1 Humanity Accomplished Rotary International President K.R. Ravindran District Governor Rudy Westervelt A message from your District Governor Congratulations on all of your accomplishments in the Rotary year! Congratulations to our Rotary Heroes! Each and every member in our district has had the opportunity to be a hero to someone in need. All your gifts of time, talent and resources have made a positive impact. It is graduation time and a time for fellowship. Celebrations with our families as we prepare for summer vacations and the transition from the current leadership to the new club leaders is happening. Clubs will be awarding thousands and thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors. If we pooled those funds, the numbers would be somewhere between $500,000 and $750,000 annually. Thank you for changing these young peoples lives. As you finish out your gifts to The Rotary Foundation this year, begin to think of the projects that you would like to support with those monies in three years. Over $1,000,000 given by you will change a lot of lives. Please finish the year strong and remember to make a donation to Polio Plus. Let this next year be the year when Rotarians finish the battle against this terrible disease. Why are we Rotarians? What does Service to Humanity or Service Above Self mean? What does it look like? When you have owned some area of focus or avenue of service or club position, you feel invested in it and responsible for it. When you truly embrace ownership and accountability and act on it, you can be very successful. One of our missions as Rotarians is to ensure that we keep our clubs vibrant, growing and inviting while serving our communities. In every corner of our district, we have citizens who would enjoy receiving the Gift of Rotary and the offer to be a member. We need to continue to offer choices of times, venues, prices, in person meetings, on line meetings, and more. 1
2 The great community and business leaders who are not yet Rotarians, need Rotary and Rotary needs them, because we have more people to educate, provide medical care to, find a solution for their problems, than we can possibly handle by ourselves. Ask yourself and all those around "Will we lock the Gift of Rotary in a safe place away from others?" or "Will we share the Gift that someone gave to us with another?" I thank each of you who shared the Gift of Rotary with another like-minded business or community leader. The Rotary Club of Joshua Tree shared that Gift this year. The Rotary Club of Joshua Tree CCC/Skilled Nursing Center was chartered and gave a tremendous gift to our new brothers and sisters in Rotary. Two more new clubs may yet be chartered this year. Thank you for doing the right thing and being open to new ideas. Letting a new club come in to existence and helping new Rotarians find their places and use their passions in service to others, gives even more purpose to each of us as Rotarians. New ideas, new gifts, new talents, additional time to Serve Humanity. The next person we bring into Rotary may have the ultimate cure for AIDS, for Ebola, for a new virus, for cancer, for illiteracy, for water contamination, for homelessness! No new club or satellite club will affect any existing club, if that club is inviting, involved and filling all the needs of its members because their friends are there, that is their family and the internal need to serve others is met. Your club was a new club at one time, and someone cared enough to share the Gift of Rotary with you. Each of our current 61 clubs is unique, different and perfect in its own way. Each has a unique set of needs and serves a special need in its community. Focus on the future, not the rear view mirror. There is room for #62, 63, 64, and more, because each will be unique and serve a sector of society that is yet un- or underserved today. Rotarians continue to embrace change. The life you change will not only be those put into service or being served, it will be your own. Karyn and I want to thank you for changing our lives. Thank you for Making the Impossible Possible for the Rotary year and beyond. Rudy and Karyn 2

13 The Human Toll of Polio Eradication By Pat Killoran, Zone 24 West End Polio Now Coordinator The iconic polio story, a story told often and told well, makes a deserving headline. Rotary and its partners have achieved success beyond measure success that should be shared far and wide, in every language and throughout the world. We can be proud of the results: only 76 wild polio cases in the world last year. We can be proud of the mobilization as the WHO leads an eradication effort that blankets the globe. We can be proud of the fundraising as all the partners including Rotary and Rotarians, WHO, governments, Bill Gates and others consistently meet the financial needs of the Polio Campaign. BUT, as the world celebrates, we must not forget that the price for polio eradication is more than money. The headlines on January 13, 2016, read Suicide attack in southwest Pakistan kills 15, mostly policemen. This hints at the rest of the story. So let us remind ourselves of the human cost to polio eradication. The January 13 murders, like so many terrorist attacks and tragedies in our world, were on the front page of the newspapers one day and gone the next in favor of another story. It s easy to tell ourselves that the attacks happened somewhere else, somewhere over there, allowing us to gloss over this tragic cost allowing us to numb ourselves to the result. We must remind ourselves: No matter how noble the cause, the loss of even one life matters. And this was not a unique event: There were similar headlines on December 29, 2015, one life in Afghanistan; March 11, 2014, 11 lives in Pakistan; March 17, 2014, two more; February 2014, four lives in Pakistan; February 2013, nine lives in Nigeria ; and there have been many more. In Pakistan alone there have been almost 100 murders associated with the polio campaign. In addition to the killings, polio workers and their families are targeted with death threats, harassment and blackmail causing disruption to families. See link news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/03/ poliopakistan-islamic-state-refugees-vaccination-health/ It s critical to remember the commitment and sacrifice made by the people of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria to help the world finish the eradication effort. I am not sure how we value their contribution. What s a human life worth? What are 100 human lives worth? Clearly, the costs have not only been money but also human life and suffering. So, if I debate with myself about a donation to PolioPlus if I wonder if my donation should be $10 or $100 or $10,000 then I should also wonder about the deaths of over 100 Afghans, Nigerians and Pakistanis. I should also wonder how their commitment to polio has affected their lives, their families and their communities. I should wonder how my financial gift will honor their sacrifice. There is no doubt that we must stay focused on the goal of a polio free world, Rotary s number one priority. We must stay committed to the children of the world. At the same time, we need to remember and be thankful for those, past, present and future, who have sacrificed their lives, rights and freedom for a polio-free world. They truly are a gift to the world and we must never forget! Larry Asmus 13
14 POLIO PLUS APPEAL FROM INDIA Hi Larry, Thanks for the e mail. I just returned from my annual trip to India for Polio NID. You would not believe the pride people in India have in the fact that they have eliminated Polio from the country. But we are not quite there, where we can say, we have eliminated Polio from this earth. We still have some work to do. We know the number of polio cases have come down a lot (10 cases so far compared to 22 cases last year at the same time) but we need to bring that number to 0 and keep it there for at least 3 years past that. For all this we need financial resources. I am urging your district to consider giving at least 20 % of the DDF for polio. The attached report will show you that even after donating that, you will have substantial DDF left over to do projects. Beside the Recognition that the district will receive from RI President, your donation of $33,300 DDF will end up as $149,850 for Polio with the Global Funds and Gates Foundation match. At $0.60 per child, think of how many children will receive their polio drops. I hope your district will consider this appeal. With kind regards, Anil Anil K. Garg, CFP, MBA, CSPG Zone 26 Regional End Polio Now Coordinator DRFCC Dist. 5240, ARRFC Zone 26, District Governor RI District Galt St., Suite 103 Simi Valley, CA 93065, USA Tel: (W) ; (Fax) E Mail: anil.garg@lpl.com Please donate your unused District Designated Funds (DDF) to Polio Plus. We really are "this close" to eliminating Polio Myelitis from our World. Also ask all your club members to individually make a donation to Polio Plus. Please donate at least 20% ( more is better) of your unused DDF to Polio Plus to permanently end the scourge of Polio. Larry Asmus 14
