1 Italian EU Presidency conference on Transport safety: societal challenges, research solutions Palazzo Ducale, Genova, 4-5 December 2014 Draft Programme Day 1 4 December 2014 SESSION 1 This session should set the scene, present the objectives of the conference, introduce the themes to be discussed in depth in the afternoon. The keynote speech should focus on transport system safety as a societal challenge, and highlight the role of research and innovation, and of the deployment of R&I outcomes, in achieving the ambitious EU policy objectives. 2 13:00 14:30 Lunch SESSION 2 Each modal breakout sub-session should aim to identify the future research needs specific to it (including the relevant intermodal nodes), and explore the commonalities and the transferability of best practices across modes. This format is intended to maximise the active engagement of the participants in the discussions. Each parallel sub-session will be chaired by a top representative of the relevant European Technology Platform. It will be introduced by two short presentations, highlighting the users point of view and the Italian stakeholders perspective, followed by dedicated discussions on the specific priorities and the common dimensions, notably data management, human factors and automation. 4 Day 2 5 December 2014 SESSION 3 This session should bring together and discuss the outcomes of the breakout sessions, and deliver the conference immediate output, in the form of a conference statement summarizing in a few paragraphs the key conclusions, including the main directions of future R&I work to be carried out at EU level. The session will be opened by the summary reports of the 4 rapporteurs of the breakout sessions, followed by a round table and a general discussion. A final keynote speech should summarize the main conclusions and anticipate the identification of future priorities, whose broad lines will be set out in the conference statement to be read out and adopted by the participants before closing.
