1 RESEARCH WORKSHOP: PEACE BUILDING IN FERGHANA VALLEY National, religious, ethnic, group and gender identities are being re-conceptualized as borders between the Central Asian societies are defined. Redefinition of collective identities and their relations with distribution of powers may create conflicts between different communities and ethnic groups. In Ferghana Valley, there have been several conflicts happened after the collapse of Soviet Union. These conflicts produced animosity and bloody clashes between ethnic groups and communities in the Valley. The last clash between ethnic communities was in June 2010 in the Southern. After the violent conflict, international organizations and NGOs, foreign countries as well as transitional government and local authorities have implemented several projects of peace-building in the region. Peace-building is as an engagement to identify and support structures which will tend to fortify and solidify peace in order to avoid a fall back into the conflict or (re)building institutions and infrastructure within a conflictual area to create conditions favorable to peace. Therefore, the workshop has two important inter-related topics: identity-based conflicts and peace-building. While there has relatively been stable condition and an increase in the numbers of peace building activities in the Valley, the change of local political structure, the fluidity of interethnic relationships, and post-conflict narrative of violence may again create a potential hotspot in the region. For that reason, this workshop aims to address the formation of the geographies of peace building and strategies intent to deal with the post-conflict issues.
