was built about 3200 BC. The kidney shaped mound covers an area of over one acre and is surrounded by 97 kerbstones, some of which are richly decorated with megalithic art. The 19 meter long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof. It is estimated that the construction of the Passage Tomb at Newgrange would have taken a work force of 300 at least 20 years. Newgrange was built as a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance. It is best known for the illumination of its passage and chamber by the winter solstice sun on the shortest days of the year, around December 21. Together Knowth, Dowth, and Newgrange form part of the Bru na Boinne visitor experience and access is on a limited availability basis. Return to the Hotel
