2 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS SUBORDINATE/DEPENDENT CLAUSES REVIEW: * FANBOYS are coordinating conjunctions and are sometimes called coordinators. They appear only in the middle of a sentence. NEW: A Subordinating Conjunction is a conjunction (a connecting word or phrase) that introduces a Subordinate (or Dependent) Clause, joining it to a main independent clause. * A Subordinating Conjunction (also called a dependent word or subordinator) comes at the start of a Subordinate (or D ependent) Clause. * (The subordinator subordinates, just as the Terminator terminates.) Meaning: It turns the clause into something that depends on the rest of the sentence for its meaning. FOR EXAMPLE: Combining 2 independent clauses. I am sick. I cannot go to the game. You will understand very well if somebody says to you: "Bill went swimming." A subordinating conjunction always comes at the beginning of a subordinate clause. It "introduces" a subordinate clause. The majority of conjunctions are "subordinating conjunctions."
